4 LETS DRESS OUR BEST TO GIVE THE LORD OUR SUNDAY S BEST! September 16, th Sunday in Ordinary Time We know the signs of defeat: slumped shoulders, downcast eyes, a chastened demeanor. For those of us sincerely trying to follow Jesus, defeat is inevitable. We commit to spending more time with our kids, but that one project still looms. We resolve to be a good person, but our selfishness strikes again. It can be easy to get discouraged over our moral failures. Today's Gospel is a small, intriguing look at this process in the life of St. Peter. First, Jesus' questions get the Apostles thinking about his true identity. This results in a confession of faith from Peter: "You are the Christ." Eager faith characterizes Peter's relationship with Jesus. First to follow, first to leap out of the boat, and, we know, first to deny. It's the latter tendency that manifests itself later in the Gospel. When Jesus predicts the Passion, "Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him." Jesus' rebuke in turn is stinging. While Peter's caution to Jesus is in private, Jesus intentionally turns back to the others as he declares, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Like Peter, we rarely get it right all the time. Peter understood that Jesus was the Messiah, but he had a false concept of what that Messiah would accomplish. Jesus wants to make sure the rest of the disciples don't follow down the wrong road. The Christian life is a difficult one, as Jesus later tells the crowds. "'Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself.'" Yet the mercy of God is abundant. If we renew our trust and our efforts after a fall, every defeat is transformed into redemptive grace. "Whoever loses his life for my sake? will save it." 5 Goal: $58,850 Pledge: $61,618 Received: $45,531 RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is the process by which an adult, 18 years or older, is brought into the Catholic faith and is received into the Church by Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation. The program also welcomes adults who were baptized but did not complete their Sacraments of Initiation of First Communion and/or Confirmation. If you or anyone you know is interested in this program please note that Registration will be held Wednesday, September 12th and Thursday, September 13th, 2018 at 7pm in the Rectory basement located at st Street, Ozone Park, NY The sessions will begin Tuesday October 2, If you would like to find out more about this program, please contact: Deacon Ed at the rectory (718) ext. 12 Late Registration for the Religious Education school year! Adult Choir rehearses every Thursday from 7:00-8:30pm in the music office and sings every Sunday at the 11:30am mass. Please join us if you've ever considered singing at services. No formal music experience is required. 2. Children's Choir rehearses every Thursday from 3:15-4:30pm in the music office and sings every Saturday at the 5:30pm mass. This is a great opportunity for children to get involved in the liturgy, and we have fun and play games too! Snack is provided. 3. Eric will be offering a CONGREGATION SING- ALONG SESSION on Sunday, September 23 at 1:00pm (location TBD), right after the 11:30am mass. He will be introducing new music for the Fall to allow parish members to get familiarized with the new repertoire. All are welcome. 4. SAVE THE DATE for Sunday, October 14 at 1:00pm. Cantors Sheadan and Rosalia will be offering a recital along with Music Director Eric of Broadway's Greatest Hits in the church basement. Light refreshments will follow. The recital free but a good-will offering will be taken. 5. Parish-wide Christmas Concert is tentatively planned for Friday Dec. 14th at 7:00pm in the church. Mark your calendars!
