1 SynNor Brevet Published monthly by Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge #1-008 WEB SITE: District 1 Family Lodge of the Year 2006, 2008 July-August 2013 Number 13:7 Successful New Land, New Life Exhibit Closes in St. Paul - Will Continue Statewide! Living up to our Mission By Lowell Johnson Successful organizations are often identified as those that understand and hold true to their mission. In other words, they know why they exist and what they are there to do. Our recent New Land, New Life Exhibit has demonstrated that we are a successful organization. (If you don t know the Mission of Sons of Norway, see the back page of this newsletter - I think you will agree that through this project we have truly lived up to our Mission.) Some key members had a vision. Then planning began to define the project. A committee was formed and areas of assignment were given. Research was undertaken, writing was begun, artwork and graphic design developed, video production learned, interviews taped, artifacts gathered, and demonstrations and performances planned. Publicity and media outreach was conducted. And suddenly it was time to open at Landmark would the people come? Would they learn? Would they smile, laugh and cry? yes. The Gala Opening brought pageantry, formality and fellowship. Special guests from the community, leadership from Sons of Norway headquarters and our own Lodge officers attended. As the exhibit extended week by week, from Spring to Summer, our visitors were treated to cultural demonstrations, crafts, music, dancing, children s activities, and language lessons. All to share our heritage and history with others. Now, although closed in St. Paul and moved to Alexandria, the exhibit will travel to other parts of our great State so that others may enjoy it again, and again. The results? We know that our Lodge has a number of new members as a result of their seeing the exhibit. We also know that we had significant public exposure to people in the community that had never been aware of our organization. What we may never know is what it has meant to the people that visited it, or to those of us that contributed to it. I believe that we have touched the hearts of many. To think that a child may have quietly imagined a great-grandparent on a ship en route to America! To think that an elderly woman may have heard the voice of her mother while looking through the glass at a sewing machine or other kitchen artifact. For a man to remember the strength and sweat of his father s labor as he built a life in Minnesota for the family he loved. This is the power and wonder that was created by this Lodge in this work. I enjoy thinking that our Norwegian ancestors have been looking down on us - smiling at the thought of being remembered. Beaming with pride to know that we, still today, value their efforts and their accomplishments. My mother passed away last year - she was an intensely proud Norwegian. I think, no - I know - she is proud of me for having been a part of this project. Perhaps more importantly - for being a part of this Lodge. Congratulations Synnove-Nordkap! Mission Accomplished. There are so many people to thank and congratulate. Rather than attempt to do it here, and risk missing someone by name, it is best to simply say well done to all involved. See Page 7 for a message from President Kathy Stevens and a listing of sites that will host the Traveling Exhibit of New Land, New Life

2 Scandinavian Culture and News by Judy Stanke Need an Escape from the Summer Heat? Try The Norwegian Riviera; Minnesota s Own North Shore Lutefisk Hotel.com Norwegian Riviera The North Shore of Lake Superior, aka The Norwegian Riviera, is a 3 to 5 hour drive north of the Twin Cities. A distinct cooling effect can usually be noticed as you approach Duluth on 35W and suddenly Lake Superior comes into view with vistas of the bridge to Wisconsin and the harbor below. There is much to see and do in Duluth, but the real Norwegian Riviera is a little further. The drive along Duluth s London Road passes Glensheen Mansion and other beautiful large lake homes. Continuing on, the scenic route travels alongside the shore to Two Harbors, then becomes more winding as it rejoins Highway 61 and passes through Tofte, Lutsen and on to Grand Marais. Numerous lodging choices, ranging from ma and pa cabins to resorts and hotels are available both along the lake and inland. Stop for a bite to eat along the way...maybe a piece of blueberry pie or some locally caught fish. Throughout the summer there are art fairs, music festivals and community events such as the Grand Marais Fishermen s Picnic. Grand Marais is home to the North House Folk School and the Art Colony where one can take a class or stop in to see what others are creating. This area along Lake Superior s shore was (and still is) inhabited by many of Norwegian descent, as perhaps it reminded the early settlers in the area of their native Norway. Lake Superior provides a fascinating, ever-changing sea scape and the natural air conditioning provides heat relief in true Norwegian style. An article in the 6/23/13 Cook County News Herald brought attention to a fish cake fundrasier, Uffda! Fishcakes for Funds, which was to be held on June 24 at the Grand Marais Community Center. Proceeds were for the work of two Norwegian photojournalists, Kristian Kalsrod and Anton Ligaarden, to document Norwegian Americans lives along the North Shore of Lake Superior and Isle Royale. They will produce a web-based interactive product. The dinner was to feature a 150-year old fishcake recipe of the Tofte family, which originated in Tofte, Norway. A sneak peak of the documentary, stories of Isle Royale and the North Shore s fishing industry were to be shared. This effort is important in telling the lives of Norwegian immigrants along the North Shore in Minnesota. Since there is no longer a living community on Isle Royale, it is especially important to capture the stories of those who lived there before more time passes and they become lost memories. The Commercial Fishing Museum in Tofte, Minnesota is open to the public to share the history of fishing in the North Shore area. The documentary project of Kristian Kalsrod and Anton Ligaarden, can be viewed at: To hear a WTIP North Shore Community Radio 11/28/11 broadcast of Walter Sve, a third generation Norwegian fisherman, remembering the fishing life, go to: Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge normally meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at At Gustavus Adolphus Church 1669 Arcade Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota For information, contact one of our officers. 3 Lodge News Fra Presidenten The Synnove Nordkap picnic this year was spectacular. The food, of course, was wonderful and the weather even cooperated. The entertainment was fantastic. I had a front row seat and I couldn't figure out how he did those amazing tricks. He really is a great magician. I hope you're all as excited about our new home at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church as your board is. Our things are all moved into the new closet at G.A. and we're planning some special refreshments for our first meeting on September 10. Have a great summer. Kathy June Mid-Sommer Picnic Sunshine News Best wishes to Sharon Kalmes as she recovers from knee replacement surgery. The members of Synnove-Nordkap Sons of Norway Lodge extend their sympathy to Helen McEvoy-Freeze on the death of her husband, John. Helen is the business manager at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. She was instrumental in coordinating our move from First Lutheran to G.A. Keep her and her family in your prayers. HELP US KEEP TRACK OF OUR MEMBERS! Mary Beth Mutchler is our sunshine person. If you know of someone who is sick, had surgery, etc., please call her at or her at mbe43@q.com and she will send a card from the lodge. Also, if your phone, , or address change, please let us know or dmutchler@q.com. - Thanks! SynNorBrevet, Synnove-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 3

4 Lodge News Board Meeting Minutes, June 4, 2013 Attendees: Kathy Stevens, Ron and Susan Stow, Laura Sherman, Pat Carlson, Sharon Kalmes, Sharon Amann, Mary Beth and Dave Mutchler. We discussed preparation for the Mid-Sommer picnic. Mutchlers have the sound system and Stows have the May pole, flags and banner. Pat still has hot dogs and cups from the Festival. Jerry and Trudi will do the grill. Sharon will get brats and buns and bring her coffee pot. Dave will bring coffee and water and kubb. The magician is all set. The closet at First Lutheran was cleaned out on May 31 by Ron and Susan, Kathy Kaluza, and Chuck and Jean Draheim. The cleanout went as planned, but when they arrived at Gustavus (after being told to wait until that day), not only was the closet not ready for us, there were more things in it! With the help of a janitor, the items were removed and the closet given a quick cleaning before putting our items in it. We will need more plastic tubs, as this closet has no individual ceiling, so is rather dusty. Laura will send our first monthly payment in to Gustavus on August 25, in plenty of time for the September 1 due date. We discussed the lodge phone line, which costs us about $40 per month and is very seldom used. We decided to discontinue it completely after discussing the cheapest alternative, which appears to be Consumer Cellular for about $17+ per month. This is still more than we want to spend, as the phone line is used so seldom. We again discussed the September meeting, which we wish to be a nice kick-off for the new year at a new meeting place. We could have Paul Wilson and his wife from Skålmusik, but we may not need them as the trip is on so there will be slides, and we have decided to invite the church members to attend and to have krumkake, kransekake, open face sandwiches, lefse, rice pudding, and the works with bunads, etc. There will be more in the Brevet about this. Bob Lysak of the Northern Lights confirmed for our October program. Sharon Amann also confirmed with Cindy Olson that she can come to our October meeting for Foundation Month. Sharon Amann has been working with Helen McEvoy-Freese at GA about the reservations for the kitchen and the room for the Torsk and Meatball dinner in October. The next day she learned that we have the room and kitchen for Saturday, October 26, and on Friday, October 25 from 9:00 AM to noon. We determined the fund from which Laura should withdraw $2500 for our donation to Norway House. We discussed the young people s group, which now has a name: Middel-Lag. Since then I learned that means the lodge in the middle. Junior Lodge / Middel-Lag / Senior Lodge. The complete title will be Middel-Lag: Nordic by Nature. We discussed the need for a postmortem for the Festival of Nations fundraiser to see how to get more volunteers in order to make shifts shorter (we have extra tickets, just too few volunteers) and to review the pricing of our items. Pat Carlson will call the meeting, with Kathy and Susan to be among the attendees. Submitted by: Dave Mutchler, Secretary The next board of directors meeting will be held at on Tuesday, August 6 at the Maplewood Library, 3025 Southlawn Dr. (W. side of Maplewood Mall) in the community program room. Mid-Sommer Picnic Minutes June 18, lodge members and guests attended our annual picnic on a beautiful day at Island Lake Park in Shoreview. We enjoyed games, brats and hot dogs, and lots of pot-luck goodies. The magician and his assistant, Robert and Lynn Halbrook, were a big hit, especially with the kids. There was music and dancing around the May Pole at the end of the evening. Everyone seemed to have a good time, with the weather cooperating this year! We thank all the people who helped make this event a success, especially Ron and Susan Stow, Sharon Amann, and our grill chef, Jerry Richards. Mange takk! 6 This-n-That News, Notes and Nuggets You Don t Want to Miss! Restoring the Steinmeyer Organ in Nidaros By Robert Fossum, Chetek, WI Having just celebrated another 17. Mai we are reminded that next year, 2014, will be the 200 th anniversary of the signing of the Norwegian Constitution. The members of the National Assembly in 1814 decided that the Cathedral in Trondheim would be the site for royal coronations. This decision led to a major restoration and reconstruction of the cathedral. The reconstructed west nave with the beautiful Rose Window was celebrated during the 900 th Anniversary of Olavsdag in Included in the celebration were the St. Olaf Choir, representatives of Bygdelagenes Fellesrad, and officers from Tronderlag of America. The Norwegian-American community gave a 2.6 meter high silver crucifix to the Cathedral on that occasion. This crucifix stands atop the Alter of the Holy Cross in the east end of the nave. In addition. The cathedral welcomed a new main organ built to commemorate St. Olav s death. This organ was financed primarily by private donors, one of whom was Elias A. Cappelen Smith. Cappelen Smith, a native of Trondheim, was a metallurgist in Chicago. One of his inventions was the Peirce-Smith process which reduced the cost of copper converting by a quarter. The Steinmeyer organ built in Nidarosdomen was the largest pipe organ at the time. It had about 9,600 pipes, divided into 7 departments with a total of 127 stops. After WWII the organ was divided, in part because it had not been installed in a permanent place. Pieces of the organ were stored in a part of the cathedral complex that was destroyed by fire in the 1980 s. In 2007 the Kirkelig Fellesrad i Trondheim decided to restore this wonderful organ to its original grand form. This is being financed primarily from public funds. As part of the tour to Norway in May 2014, we have been invited to the Festgudstjeneste I Nidarosdomen on 20 Mai 2014, during which restored Steinmeyer organ will be consecrated. We invite you to join us on this tour to Norway in May As a gesture of friendship and in the same spirit as Capellen Smith and those who donated the Silver Crucifix in 1930, Tronderlag of America is planning to make a gift to the Church Council of Trondheim to assist in paying for the restoration of the Steinmeyer Organ. We are asking for donations to help pay for this restoration. Donations, payable to Tronderlag of America, may be sent to Tronderlag of America (a 501 c3 not for profit organization) with a notation that it is for the Organ Restoration. They should be addressed to: Jon Satrum, 5420 Brookbank Drive, Downers Grove, IL treasurer@tronderlag.org For more information about the tour, visit or contact Jon. Please note that you can donate to the fund whether you are planning to attend the tour or not. We look forward to making a significant contribution to the restoration of the great Steinmeyer organ at Nidarosdomen in Trondheim. Why Should You Attend the Stevne? 1. Access to the largest collection of Trondelag-related genealogy research materials in the U.S. 2. Knowledgeable people to help you research. 3. Opportunity to share and learn new information about your Trondelag & Norwegian heritage. 4. Interesting speakers and tours, good food, fun entertainment, great break room. 5. Vendors selling related products not readily available in other venues. 6. Opportunity to listen to and sing along with traditional Norwegian music. 7. A yearly occasion when you may discuss genealogy to your heart s content without watching eyes roll, feet shuffle and a mass migration to the door. 8. Being with a large group of people with similar interests can be a rewarding experience. 9. You ll meet some nice people. And you might discover they are cousins! 10. It s a great time of the year to take a short vacation, see some new sights and let someone else cook your meals and make your bed. SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 6

Thank you to the members who shared their time and talents for all of the demonstrations. This exhibit has been very well received by the community and we've gotten a lot of good publicity for our lodge. Our membership has grown because of it. These are all things we have to be thankful for. Susan Stow and the Junior Lodge Dancers again did a wonderful job. A special thanks to Ron Stow who was there for every Saturday event. We owe much to Mollie Spillman of the Ramsey County Historical Society for all of the work and guidance she gave us to make this exhibit so successful. 8 Benefit News Life Insurance is for the People Who Live It broke my heart to hear my daughter Dorsey say she wished her daddy was still here. But thanks to his foresight, we ll still have the things he worked for. Dorsey Hoskins father Bryan felt a tingling in his arm. The diagnosis an inoperable brain tumor. He died six months later, at 33, leaving his wife Dean alone to raise Dorsey and her sister Hattie. Fortunately, Bryan bought life insurance when he got married, and again when his daughters were born. Dean invested the proceeds in her own clothing store, which gives her the flexibility to spend more time with her children. Are you prepared? Without life insurance, your financial plan may be just a savings and investment program that dies when you do. 9 Corner Library By Trudi Johnson-Richards Minnesota 150 The People, Places and Things that Shaped our State by Kate Roberts originated from an exhibit, Minnesota 150 which opened in Soliciting nominations for hundreds and hundreds of topics, great and small, famous and obscure ranging in length from a few words to multiple page essays, was the easy part. Narrowing them down to final 150 topics was a challenge. First, the exhibit team selected topics to roughly 400 that met a predetermined criteria. Above all else, each successful nominator needed to convince the exhibit team that the chosen topic promoted change. Change was defined as follows: Change occurs when something or someone is fundamentally different as a result of experiencing an event; being influenced or affected by a person s actions; and/or using or interacting with a place or thing. The exhibit team circulated a group of 400 nominations to a range of educators, historians and others for evaluation. Each member of the group read through the nominations and provided comments which were combined and tallied. With this input, the exhibit team met with outside advisors (Director of the Minnesota History Center Museum, a professor of history and an independent historian) to make the final choices. The Minnesota Historical Society Press published this book in Of particular interest are Norweigian and Scandinavian names and places: Elmer L. Anderson, Minnesota s Governor , page 5; Norman Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize 1970, page 17; F. Melius Christiansen, Director of St. Olaf Lutheran Choir for many years, page 26; Kensington Runestone, located in Alexandria, Minnesota, Runestone Museum, page 98-99; Lutheranism, page 106; Vilelm Moberg and Ole E. Olson, elected Governor of Minnesota in 1930 who made the Farmer-Labor Party the most successful third party in America s history, page 133. Kate Roberts reveals in many ways in which our past becomes our collective history. Some choice topics seem obvious; others may surprise you. This book is a glimpse into what was on the minds of Minnesota history-minded people in the years leading up to the state s sesquicentennial. Kate Roberts holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota and is a senior exhibits developer for the Minnesota Historical Society. I recommend reading Minnesota 150.
