1 SynNor Brevet Published monthly by Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge #1-008 WEB SITE: District 1 Family Lodge of the Year 2006, 2008 December 2013 Number 13:11 It s Julebord! Our annual celebration will be held Dec. 10 th at 6:00 p.m. A beautiful holiday feast including all of our Scandinavian favorites such as: liver pate and crackers, potato sausage, meatballs, herring, salmon, shrimp, cheese, breads, Rødkal (red cabbage), Surkål (sweet/sour cabbage), beet pickles. rutabagas/carrots, sweet/sour cucumbers, red potatoes w/dill, fruit, Risengrøt (rice pudding), Rømmegrøt, dessert waffles and jam, Søtsuppe (Fruit soup), cookies, Krumkake, Sandbakkels, Rosettes, Spritz, and lefse! A little bit about Julebord: Christmas in Norway has retained its pre-christian name, Jul. The main event is on Christmas Eve, the evening when the main Christmas meal is served and gifts are exchanged. There are several different traditions of main dishes served on Christmas Eve, around Norway. In Western Norway (Vestlandet), mutton ribs (Pinnekjøtt, lit. "woodstick meat") is a common dish. Near the town of Voss, mutton head (Smalahove) is eaten. Lutefisk is another common dish. In Northern Norway, boiled cod is more common. In Eastern Norway, pork ribs (Svineribbe) is the most common dish. With all these dishes, boiled potatoes are served. To some, Christmas Eve dinner begins with rice porridge (rommergrot) which contains one almond that wins a prize. A bowl is traditionally put out for the unpredictable Nissen so that he will continue to watch over the animals and not turn mischievous. Almost all Norwegian breweries produce traditional Christmas beer (juleøl), which is darker, stronger and has more flavor than the common Norwegian lagers. Breweries also produce a special Christmas soda (julebrus), which in some parts of the country is a red raspberry soda, with a Christmas label on the bottle. Akvavit is also common. Christmas dishes are also served on julebord, people from work gather in a restaurant around early December to eat Christmas food and drink. Also, a large variety of cakes or cookies (julekaker) are common. Traditionally, the mother of the house is expected to bake 7 types of julekaker. 2 Scandinavian Culture and News by Judy Stanke Editor s note: This is Judy s last issue editing this page. We thank her for the interesting articles that she has written over the past two years. We are looking for someone to help us with this page. Can you help? The new Norwegian Christmas postage stamps have been released and are now available to purchase from Norway Post. According to their website, the new stamps feature cartoon characters conceived by Kjell Aukrust, which were featured in books first popular during the time period. One stamp depicts the character Solan Gundersen, a magpie with an outgoing personality, on skis. He was portrayed in Aukrust s stories, along with Ludvig, a hedgehog with a pessimistic personality. The two have been historically in competition with each other, which is reflected in the appearance of Solan on the 2013 stamp finally coming 25 years after Ludvig was featured on a 1988 Christmas stamp! A second Christmas stamp shows a glimpse of another Aukrust character, Nabonissen, the grumpy neighbor. Ill-tempered and irritable, he is depicted sticking his head out of the window of his house in below zero weather. Date of issue: 11. November 2013 A Domestic: Solan Gundersen A Domestic: The grumpy neighbour Design: Magnus Rakeng Illustrations: Kjell Aukrust, AukruststiftelsenMethod of printing: Offset Printing house: Joh. Enschedé Solan and Ludvig are now starring in the new Norwegian animated film, Solan and Ludvig: Christmas at Pinchcliffe. This news was from twitchfilm.com on November 11, 2013: A stop motion hedgehog and magpie own the box office in Norway this week, where Rasmus Sivertsen's Solan And Ludvig: Christmas In Pinchcliffe has posted Norway's second best opening weekend in a decade. How strong was it? If you include paid previews, Solan And Ludvig sold one hundred and seventy four thousand tickets. Compare that to Iron Man 3, which had been the year's top opener until now with just under ninety nine thousand...in the last decade only 2012 offering Kon-Tiki has opened bigger. 3 Lodge News Fra Presidenten We had a wonderful meeting this month. Karen Weiberg gave an interesting program on knitting that was filled with great information. It was wonderful to see all of the beautiful Norwegian sweaters worn by our members as part of our presentation for the evening. Thank you to all of the models - their sweaters showed all of the different patterns in Norwegian knitting. Karen mentioned the Slow TV program on Norwegian television. The web site is: Thank you to all who contributed to the Foundation. We have seen how our lodge has benefited, so we know that it is an important feature of the Sons of Norway. Next month is the Julebord and we could use a few more helpers to set up the food table. Please offer to help in this" Norwegian family celebration". There are some months next year that need a few more hostesses. If you are able to help, please contact Pat Carlson. HAVE A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING!! Kathy Torsk & Meatball Dinner Pictures Thank you to the following people for bell ringing for the Salvation Army on Saturday, December 8 th : 9-11: Clayton & Char Lance; 11-1: Ron and Sharon Kalmes; 1-3: Al & Judy Linder; 3-5: Dana Carlson & Dave Hegdahl; 5-6: Kathy Stevens. 4 Board Meeting Minutes, November 7, 2013 Lodge News [We met on Thursday at the Maplewood library after inclement weather forced rescheduling the meeting from Tuesday.] Attendees: Kathy Stevens, Ron and Susan Stow, Linda Holmstrom, Kathy Manderscheid, Laura Sherman, Pat Carlson, Mary Beth and Dave Mutchler, and Maf Berg. We began by discussing summer language camp scholarships. Maf Berg explained how sizeable scholarships had allowed her girls to attend Skogfjorden, and made a plea for us to increase our help to families who wish to attend. Together with her own generous contribution for this purpose, she made a very strong case. After discussion, we passed a motion to support at least four kids at 50% of their tuition. The rule still is in place that the sponsoring parent or grandparent must have been a lodge member for at least one year. We reviewed the October meetings and the Torsk and Meatball Dinner. Although there was a learning curve at our new site, the dinner went well. There will be some changes next year to smooth things out and serve hotter food. The dinner, silent auction, and bake sale showed a net profit of $1632. We reviewed our goals as a lodge for 2013 and evaluated our progress to date. We also set updated goals for With a very full newsletter for December, these will be published in January. Susan has two new members in the Junior Lodge, Josie and Freya Haugen, daughters of new member Bridget Haugen. The dancers will again be in the Winter Carnival parade; we approved the $60 registration fee and the cost of renting a better loudspeaker system for the float. She mentioned that the Stoughton dancers will be in St. Paul on January 19. This will be a rare chance to see these wonderful dancers on our home turf! The Middel-Lag orienteering on October 26 went well, although with just five attendees. Their news and events are available via FaceBook, and can be found by searching for Middel-Lag or Synnove-Nordkap on FaceBook. We discussed our needs for the 2014 slate of officers. There are a number of openings which we seek to fill, with Vice- President being the most important. Karen Weiberg is confirmed for our November meeting; the cost is $75 for her program on Norwegian sweaters. We discussed our coming programs for Ski for Light will be the January program. Submitted by: Dave Mutchler, Secretary The next board of directors meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 3 at the Shoreview Library conference room, as the usual meeting site is not available. Lodge Meeting Minutes November 12, lodge members and guests attended our November meeting at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. We began promptly at 7:00 as President Kathy Stevens welcomed everyone and asked if there were any guests. Mike and Patty Brein have moved to the area from Colorado, and Bob and Guri Clark from California. In both cases, they were members of SON lodges. We welcome them as future members, hopefully! Having forgotten to collect for Foundation in October, we made a special push to do it in November, collecting $330. For each $25 donation you got a chance to win the print that Cindy Olson had brought in October. Mary Beth Mutchler won it. All veterans were asked to stand and be recognized, then we had a moment of silence in memory of 22 year member Dallas Zimmerman.. Sheryl Hove gave us a brief language lesson. We asked if there were any volunteers for the vacant Board positions for next year, but there were none. We celebrated the November birthdays of Jean Draheim and Dave and Shirley Hegdahl, and the November anniversary of Bob and Geri Clark. Kathy Kaluza won the drawing for the $5 door prize. Everyone was asked to take home three of our brochures and to try to find interested people to receive them. We enjoyed a very interesting program on Norwegian sweaters and the history of knitting in Norway by Karen Weiberg. Afterward she had many interesting comments about the many sweaters worn that evening by our members. We thank Linda Erickson, Linda Holmstrom, and Susan Stow for the tasty treats. Mange takk! 7 Lodge News Junior Lodge Update A tremendous turn-out at our November rehearsal twenty-two out of our twenty-five dancers were able to attend! Three hipp, hipp, hurra birthdays this month: Kaia Larsen, Freya Haugen and Killian Stow. Special thanks to Emma Steinmetz for delicious treats! We appreciated Sydney Spreck leading a review of the Per Sjuspring song dance. The second city on our imaginary tour of Norway at this meeting was Røros, population 6,000. This town was established in 1646 around the copper mining industry. Eighty plain wooden structures facing the main street, cover the courtyards in back that are the focus in the neighborhood. We checked out the location of Røros on a map of Norway, showed a few photos of the landscape and talked about reindeer herding by the Sami families in the region. In our efforts to learn some more Norwegian language, we had objects that were the en words from October s meeting, like en ball, en kopp, en hatt, en katt, en penn, en potet, en tomat, en båt. Most are just like English except for the spelling and pronunciation, yet easy enough to understand and remember. We passed the objects from person to person in a circle and each person had to say the word aloud på Norsk, of course. The knitting moms were quite busy while we rehearsed. They are up to the thumbs in their efforts and the mittens are looking great! We hope to have several pairs for the Winter Carnival parade. We are especially grateful that Sasha Aslanian is helping guide us through the complex Selbu vatn knitting! Everyone is looking forward to our annual Norwegian cookie baking day on Saturday, Dec. 21 st. There will be NO rehearsal on our usual second Saturday of the month, due to a conflict in the church schedule. Remember to bring a small box lined with waxed paper or a Tupperware to take home some of the cookies. If you have an electric krum kake iron to bring, that would be terrific. Moms, Dads and Grandparents are encouraged to help supervise this active meeting Sewing Help Needed for Junior Lodge Buttonhole expert for boys vest Blouse seamstress If you could help, please contact: Susan Stow Burle103@aol.com The pictures below are from our October meeting Gustavus Adolphus: SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 7

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS Dianne Anderson joined Synnøve-Nordkap in February as a result of knowing lodge members Maureen Austinson and Lenore Jesness who are also members of Dianne s church, First Lutheran, our former lodge home. As a new member, Dianne did not hesitate to get involved in lodge activities. She helped with the opening of the New Land, New Life, as did many of our longtime members. Festival of Nations has benefited from her help, as well, when Dianne made krumkake and buttered lefse for the event. She also has helped with the set-up for the Torsk and Meatball dinner. After Dave Mutchler called attention to the need for help on the other end of the dinner, Dianne says that she will sign up for clean-up next year. At Synnøve-Nordkap events, Dianne has enjoyed the monthly programs and likes that the lodge library is available every month. As a result, she has read Candace Simar s Abercrombie Trail series about Norwegian immigrants in Minnesota at the time of the 1862 Dakota War. Recently, she finished a mystery by the very popular Norwegian writer, Jo Nesbø. Last month, Dianne attended our lodge s Norwegian language class for the first time. She is looking forward to being a regular and to be able to speak a few lines of her maternal grandparents native language. Her mother held on to many of her Norwegian traditions so we always knew we were Norwegian and proud of it. Besides helping our lodge, Dianne volunteers at First Lutheran, where, among several things, she helps with a Hmong Elder group and has helped out with Southeast Asian Ministry. When she has time for herself, Dianne likes to read, garden, travel and spend time at their multi-family lake cabin in Ottertail County. Dianne Anderson is part of a group of nearly twenty new members in the lodge, who are already helping to continue the successes of Synnøve-Nordkap. Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 8
