2 Scandinavian Culture and News Temptations await in Forests around Oslo Active and eager hikers now have 50 new posts to find in the vast forests that surround Oslo. In a program similar to orienteering, the local ski association has just published a new booklet full of tempting destinations waiting to be found. The new booklet, Kjentmannsmerket, was launched recently by the members of Skiforeningen. Being kjent means being familiar, and Skiforeningen s goal is to make Oslo s forest even more user-friendly and familiar to the local population. All the forests are a paradise for hiking, biking and paddling in the summer and skiing and skating in the winter. The booklet is meant to get people out there and enjoy them. The Kjentmannsmerket booklet is full of 50 special spots to visit in the forests, chosen because they re especially scenic or have great views, historical or geographic significance. The user is offered a description of the site and where it is located on an excerpt from one of the detailed maps of the forests. GPS coordinates are also generally offered. Then it s up to the hiker/skier to plot a route and find the post so he or she can clip their booklet. The booklet is good for two years. Fifteen posts found during the two years will earn the hiker/skier a bronze pin, 25 posts a silver pin and 40 or more posts, a gold pin. These are rather like merit badges in scouting. Along the way, the user learns a lot about the forests known as marka and get a lot of fresh air and exercise as well. Some posts are relatively easy to reach. Others are downright difficult, requiring long hikes or bike rides to get near them, and then an orienteering challenge to find them. The booklets are available only in Norwegian, and available through Skiforeningen which has offices under the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. From: aftenposten.no. SAVE USED POSTAGE STAMPS FOR TUBFRIM The Angry Little Boy Vandals once again attacked Norway s most famous and cherished statue, Sinnataggen recently, painting the angry little boy bright pink. The vandalism was the latest to hit statues in the Vigeland collection within Oslo s Frogner Park, prompting calls for better security. This is Europe s largest sculpture park, noted Oslo tourism boss, Tor Sannerud. There is so much value gathered here that it should have its own team of security guards. Early-morning visitors to the park found the statue of a toddler having a temper tantrum covered with pink paint. A cryptic sign left next to the statue prompted speculation that the vandalism was part of protests over recent destruction of a center for youthful activists in Copenhagen. It s not the first time Sinnataggen has been damaged. Thieves sawed through its lower left leg in the early 1990 s and stole the statue. It was later found in a garbage dump. All the statues created by Gustav Vigeland in the Frogner Park are covered by round-the-clock video surveillance. Police were studying videos from the park taken during that time period in hopes of identifying the vandals. From: Aftenposten English Web Desk The Climate in Norway Given the extreme northerly position, the mainland climate in Norway is surprisingly mild. Norway is the northernmost country in the world to have open waters. This is due to the trade winds forced across the Atlantic Ocean by the American continent and the warm currents flowing north from the Equator towards the Norwegian Sea. Norway s climate fluctuates greatly from year to year, especially in its most northern parts. The lowest minimum temperature recorded is -51 C in Karasjohka-Karasjok in northern Norway. The average annual temperature swings from 8 C along the western coast to below freezing in the mountains. The coldest months of the year are January and February and the warmest are the inland areas in mid-july. The climate in Norway differs from that of the rest of Scandinavia. The tall mountain ranges dividing mainland Norway provide protection from precipitation to large areas of inland eastern Norway. 3 Lodge News Dear Members, I hope you are enjoying our beautiful spring, along with the chores associated with a change in seasons. We have had a busy first half of the year. Our summer lodge activities usually taper off a bit, but I think this summer will be busier than usual as we have added some new activities. Please take note of these opportunities on page 6. We hope they are of interest to many of you. I look forward to seeing you at our MidSummer Celebration on Tuesday, June 19, at Island Lake Park. Takk, Mary Beth Fra presidenten Thank you to the members, friends, and family who worked so hard for the Festival of Nations. The meetings, shopping, set-up, food preparation, and the four days at RiverCentre require many hands and many hours. I was excited to see our newest members pitching in so willingly, and to see again those of you who can always be counted on to help. Special thanks to Len Carlson for again leading this event. Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge Lodge Meeting Minutes Lodge Meeting Minutes, On a beautiful evening of May 9, 2007, 72 members attended the May meeting of the Synnove-Nordkop Lodge. President MaryBeth Mutchler called the meeting to order at 7 PM with the saying of the pledge and the singing of the national anthems. Len Carlson, chairman of the Festival of Nations committee thanked everyone for their help in setting up, taking down and serving in either the preparing of the food or the actual working the 4 days of the Festival of Nations. It was a very successful event. In fact we sold out of food. Len would like to have someone else step forward and assume the position of Chairman next year. Jim Townsend, Zone 2 Director commended us on the increase of members to our lodge. He spoke about Syttende Mai on May 15 at the American Swedish Institute. Membership Secretary Trudi-Johnson Richards introduced the newest members to the lodge as: Susan and Mary Flanagan, Gene Hanson, Gene Shefland, and Frank and Laura Sherman, plus a new transfer tonight: Steve Roste. Treasurer, Clayton Lance gave us the treasurer's report; we are awaiting the final bills from the Festival of Nations. The Secretary's report was approved as written in the Brevet. President Mary Beth reported the deaths of two members: Stella Berg and Roxanna Torvi, wife of Al (Axel) Torvi. We had a moment of silence in honor of their memories. There is still time to sign up for the tour to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts on either Sun., July 22 at 1:30 PM or Wed. Aug. 15 at 10:30 AM. The complete description of the event is printed in the May Brevet. We will be having the Mid-Summer Picnic at Island Lake Park on Tues. June 19 beginning with kubb playing, dinner at 6:30 PM, and followed by a Radio Band practice and a bonfire at 8:30 PM. Brats & buns will be available for $2. Each person should bring a item tp pass, plus beverages (we again have a wine and beer permit, but plastic or cans only, please)! We need help in setting up the games and maypole, cleaning up, etc. It promises to be a fun evening as usual. Ron Hale talked about the Slice of Shoreview on Sat. July 28. A suggestion was made that many of us participate in the parade, which is about 6-8 blocks long, by marching in the "Radio Band." This means we all carry a radio (FM reception and batteries needed) and march to some Norwegian Music. We could also give out information about the lodge. It would be a great time to wear our lodge T-shirts, or anything else Norwegian. Our April and May birthdays were: Sharon Amann, Gladys Helstedt, Iver Hustvedt, Lenore Jesness, Myrna Moffat, Joann Nordale, Ann Reeder, Al Torvi, and Jane Urness. A May anniversary was celebrated by our Zone 2 Director, Jim Townsend and his wife Carolyn. We then adjourned our meeting and Sharon Amann introduced our speaker for the evening, Gloria Anderson-Hegg and her husband, who sang and entertained us with stories. It was an evening enjoyed by all. Our servers for the evening were Ardyce Davies, Sharon Kalmes, and Jane and Andy Urness. Or, just sit and enjoy friends and nature. Supper will be at 6:30 PM, with a bon fire and s'mores at 8:30. This year there will be a special event after dinner. We have decided to enter the slice of Shoreview parade on Saturday, July 28. The route is very short: only 6-8 blocks. Our entry should be a lot of fun--it will feature our Peer Gynt dancers and the Synnove-Nordkap Radio Band, led by Rod Hale as our drum major. It s an event you won t want to miss! A radio band is simply a group of people all carrying boom boxes or transistor radios that are playing the same songs. We have acquired a mini-transmitter that will send an FM radio signal feet in all directions. It will be in the center of the band, with all the band members carrying radios tuned to the correct FM frequency. That should create a very loud band, and we ve asked Susan Stow to help us choreograph our march numbers. We will probably do just three songs, with one done exclusively by the dancers and the other two by everyone. Rod Hale will be our leader. He has seen this done before, and it is a blast! Plan to bring a radio and participate. You won t regret it. To get to Island Lake Park, take the Victoria exit from 694 and go south just a block or two to the park entrance on the right. We have Shelter #2, which is the closest shelter to the lake in front of you as you come in. Let the Norwegian flags and our lodge banner guide your way! 7 Scholarships & Opportunities Scholarship Recipients for 2007 On behalf of the Board of Directors for our Lodge, I am pleased to announce that Craig Hanson, and Jennifer Urban are our $500 scholarship recipients for the academic year. Craig is the son of Lodge members Gary Hanson of Woodbury and the grandson of member Dorothy Hanson of Edina. Craig plans to pursue a career in business at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Craig also has been very active in school activities and athletics. Craig has also been very active at Trinity Presbyterian in Woodbury where his father is pastor. He has served as lay liturgist, youth group leader on three mission trips to Mexico, and Christmas caroler, among other activities. Jennifer is the daughter of Lodge member Rebecca Urban and the granddaughter of member Ken Nelson. Jennifer has a very impressive academic resume with membership in Phi Theta Kappa (as a high school student), the Dean s List, and Honor Roll. She too has been active in athletics. At school she has been involved with tutoring other students in math and ASL. In church, she has helped with mission work, Sharing and Caring Hands, and teaching Vacation Bible School. Her career aspirations are to become a physical therapist In addition to the college scholarships, Synnove-Nordkap also provided a $200 scholarship to member Claire Keller to attend two-week session at Skogfjorden Language Village. Claire has attended Skogfjorden seven times previously and has lived in Norway while her father, Clayton Keller, taught and did research in Trondheim. The Lodge also donated $100 each to Hanna Torvi, granddaughter of Axel Torvi, and Anya, Erik, and Stefan Nelson to attend a one-week session at Skogfjorden. Anya, Erik, and Stefan are the children of lodge members Mark and Sara Nelson. Submitted by Leif Erickson, Scholarship Chairperson Synnøve-Nordkap Members: This time of year, the Lodge begins to look at the Board of Director openings for the coming year. One can be proud looking at our active lodge and all that has been accomplished during the year. One can pause and speculate, looking back at the members from the past who organized and formed our lodge. Through the years, members have become involved, held board offices and volunteered for many things to keep the lodge functioning. Just think, since the first meeting in 1902 and becoming known as Synnøve-Nordkap, Sons of Norway Lodge #1-008 in 1969, all of the people who have been involved through the years. Kind of mind boggling, isn t it? Maybe during the summer months you could take a look and see if you might find some time to become more involved in our exciting and active lodge here in St. Paul. Below are a few items to keep in mind while you contemplate your involvement: The rewards of volunteerism are numerous. Here are some benefits: Volunteering is a way to share your personal gifts and experiences with others. Volunteering provides the chance for people to try something new and challenges them to work outside their comfort zone. Many volunteers find a new talent when they begin helping others and continue to fine-tune already existing talents. Volunteering can allow individuals to fulfill lifelong dreams and ambitions. Many volunteers choose to serve in an area that fulfills their innermost desires, which too often have taken a backseat to school, career and family. Volunteering opens doors to new communities, friends and professional contacts. You can develop or share networking skills, improve organizational or management expertise and increase interpersonal proficiency. Many volunteers find their service builds self-confidence, self-esteem and healthy attitudes as they help others. Finding new skills and talents, meeting new people and serving others can try help you feel good about yourself. Volunteering is a great way to explore possible career options and it allows you to discover whether you like certain kinds of work without making drastic career changes. Volunteering can be a life-changing experience. A huge thanks to all the folks through the years who have given so much to our Synnøve-Nordkap lodge!!! The Corner Library by Trudi Johnson-Richards Nineteenth Century Migration. The Norwegians are the pioneers of the Scandinavian immigration in America in the nineteenth century. It is of particular interest that the three Scandinavian peoples in this country seem to have gravitated toward the same relative positions which they occupy in Europe. The Danes generally have settled between the 38 th and 44 th parallels of latitude, the Swedes between the 40 th and 48 th and the Norwegians between the 43 rd and 49 th. The Swedes and Danes are spread more over the entire country, whereas the Norwegians, to a very large extent, are to be found in compact settlements. Immigrants were fortunate in the selection of fertile land. It did happen that immigrants were induced by unscrupulous speculators to settle in marshes which in the middle of the summer had dried up. At Beaver Creek, Iroquois County, Illinois, in , almost the entire colony of 86 died of malarial fever. Cholera raged at Lake Muskego, Racine County in Wisconsin. In 1852, the steamer Atlantic sank in Lake Erie carrying 300 Norwegian immigrants to their death. It took a great deal to discourage these pioneers. They saw that the land was fertile and felt that the reward would come some day. And in most cases it did. They did not move away from the swamps to any great extent; they drained them and transformed them into flourishing settlements. Scandinavian Societies. Norwegians have a decided penchant for organizations. It is natural for them to be doing things and innate to them is the axiom of the old Norsemen: Med lov skal landet bygges. They demanded orderly processes. In settling in the New World, they very early began forming organizations to serve their particular needs. The Norwegian churches gained a firm foothold. Norwegian immigrants and their descendants availed themselves of educational opportunities as members of the teaching staffs of American colleges and universities. Societas Scandinaviensis was formed in Philadelphia in George Washington was an honorary president and it is said he spoke of his own Scandinavian ancestry on festive occasions in this society. Boston can rightfully claim to have the oldest Norwegian society in the country which was founded on September 19, The earliest trace of Norwegian societies in New York is found in a notice in Emigranten (published in Inmansville, Rock County, Wisconsin) about a Norwegian-Danish dramatic society putting on Hostrup s Gjenboerne at Buxton Theater, Christmas, There were Norwegian societies in Chicago as early as Ole Bull, on a concert tour, paid the city a visit. Usually when Norwegians formed a society at that time, they would call it Scandinavian. When the Scandinavian Society arranged a party in his honor, he demanded no Swedes or Danes would be admitted. Before leaving Chicago, the violinist organized a third society, Norge. In 1860, a society Nora was organized in Chicago. This society, under the same name, later became the first lodge of Knights of the White Cross. In March 1939, Nora Lodge No. 415 was organized although disbanded in December The Scandinavian Society of Madison, Wisconsin, on May 17, 1864, celebrated the golden jubilee of Norway s political independence. In 1869, a Scandinavian Society was formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the first of hundreds of societies organized in this city by Norwegians, Swedes and Danes in the course of these 75 years. The common human craving for security can only be satisfied by living among your own. So with the newcomers; by settling among people of their own nationality, they immediately found security. It is quite natural that these foreign-speaking groups should band together for the purpose of promoting common interests. Within these societies they learned the language of the land.
