2 Norwegian Culture and News By Judy Stanke Concordia Language Villages Prepare Students to be Global Citizens Skogfjorden, the Norwegian language village at Concordia College s language immersion camp, is celebrating it s 50th anniversary this year, bringing attention to the language camps which offer a unique summer opportunity for students ages 7 through 18. Concordia language villages offer an unparalleled experience for students to learn one of 15 world languages by means of immersion in the language and culture during participation in a residential summer camp in northern Minnesota near Bemidji. Campers come from all 50 states and sometimes from other countries. Counselors include native speakers and language professionals, and it is not unusual for former campers to return to camp as a counselor-trainees. The idea of offering a language immersion program was suggested by Gerhard Haukebo, a Concordia College faculty member, in 1960, and the first camp began in 1961 with a two-week German session. It was a resounding success and more languages were steadily added. Following German, French was added in 1962 and then both Spanish and Norwegian came on board. The current list of languages includes German, French, Spanish, Norwegian, Russian, Swedish, Finish, Danish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, English, Italian, Arabic and Portuguese. In 1964, an idea was conceived to construct permanent, architecturally authentic village sites and property was procured on Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minnesota. Construction of the German village Waldsee and Norwegian village Skogfjorden began in 1969 with other villages to follow. Camps are offered for periods of two to four weeks and students are able to obtain high school language credit for the month-long sessions. A highlight during camp is the celebration of International Day, when campers from all of the villages come together to share dance, music, food and fun with each other and with parents and visitors. Concordia language immersion camp is a truly enriching experience which has been described as the next best thing to being there. Strong friendships are formed and the appreciation of language in the context of culture makes camp an experience to be forever remembered. If you know someone who is a potential camper, check out this information on the Concordia Language Village website: In addition to summer camp, year-round opportunities are offered for every age group, including adults. International Day will be celebrated on July 6 and August 10, 2012 At International Day at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minn., villagers and staff gather together at Waldsee, the German Language Village, to celebrate different languages and cultures. There's a Peace Site Ceremony, Global Market, soccer, games, music and food from all around the world. Plus, you can see what it's like to attend a Concordia Language Villages program and tour the Waldsee site, which is built to echo German culture. A special celebration will be held on June at Skogfjorden, to celebrate it s 50-year anniversary. Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge normally meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM At First Lutheran Church 463 Maria Avenue (at 8th Street East, 2 Blocks North of Metro State University) Saint Paul, Minnesota Voice messages: (See back cover for officers) Web Page: < Sons of Norway International: < SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue , Page 2

3 Lodge News Fra Presidenten Hallo og gud dag! During the past month, members of Synnøve-Nordkap lodge have stepped forward in a variety of ways to help promote the lodge s activities. From the Urban Exploration event at the Landmark Center, through the Festival of Nations and onto the Junior Lodge trip to Stoughton, WI for Syttende Mai many members have donated their time and money to make these events successful. Mange takk to all who have helped. The celebration of Syttende Mai 2012 is now history and we look forward to the midsummer festivals, especially to our own Midsummer Picnic on June 19 th. Be sure to bring your children and your grandkids to Island Park where there will be special activities for them, such as games and crafts with Jeane Pearson, and a magic act by entertainer Fred Baisch. Synnøve-Nordkap will be represented by Sharon Amann, Kathy Stevens, Susan Stow and Ron Stow. Sheryl Hove is serving as an alternate. Delegates of lodges from Minnesota to Texas will discuss resolutions to change the by-laws of Sons of Norway and to send approved resolutions on to the international convention taking place in Fargo, North Dakota in August. Through Susan Stow, our lodge has put forth a resolution recommending that Sons of Norway reestablish the Viking for Kids magazine, or something in its place to help promote interest in the Sons of Norway among younger parents and their children. Dear members, when you hear of an activity or a program which you think may be of interest to the members of Synnøve-Nordkap, please contact our Cultural Director, Gene Hanson, or any of the board members listed in the newsletter. You are also encouraged to get involved in the lodge s museum display project, which will take place at the Landmark Center, downtown St. Paul from February through June Jeane Pearson is the head of the committee. Ron Kvaas is in charge of artifacts. Contact him to temporarily loan a Norwegian-American artifact for display. Ron is also looking for volunteers to be interviewed about their artifacts. Kathy Stevens is arranging a calendar of events to complement the display. Contact her with your suggestions about cultural events to have during the course of the display. She is looking for cultural skills demonstrators, such as carvers, weavers, needleworkers, musicians, etc. This museum display will be a major event for our lodge and will put Synnøve-Nordkap on display throughout the state. How can you help? Vi ses på pikniken! We ll see you at the picnic! 7 Lodge News June Junior Lodge Update Hipp, hipp, hurra, til Syttende Mai! Mange tusen takk, many thousand thanks to the generous support of a Sons of Norway Foundation, Helping Hands grant for children, and our Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, the Peer Gynt Dancers were able to make the adventurous trip to Stoughton, WI on Saturday, May 19 th for their Constitution Day festivities. It was an early start for junior and senior lodge members boarding the bus by 7:30 a.m. The coach bus rolled along in the sunshine, arriving in Stoughton at noon, where we were met by Nancy, Mark, Emily and Matthew Fjestad, members of Synnøve-Nordkap, and Nancy s mother and family. What royal treatment! The children quickly changed into their bunader before tasting the delicious lunch. The Fjestad s had set up chairs in a shady spot on Main Street for our senior lodge members to view the parade. The Peer Gynt Dancers were about number six in the parade line-up, behind the Stoughton High School Dancers on their float. Carl Tomlinson, Scott Kneeskern, and Ron Stow were our banner carriers to proclaim our parade unit. With two groups of partners in two lines, we spread out across the street. At first, we had our dancing music playing from the boombox in a decorated wagon, but the music stopped every time the wagon rolled over a bump, so we carried the boombox instead. How welcoming it was to hear, Yeah, Minnesota! as we danced along the parade route. The dancers did their very best at coping with the 92 degree temperature. We were so grateful for the water bottles on ice in the wagon. At Main and Division Streets, there was a dancing area cordoned off for folk dancing performance. First the Stoughton Dancers performed two dances, and then Peer Gynt children were asked to partner with the high school dancers for a couple numbers, Klappdans and Tre Tur fra Fana. Wow! That was so much fun! Our kids were beaming and so proud! Then the Peer Gynt Dancers taught three audience participation dances to children after the Stoughton group went on to their next performance. While watching the Stoughton Dancers perform, those of us from Synnøve-Nordkap who were there, were wishing that you all had been able to make the trip. There are keyboard players who provide the spirited renditions of the Norwegian folk tunes. Dance after dance was at a high energy level, engaging the audience with actions, facial expressions and incredible footwork. The Halling closed the show to rousing applause as the Stoughton guys kicked a hat off a pole, did hand stands, flips, cartwheels and many acrobatic feats. Box suppers had been delivered to the bus to enjoy on our drive back to Minnesota. Our thanks to Maureen Austinson for small bags of crackers and candy for the kids, too. As I asked our Peer Gynt Dancers what the highlight of the day had been, the responses were: Dancing with the Stoughton Dancers, or Watching the Stoughton Dancers do the Halling. 8 Norwegian/English Word Of the Month : Sprat Contributed by Judy Linder of Unit 7 Group. Sprat, also known as bristling, is a small, herring-like marine fish. It is found in European waters and has silver gray scales and white-gray flesh. The fish is around 12% fat inits flesh and is a source of many vitamins. It can be canned, salted, fried, grilled, baked and marinated. The majority of canned sprats that are sold to the public are harvested off the coast of Norway. Benefit News What To Do With A Tax Refund It s rare to get a windfall these days. That may be one reason so many people have so much more money than necessary withheld from their paycheck for taxes. The average refund has been around $3,000 for the past two years. I usually counsel against giving Uncle Sam an interest-free loan, but if you have a refund check coming your way, consider using it to bolster your personal balance sheet. You could use the extra cash to make a dent in debt - for example, to reduce high interest credit card debt or pay down the principal on your mortgage. Or you could beef up your long-term savings say, by adding to your retirement savings in an IRA, or by helping your kids or grandkids save for college. You could rebuild your emergency fund or start saving for a down payment on your next home. These are just a few ideas to get you started. 9 Corner Library By Trudi Johnson-Richards Lake Wobegon Summer 1956 by Garrison Keillor follows the life of fourteen year Gary as he grows up in the summer of 1956 in Minnesota. The story moves along in a lazy manner. The days blend together until you wake up and realize the summer is half over. This would be a boring book except Garrison Keillor is such a gifted storyteller. The characters are wonderfully human. Some readers may be offended by parts, but this book is about life and life isn t always innocent and pretty. Fourteen year old Gary tells it like he sees it during one sleepy summer in his tiny Minnesota hometown. It is 1956 and the Lake Wobegon community is caught between Gary s family strict religious ways and the townspeople s familiar routines. Gary has sexual fantasies and dreams of youth. But, the world around them is forcing changes every day things like rock music and new attitudes and behavior about life in general. All his life, Gary has admired his sophisticated older cousin Kate, now 17. Kate has begun drifting away from Gary this summer, largely due to he newfound infatuation with a local baseball star named Roger. Suddenly, Gary is just a tagalong little cousin, and he feels powerless to make things right with his beloved Kate. Aunt Eva has always been a mother to Gary. The revelation of a long-buried, never-discussed family secret about Aunt Eva makes Gary uncomfortable in his aunt s presence. Aunt Eva, however, continues to dote on her nephew. The book is terrific, delightful and funny. Gary s summer is filled with characters you won t soon forget. His pious family, although smothering, are hilarious. Keillor manages to depict a world, which is both ordinary and extraordinary, in that it is about everyday people and events. It is a detailed story that readers will remember for a long time after and long to read further adventures about Lake Wobegon residents. There is nothing like a Keillor book to take you out of the big city craziness and bring you to another time and place. This is Garrison Keillor back 56 years to the summer of 1956, a charming slice of Americana, Wobegon style. Garrison Keillor was born in Anoka, Minnesota, and is the host and writer of A Prairie Home Companion. He is the author of nine books including Lake Webegon and Webegon Boy. A teacher at the University of Minnesota and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, he lives in St. Paul with his wife and daughter.
