1 SynNor Brevet Published monthly by Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge #1-008 WEB SITE: District 1 Family Lodge of the Year 2006, 2008 July-August 2012 Number 12:7 Voice Messages: The St. Paul Sons of Norway, Synnove-Nordkap Lodge has been developing a new museum exhibit on "New Land, New Life: Norwegian Immigration, " for display at The Landmark in downtown St. Paul, beginning February 21-June 20, About 20 of our talented members have been meeting regularly for a year. We have 8 sub-committees working together on various tasks. The exhibit is coming together with 19 of the 20 panel-texts nearing completion and the Photo Selection Committee with Ruth Gibson, Joanne Englund, and Lenore Jesness acquiring the last photos necessary for the exhibit. NAHA has been most helpful and generous with their contributions of photographs. Ron Kvaas chairs the Artifacts Committee, and several SON members have indicated their willingness to loan personal mementos for the display during the 4-month run of the exhibit.this fall, Ron Kvaas will also be filming those members as they share the background of their artifacts for a closed circuit video loop, which will be part of the display and exhibit. We are attempting to schedule some Landmark events to promote attendance at the exhibit, as well as draw new members into our SON lodge. Thanks to all our volunteers and for your patience with this wonderful project, which promotes our Norwegian heritage. -Jeane Pearson, , Museum Chair September Lodge Meeting : Dose Yohnsons and an Ice Cream Social Lodge member Lowell Johnson and his sister Pamela (Pringle) will entertain us with some old time Scandinavian music and good ol Norsky humor at our Lodge Meeting on September 11, The accordion, guitar and harmonica will get your toes tapping! The silly stories, corny jokes and funny songs will get you laughing and knee slapping! Lowell brings the Norsky and Pam the Norwegian. Together they are carrying on a tradition of Yohnsons that played for house parties in the farm country of southern Minnesota many years ago.

2 Norwegian Culture and News By Judy Stanke The Midnight Sun of Northern Norway The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon which occurs in the far northern latitudes, including parts of Norway, when the sun is visible for 24 hours continuously. The further one goes north, the more days per year this phenomenon occurs. During the winter, the opposite phenomenon, known as polar night, occurs in which the sun stays below the horizon all day long. To view some beautiful time-lapse photography of what the photographer calls The Arctic Light click here: Approximate dates when you can see the midnight sun in Norway Where: When: The Arctic Circle 12 June - 1 July Bodø 4 June - 8 July Svolvær 28 May - 14 July Harstad 25 May - 18 July Bardufoss 23 May - 19 July Andenes 22 May - 21 July Tromsø 20 May - 22 July Bossekopp 19 May - 24 July Vardø 17 May - 26 July Hammerfest 16 May - 27 July Berlevåg 15 May - 28 July The North Cape 14 May - 29 July Longyearbyen 20 April - 22 August (Svalbard) To Arctic Animals, Time of Day Really Doesn't Matter ScienceDaily (Mar. 11, 2010) In the far northern reaches of the Arctic, day versus night often doesn't mean a whole lot. During parts of the year, the sun does not set; at other times, it's just the opposite. A new study reported online on March 11th in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, shows that Arctic reindeer have come up with a solution to living under those extreme conditions: They've abandoned use of the internal clock that drives the daily biological rhythms in other organisms. Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge normally meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM At First Lutheran Church 463 Maria Avenue (at 8th Street East, 2 Blocks North of Metro State University) Saint Paul, Minnesota Voice messages: (See back cover for officers) Web Page: < Sons of Norway International: < SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 2

3 Yumpin yimminy it s been hot! I hope you all are keeping cool and enjoying this otherwise beautiful summer weather. We all certainly seemed to have an enjoyable time at the lodge picnic in June. Per usual, there was plenty of great food to eat, and lots of social opportunities for members. It was terrific to see the children take part in the games and dancing around the midsummer pole. The expressions on the children s faces were so precious as they watched the magic tricks. Thanks to all who helped make the picnic an absolute success. Mange tusen takk! Elsewhere in the Brevet, you will read a report on the District 1 convention. Thanks to Kathy, Sharon and Susan for accompanying me to St. Cloud and for supporting Synnøve-Nordkap at the district level Our vice president, Kathy Stevens, has volunteered to attend the newly-developed Sons of Norway leadership workshop in Fargo, ND in advance of the international convention. I m sure this will be of tremendous benefit to Kathy, and to our lodge, as she becomes lodge president in January. Dear members, when she enters the top office, Kathy will need a vice president. Please consider stepping forward, as Kathy did, and place your name in nomination for this position, when nominations are called for this fall. The office of secretary will also be open, as Sue Halvorson has announced that she will not be seeking that position for next year. As I m sure all of you members do, I also personally want to thank Sue for her years of service to the lodge and to me, in keeping track of the activities of our lodge and board. Sue, you have set a fine example of dedication to your office. As our Norwegian relatives would say, kjempebra! I am looking forward to representing Synnøve-Nordkap and District 1 at the Sons of Norway International Convention in Fargo in August. With the theme Sailing into the Future, we will be discussing the future of Sons of Norway and of our lodges, and what we can do to help insure that the work of previous and current members can continue with upcoming generations. Please think about the role that you can play as Synnøve- Nordkap and Sons of Norway sail into the future. Alt for nå! That s all for now. Ron Lodge News Fra Presidenten Sunshine News Best wishes to Joyce Kvaas, wife of Ron, as she recovers from surgery on her leg. Best wishes to Gene Hanson as he undergoes treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester We wish Lloyd Fanum a speedy recovery after hurting his knee and spending several days in the hospital. The service will be led by Gracia Grindal, Professor of Rhetoric at Luther Seminary. Olsok, (literally the wake of Olav) the eve of the festival of Saint Olav, has been celebrated in the Nordic countries for almost 1000 years. The event marks the martyrdom of Saint Olav at the battle of Stiklestad (near Trondheim) on July 29, Olav was canonized the next year and made Rex Perpetuus Norvegiae, meaning all succeeding kings were vessals of his eternal reign.

6 District 1 Convention Report Hats off to Kråkeelva Lodge of Hutchinson, Trollheim Lodge of St. Cloud and Vennekretsen Lodge of Anoka for hosting the District 1 Convention in St. Cloud, MN from June 14th -16th. District 1 encompasses Zones 1-8 from Minnesota to Texas with eighty-five lodges and over ten thousand members. With the theme, Sustaining our Nordic Heritage, the three lodges worked tirelessly to make the convention a success! Sharon Amann, Kathy Stevens, Ron Stow and Susan Stow represented Synnøve-Nordkap at this convention. We addressed concerns including recruitment and retention of members. This topic was the core of the keynote speaker, Joe Anotti of the American Fraternal Alliance, who shared that financial security is core. Mr. Anotti feels Sons of Norway needs to create an organization for fifty years down the line. Another of his suggestions was to leave the word lodge in the past, referring to each group with the more modern word chapter. We would be known, simply, as Synnøve-Nordkap Sons of Norway, St. Paul, MN. New members want webinars with electronic episodic meetings, said Mr. Anotti. Fifteen resolutions were presented by various lodges. These were reviewed by the resolutions committee, which recommended passage of only two of them. The delegate assembly voted to send four resolutions to the International Convention for consideration. The first to pass was recommended by Vennekretsen of Anoka that Sons of Norway offer cultural programs on-line that enrich the cultural skills programs. Trollheim Lodge of St. Cloud proposed that a committee be established to review a name change for the organization. The resolution which generated the most discussion was proposed by Syttende Mai Lodge on resuming the Viking for Kids magazine making it a subscription based publication. The resolution from Synnøve-Nordkap was to establish a yearly budget to develop, foster and promote creative new youth activities and to create an interactive computer program for children available through a Sons of Norway membership. This was defeated. Newly elected District 1 officers: Barbara Olson President, Louise Bakken- Vice-President, Dennis Rusinko Secretary, Arlene Fields Treasurer, Karen Aakre Social/Cultural Director, Dorothy Zimmerman Publicity, Jim Townsend Sports and Recreation, Marily Syverson Youth Director, and Chris Elwell Zone 1 Director. The International Convention will be hosted in Fargo, North Dakota by Kringen Lodge 25 from August Synnøve-Nordkap president Ron Stow will be a District 1- Zone 2 delegate in Fargo. Our vice president, Kathy Stevens, is attending the Sons of Norway leadership conference to be held there prior to the international convention. 8 Norwegian/English Word Of the Month: Slalom Contributed by Judy Linder of Unit 7 Group. Slalom is an alpine skiing discipline involving skiing between poles causing quick, short turns. The word slalom is from the Seljord dialect of Norwegian slalåm: sla, meaning slightly inclining hillside and låm, meaning track after skis. Slalåm was a trail used by Telemark boys and girls not yet able to try themselves on the more challenging runs. Today the Slalom and Giant Slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. Benefit News Health Care: Get Real When you re budgeting for retirement, be sure to get real when it comes to your health care line item. The painful truth: A 65 year old couple who live until age 92 can expect to incur $400,000 in unreimbursed medical cost, assuming an annual health care inflation rate of 6%, according to Fidelity Investments. What s worse, that figure does not include Long-term care expenses. Consider an annuity. Retirees who don t anticipate a fixed-income stream, such as a pension, should consider an immediate fixed payout annuity to pay for essential costs. Medicare Part B, which covers outpatient care, a Part D drug plan and a medigap policy can easily run a couple $550 a month. And they would still need to account for the costs of dental and vision care, hearing aids and drug co-pays. Still, the surest way to cut your medical costs in retirement is to stay fit. No matter your age, eat well and exercise. A jog on a treadmill now will hurt a lot less than a headache of paying huge medical bills later. Greg Hovland Financial Benefits Counselor ltcfinancial@msn.com Reference: Kiplinger s Personal Finance, July, Meet Our Members Chuck and Jean Draheim have been members of Synnøve-Nordkap for four and three years, respectively. Chuck joined because he wanted to learn more about his Norwegian background, which he gets from his mother s side, and found our lodge through Jean s friend, Kay Sandeen. Jean joined Sons of Norway to support Chuck in his quest for his cultural heritage. She has been involved in the Czech organization, Sokol, for her entire life and understands how important it is to learn about, and to preserve one s cultural heritage. In order to keep ethnic parity in their marriage and to support Jean, Chuck also belongs to Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota. Both enjoy preparing Norwegian food, especially during Christmas when they make lefse, krumkake, fattigmann, kringla and almond rusk. Chuck would like to make lutefisk, but in deference to Jean, only eats the delicacy away from home. Jean s sole high holy day of culinary obligation takes place at the Forest Lake lutefisk dinner. When asked what they like about Synnøve-Nordkap, the Draheims replied, The members, in true Norwegian form, have always been friendly and welcoming to both of us. As active members of Sons of Norway, Chuck and Jean regularly attend lodge meetings. He serves as marshall, setting up for meetings and escorting officers. Jean is a trustee, assigned to maintaining an inventory of lodge supplies. Thank you, Chuck and Jean Draheim, for your work for the lodge. Mange takk! 9 Corner Library By Trudi Johnson-Richards Mike and Else s Norwegian Songbook was first printed in August 1985; second printing November 1992 and third printing October 1999 Mike and Else share rich Scandinavian heritage through live performances, recordings and this songbook. A simplified pronunciation guide helps you with some of the basic sounds. Norwegian is much more phonetic than English is, so their letters usually sound the same in every situation. An e at the end of a word is always pronounced. When et comes at the end of a noun, the t is silent. Folksongs. John Johnson s Wedding is a favorite. You will recognize the chorus words There was Charlie Anderson and Emil Anderson, and Gustaf Anderson and Carl Anderson, and Per Anderson and Hjalmer Anderson, and Anders Anderson was there too. Another sing-a-long favorite is Oleanna. In the 1850 s, Ole Bull, Norway s famous concert violinist, bought 120,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania to start a colony for Norwegian farmers. Oleanna was written to poke fun at Ole s attempt at farming. (53 Norwegian/English Translation Sons) Children s Songs. Bae, bae, lille lami is Baa, Baa, Little Lamb; Fader Jakobiss Are You Sleeping; Lille Pedderkopp is The Itsy Bitsy Spider all familiar sons to us. (13 Children s Songs) Christmas Songs. Though many of Norway s Christmas traditions vary from place to place, there is one tradition which all of Norway shares young and old join hands and circle the tree, singing their favorite Christmas carols. After the songs are sung, it s time to open the gifts. O jul med din glede is a traditional Norwegian holiday song. On the first two verses, circle the tree in time with the music. When you come to the refrain, stop and do what the lyrics tell you. First clap, then turn around in a circle and finally curtsy and bow. Everyone does the curtsy and bow, not just the girls. On the third verse the rings around the tree have to move closer to the tree to be able to reach neighbors on each side. Cross your arms in front of you and stretch out your right hand to the person to your left, and your left hand to the person on your right. With hands clasped, pull your arms back and forth in a sawing motion while your feet remain planted. When you come to the refrain, clap, turn around, curtsy and bow just as you did on the first two chorus. Silent Night or Glade jul, music by Frans Gruber is included in this song book. (15 Christmas Carols). Hymns. I Jesu Navn is a traditional hymn. Charles C. Converse wrote Hvilken venn which we know this hymn as What a Friend we have in Jesus. (Nine Hymns). The Corner Library has two copies of Mike and Else s Norwegian Songbooks and are available for members to check out. YUST FOR FUN! My trip to the store... There was a bit of confusion at the store this morning. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the cashier said, "Strip down facing me." Making a mental note to complain to my congressman about Homeland Security running amok, I did just as she had instructed. When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They need to make their instructions to us seniors a little clearer! REMEMBER TO CHEER ON BOTH USA AND NORWEGIAN ATHLETES IN THE LONDON OLYMPIC GAMES!
