1 SynNor Brevet Published monthly by Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge #1-008 December 2015 Number 15:11 District 1 Lodge of the Year 2013 and Family Lodge of the Year 2006, 2008 It s Julebord! Our annual celebration will be held Dec. 8 th at 6:00 p.m. A beautiful holiday feast including all of our Scandinavian favorites such as: liver pate and crackers, potato sausage, meatballs, herring, salmon, shrimp, cheese, breads, Rødkal (red cabbage), Surkål (sweet/sour cabbage), beet pickles. rutabagas/carrots, sweet/sour cucumbers, red potatoes w/dill, fruit, Risengrøt (rice pudding), Rømmegrøt, dessert waffles and jam, Søtsuppe (Fruit soup), cookies, Krumkake, Sandbakkels, Rosettes, Spritz, and lefse! A little bit about Julebord: Christmas in Norway has retained its pre-christian name, Jul. The main event is on Christmas Eve, when the main meal is served and gifts are exchanged. There are several different traditions of main dishes served on Christmas Eve, around Norway. In Western Norway (Vestlandet), mutton ribs (Pinnekjøtt) is a common dish. Near the town of Voss, mutton head (Smalahove) is eaten. Lutefisk is another common dish. In Northern Norway, boiled cod is more common. In Eastern Norway pork ribs (Svineribbe) is the most common dish. With all these dishes, boiled potatoes are served. To some, Christmas Eve dinner begins with rice porridge (rommergrot) which contains one almond that wins a prize. A bowl is traditionally put out for the unpredictable Nissen so that he will continue to watch over the animals and not turn mischievous. Almost all Norwegian breweries produce traditional Christmas beer (juleøl), which is darker, stronger and has more flavor than the common Norwegian lagers. Breweries also produce a special Christmas soda (julebrus), which in some parts of the country is a red raspberry soda, with a Christmas label on the bottle. Akvavit is also common. Christmas dishes are also served on julebord, people from work gather in a restaurant around early December to eat Christmas food and drink. Also, a large variety of cakes or cookies (julekaker) are common. Traditionally, the mother of the house is expected to bake 7 types of julekaker. 2 Scandinavian Culture and News By Don Halvorson How Odin Became Santa Claus Age old Norse legends tell us that the Yule season and the dark nights of the Winter Solstice could be a dangerous time for the world of men. In Viking times, this was the time when gods and ghosts would come out from their home in Asgard, and swoop down over the rooftops of Midgard, to interfere once more in the lives of the humans below. Leading the Wild Ride was Odin astride his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir. Tall and gangley, and carrying a spear, he wore a blue hooded cloak and had a long white flowing beard. Beside him were the swordmaiden Valkryies and any other demon spirits that chose to tag along, terrorizing anyone who had the misfortune to be caught outside at that unfortunate hour. But, like many deities in mythology, Odin had another side to his personality. One of the many names he was known by was Jólnir, Master of the Jule. In this kinder role, he would slip down the chimneys of the houses in the village and leave the sleeping children toys and candy in exchange for the hay left there for his horse. Then, when done, he would return to Asgard, by way of Alfheim, home of the elves. There, deep in the earth, dozens of highly skilled dwarfs worked tirelessly day and night fashioning all the magical weapons and jewelry for the celestial family of the Æsir. Centuries passed and with the death of St. Olav and the grudging acceptance of Christianity by many, the worshipping of the old gods became forbidden. The Yule was changed to coincide with the Christian celebration. Even though the old ways would linger on, Odin eventually faded into memory. Through the next seven centuries he was followed by a succession of Christian replacements. First came St. Nicholas, a fourth-century Greek bishop who wore a red cloak, and became known as the patron saint of gift giving in most of Europe, except Scandinavia. But Nicholas, though kindly in disposition, discriminately gave presents to the good children only. Following the Reformation, all of Protestant Europe except Holland gave up the Catholic saints. There, Nicholas evolved into Sinter Klaus, a wise and kind old man with a red cloak, white beard, crosier and a white dress. Every December 6 th he would ride through the winter sky on his eight legged horse, and as expected, would come down the chimney, delivering his presents to all the deserving children. In the 17 th century, Dutch immigrants brought their traditions with them to America. Eventually Sinter Klaus becomes Santa Claus and the eight legged horse evolves instead into eight reindeer. Today in Norway, the Julenisse has inherited the gift giving tradition once belonging to Odin. Norwegians believe that the Julenisse were born under a rock in Vendfangerbukte north of Drøbak on Oslofjord. Every year, busloads of people travel to that site to view the collection of Julenisse, trolls, elves and gnomes held in residence there. Mange tusen takk to all who will be bringing the food, and to all for your fellowship. 4 Board Meeting Minutes, November 3, 2015 Attendees: Ron and Susan Stow, Laura Sherman, Pat Carlson, Trudi Johnson-Richards, Dianne Anderson, Dave and Mary Beth Mutchler, Sharon Amann, and Lynn Hoffmeyer. After a warm-up discussion, we reviewed the October lodge meeting and the Torsk & Meatball Dinner / Silent Auction / Bake Sale / Bazaar. The lodge meeting went well, and the dinner, etc. were a big success, with a profit of about $2300 overall. There was a bit of a hitch at the start of Friday s setup for the dinner as the GA folks seemed to be waiting for direction even though we had provided a diagram of the hall set-up. Once things got going, it went very smoothly, however. Saturday s events went well except for a shortage of meatballs at the end; this will not happen again. We previewed our November lodge meeting, with Ron leading the program on the New Land, New Life (NLNL) exhibit and Susan speaking on Foundation month and what the SON Foundation really does. The Bell Ringing sheets have only 2 of the 5 time slots filled as of this meeting. It appears to be getting more difficult to take this task on as a lodge. We discussed the upcoming Julebord in December. Sharon Kalmes is no longer able to lead this; Sharon Amann has stepped in to fill this void. She will update the sign-up sheets for the November lodge meeting. At Susan s Junior Lodge report, she said that they have an invitation to dance at the St. Paul Depot on Sunday, December 6, for the European Christmas Market. The time is still to be determined. Ron indicated that Mike Schmidt of the Spring Grove lodge contacted him about their buying a reproduction of our panels. The Board has no problems with this. Ron will check into how much it would cost them, as the Historical Society pictures were one time, one use. Chuck Draheim has said that the adult dance group at the Sokol lodge is interested in doing a program for us next year. Laura gave a financial report. Lodge News We discussed our Ski for Light donation; a motion (Sharon/Dave) was made and passed to give $100 to this very worthwhile program.. Mary Beth has received information regarding renewing our lease with Gustavus Adolphus. There are some issues with kitchen equipment that we wish to address. Ron agreed to be their primary contact with Dave as the alternate. We discussed the lease further and Ron took it for more serious review. Susan brought up the idea of our lodge hosting a future District 1 Convention. This would be a seriously large undertaking. We discussed it and tabled it for later follow-up. Dianne Halvorson has moved up to District 1 Cultural Director, and Ron has agreed to be the Zone 9 Director. Congratulations, Ron! Submitted by: Dave Mutchler, Secretary The next board of directors meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 1 in the Board Room at the Maplewood library. Lodge Meeting November 10, 2015 Only 43 lodge members and guests attended our November event at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. Joy Killeen was the only guest; she joined at the meeting. Welcome, Joy! Following the anthems and pledge, the minutes of the September meeting were approved as printed in the Brevet and Treasurer Laura Sherman gave her Treasurer s report. Sharon Amann brought Julebord sign-up sheets, which were circulated. The Bell Ringing sign-up sheets were also made available to members. Susan Stow discussed what the SON Foundation does, as November is Foundation month. She mentioned how our lodge has been helped financially on at least 3 occasions by the Foundation, including money for the fabric used in the bunads for the Peer Gynt Dancers. We paassed collection boxes around, which resulted in our members giving $ to the Foundation. Thanks for your generosity, members! We had a moment of silence for member Don Andy Anderson, who passed in early November. We celebrated the November birthdays of Maureen Austinson and Jean Draheim. Don Halvorson won the $5 door prize.. Ron Stow then served as MC and main speaker for our program on the New Land, New Life exhibit which was created largely by our lodge. Ron told how it got started in 2011 as an idea of Jeane Pearson and just grew from there. He related how over two years many lodge members worked on this large project, and had a map of the many stops in Minnesota that it has made. Susan Stow spoke on the research and text for the panels, Ron Kvaas spoke on the videos he learned to make and on the artifacts gathered from members and friends, Lenore Jesness spoke on the pictures researched and Joanne Englund on artifacts. Also, Leif Erickson gave his presentation about how he did the layout for the panels., Don Halvorson added a bit about his design of the rosemaled banner, and Kathy Stevens talked a little about the special events. We thank Pat Carlson, Trudi Johnson-Richards, and Kathy Kaluza for the great treats at the end of the evening. Submitted by Dave Mutchler, Secretary SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 4

As another year comes to a close, familiar events take place family gatherings, exchanges of gifts and plans for the future. While these are all things we anticipate and enjoy, the holiday season also can be a great time to review the ways life insurance can contribute to the well-being of those you care about. For the Family If you have family who rely on you now, your life insurance could help them carry on financially after you re gone. It s a way to care for those you love, whether they re your spouse and children, or extended family members like grandchildren. Life insurance benefits could provide them with essential health care, or it might allow them to stay in their home. It could even give the next generation of the family a chance at a quality education. Insuring Your Children Another way that you can care for your family is by buying life insurance for a young dependent. Getting kids covered when they re young can be particularly important should they later develop an illness that would otherwise make them uninsurable. Young adults are also good candidates for your assistance with life insurance. They may be putting off buying a policy until they marry or have children, not knowing that getting life insurance while young and also good health can help them qualify for best rates.
