2 Scandinavian Culture and News Perhaps we should take a cue from what Norway is doing to get their reckless drivers off the road! A Little in English... Record Numbers Lose Their Licenses 2008 earned a dubious record. Numbers from the police show that 6,137 individuals lost their driver s license last year. That s an increase of 12.5% from Never before have so many lost their license in a single year. It s very troubling that license-revocation is still increasing, said police official Odd Reidar Humlegård to TV2. It s especially serious when you consider the enormous danger reckless drivers pose to themselves and other motorists. In the course of the last five years we have seen a dramatic increase of 68% in the number of revocations said Humlegård. 5,277 of the motorists lost their license because of speeding. The rest were due to driving under the influence or for other dangerous driving. But even though the number of revocations is record-high, that doesn t mean that Norwegians are driving worse than they were before. The increase is due to the focus we have made on shutting down the worst drivers, said Humlegård. 3 Lodge News Dear Members, The month of April gets me thinking of Spring and New Beginnings. What better New Beginning than becoming a member of Sons of Norway? Why not give your friends, family, and acquaintances this opportunity by inviting them to our Membership Dinner Meeting on April 14 at 6:30 PM. The bonus is that you and your potential new member can have a lovely dinner at no cost. This is one of the best Win/Win propositions available in this rather down time. I look forward to meeting your guests and helping you promote our Lodge. After we all enjoy our wonderful dinner, we can visit the various cultural skills tables that will be available for us to peruse. Our guests will have opportunity to actually see and experience most of our areas of cultural interest. Each table will have facilitator and discussion group that will welcome participants. Wow, I can hardly wait for our April meeting Remember to check your home calendars and be prepared to sign up for the many volunteer opportunities at Festival of Nations. We need help to prepare food, set up and take down the booth, as well as a large number to staff the booth on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 30 through May 3, This is our Lodge s largest fundraising project, and we need everyone to pitch in. If you can t be an active participant, would you please consider donating money towards buying ingredients for the food we prepare? Please contact Patty Carlson in person at the meeting or call her at Blessings, Sharon Our sympathy to the family of Maury Jensen on his death in February. Maury enjoyed researching Norwegian genealogy, relishing the moments when he discovered yet another relative. The Stillwater resident and his wife, Jeane, took six trips to Norway. He was the business administrator for the Stillwater school district and was a founding member of the local Syttende Mai Society and was active in other Norwegian heritage clubs and activities. He also was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stillwater for more than four decades. When the church, which was originally the Norwegian Lutheran Church of Stillwater, celebrated its 150th anniversary recently, Jenson's research was used in the celebration. Maury was proud of his Norwegian heritage, and all that came in to play when he did the research for the church's archive. If you missed our March meeting, you didn t get a chance to hear 10 of our members give a brief talk on one of their ancestors. This interesting program gave us a chance to learn more about how our relatives came to this country, and included some very interesting and humorous stories about family history. This program was so well received that we plan to do another one in the Fall. The members who got to talk in March were Sharon Amann, Kim Johnson, Sharon Kalmes, Mary Beth Mutchler, Gary Hanson, Susan Stow, Don Halvorson, Chuck Draheim, Axel Torvi, and Shirley Brekke. We thank them for sharing their stories with us, and Rod Hale for conceiving and organizing this interesting Lodge Biography Project. SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue , Page 3

New Business: Clayton Lance gave a report on our investment balances in light of the current economy. Sharon Amann reported on the Joint Committee Meeting she attended. The board voted to make a contribution to Ski for Light. Ideas were brain stormed for a possible summer lodge outing and ideas for meeting programs next fall. Members are encouraged to sign up for the electronic version for a more timely delivery. Clayton Lance gave the treasurer s report. Rod Hale award three sports medals to Jeane Pearson, bronze for cycling and walking and enamel for idrettsmerke. A question was raised regarding how members would be notified in the event that the lodge meeting was cancelled due to weather. Members who have submitted their addresses for the directory will receive an and those who do not have can call the lodge phone after 4 pm in the afternoon. There will be a recorded message saying that the meeting will be cancelled. 6 Synnøve-Nordkap College Scholarships Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge is again offering $500 college scholarships to active Lodge or Junior Lodge members or the children or grandchildren of active Lodge members. The number of scholarships to be awarded will depend upon the number of highly qualified applications received as well as the state of the Lodge's budget. Although the Lodge reserves the right to award no scholarships, this year's process is likely to be highly competitive. Applicants may be either college students or high school students who are entering college in Fall 2009 pursuing any course of study. Preference, though, will be given to those who have been active Junior Lodge and/or Lodge members themselves. Previous recipients of this scholarship may apply again. Applications, which are now available on the Lodge s web site, will be mailed to Lodge Scholarship Chair, Clay Keller, and must be postmarked by April 6, Completed applications will be initially reviewed and, if selected for further consideration, the candidates will be asked by April 17 to interview either in person or by telephone with members of the Lodge Board prior to its Board meeting on May 5. Candidate(s) who are selected for scholarships will be notified shortly thereafter. Any scholarship awarded comes with the expectation of either service to the Lodge and/or a contribution at a Lodge meeting or program, with the minimum being a short talk about what has been done with the scholarship received. Please contact Clay Keller, Lodge Scholarship Chair ( ; keller.clay@gmail.com) if you have any questions. MPLS ST. PAUL INTERNATIONAL FILM FEST The 27th Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) goes on again this year from April 16 through April 30, at the St. Anthony Main Theaters, just across the Mississippi from downtown Minneapolis (free parking and a host of restaurants). 7 Junior Lodge News and Nordic Culture Junior Lodge Update Junior lodge is growing in more ways than one, that is growing in numbers, sizes and enthusiasm for the program. There are now twenty-one children who participate in our group. Some of those needed a new blouse, shirt or bunad to fit their growing size. Lastly, I would say we are growing in enthusiasm judging by the participation in our Norwegian show-and-tell at the March meeting. Mange tusen takk to senior lodge members who helped with the bunad sewing. Pam Bjorum sewed two boy s shirts and one blouse with beautiful expertise. Linda Erickson adjusted the vest pattern to fit Xavier Weston and sewed it just perfectly. Mae Hovland brought a children s book from Norway and a small figure to show. Ellen and Abbi Kneeskern showed a pair of wooden clogs that had a rosmaling design. Olive Weston shared a troll book and a most charming carved troll. Maggie, Caitlin and Andy Walsh, Cathie Reasoner s grandchildren amazed us all with a family needlework sampler from Nora Steinmetz, Wayne and Pam Bjorum s granddaughter told us about the Bjorum family farm in Norway with photos of the barn, her great-great grandfather who emigrated to the U.S. -Susan Stow Hardanger Embroidery or Hardangersøm Dove s eyes, picot, spider stitch, wrapped woven wheel, oblique stitch, and Star of the North are all names of traditional lacy filling stitches that make the geometrical Hardanger embroidery look so delicate. The geometric patterns basically are square, rectangular, diamond shaped, or cross like, but Hardanger patterns never form a picture. Origins of this type of handwork can be traced to Persia in the seventh century. From there, the drawn thread needlework traveled to Italy. Possibly Viking explorers brought home some samples of this art form for mothers or wives. Out of all the areas in Norway, why was this type of needlework named Hardanger embroidery? Perhaps it was the flax grown in the area that was carded, spun and woven into the even cloth needed for this drawn thread work now known as Hardanger fabric. The cloth has 22 threads to the inch that makes it easier to count out the fiber openings to create the pattern. Traditional Hardanger embroidery is white embroidery thread on white cloth with a geometrical pattern. It involves counted thread stitches pulled or drawn thread embroidery. This kind of needlework was used to decorate bunad collars, cuffs, caps and aprons. Otherwise, bands of Hardanger embroidery was used to embellish tablecloths, curtains, pillows, doilies, placemats and napkins. At the Paris Exposition in 1900, Brita Skalveit, from the Hardanger area, displayed an apron she had embroidered. Brita was recoganized with an award for her splendid needlework achievement. In order to successfully execute a Hardanger design, one needs to have the correct supplies. The material needs to be evenly woven with distinct holes in the weave. Blunt tapestry needles help create the satin stitches. Five satin stitches in a row are called a kloster block. Perle cotton thread is used unless one is embroidering on linen. Some needleworkers like to use an embroidery hoop, while others think that the hoop pulls the fabric distorting the pattern. Buying a narrow pointed, very sharp embroidery scissors is probably the most expensive supply needed for Handanger work. The scissors need to cut as well at the tip as at the base of the scissors. A magnifying glass might be needed for accuracy in counting the stitches. There are lighted magnifying glasses that could attach to a table or chair and be adjusted to the embroiderers eye level. Other magnifying glasses are worn around the neck to rest on the chest and provide that extra help with accuracy. Experts say working in daylight causes the least eyestrain As there is no pattern stamped onto the fabric, counting the threads is essential. Count, count and recount helps to constantly check for accuracy. The right side and the wrong side of the embroidered piece needs to look as neat. Don t rush the project. Hardanger embroidery is not a massed produced textile product. It is only created by the painstaking needlework of an individual, which therefore makes each Hardanger piece truly unique. 9 THE CORNER LIBRARY This and That (We are always interested in members submitting articles on books they have read or movies or plays they have seen. ) -By Trudi Johnson-Richardson Reprise is a 2006 Norwegian film about friendship, madness and creativity, love and sorrow, great ambitions and the unpleasant discrepancy between hope and reality. The two 23 year olds, Erik and Phillip, are dreaming of becoming successful writers. When they both try to get a manuscript published, Erik s is rejected. Phillip, on the other hand, gets his manuscript accepted and overnight he goes on to become a star of the Norwegian literary scene. Phillip meets Kari, with whom he falls in love. Six months later, Erik and his friends pick up Phillip at a psychiatric hospital to bring him home after a long treatment. Erik still has not given up his dream, but Phillip is not able to write anymore although his friend encourages him to make a new effort. Instead Phillip tries to get his ruined relationship with Kari to start from the beginning again. Reprise is rated R and was released on May 16, The dialogue is in Norwegian with English subtitles. The country of origin is Norway and Sweden. It is the first feature-length film directed by Joachim Trier. The script was written over a period of five years together with Eskil Vogt. The leading roles are played by Anders Danielsen Lie, Espen Klouman-Hoiner and Viktoria Winge. The film was the Norwegian candidate for the Oscar as best foreign language film in This film was shown outside of competition at 2007 Sundance Film Festival. The film is 105 minutes and was distributed by Spelling Films and Maverick Films. Joachim Trier crams a world of ideas about identity, friendship, home and suffering into this tight controlled film. You need as much faith in your audience as in yourself to make a film like this. Mr. Trier knows that this story has been told before boy meets girl, falls in love and that what matters is how those parts are arranged. Mr. Trier and Mr. Vogt are as in touch with their inner adolescents as any young American filmmakers. Its jokes are sharp and well-delivered. The Sons of Norway Lending Library has a number of DVD and VHS movies available for members. You can culture@sofn.com or call or A DVD or VHS is sent to you at no charge and a return envelope is included for your use. SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue , Page 9 Sharing He ordered one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink. The old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them kept looking over and whispering. You could tell they were thinking, 'That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.' As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table. He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple.. The old man said they were just fine - They were used to sharing everything. The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said 'No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.' As the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked 'What is it you're waiting for?' She replied, The teeth. Why not consider an ad in our newsletter? The cost is $10 / issue, or $100 / year. Contact synnove1@q.com.
