1 SynNor Brevet Published monthly by Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge #1-008 WEB SITE: District 1 Family Lodge of the Year 2006, 2008 November 2013 Number 13:10 You Own How Many Norwegian Sweaters? Karen Weiberg, former owner of Three Kittens Yarn Shoppe will unravel some fun information about the tradition of Norwegian hand knitting designs, techniques and colors and a few storiestrue or legend? Join us at our November Lodge Meeting for this informative program, at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 12 at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church on Arcade Street in St. Paul. For many of us, our trip to Norway includes finding the perfect Norwegian sweater for ourselves and/or our entire family. Or maybe our Norwegian sweater is what tells others around us we have Norwegian heritage or you wear it often because it keeps you warm. And you had better love it, because it never wears out! Oh maybe around the cuffs, but that can be fixed. Bring a sweater to the meeting and we will discuss the regional variety of patterns and colors. You can share if there is a story about your sweater. After all, it is now sweater weather! Torsk and Meatball Dinner Enjoyed by All! While the figures for the dinner itself are not yet in, the Silent Auction yielded more than $450, the bake sale $195, and the food sale (leftover lefse from Festival of Nations) another $75. Attending were 115 adults, one 7 year old, and 3 little trolls. (One of which is pictured to the left of this article!) We thank all those who donated items or who participated in this dinner. A full list will appear next month. There was also $58.20 from sales of closet items by Ron Stow. Mange Tak to the members that prepared and served food, donated silent auction or bake sale items and helped with clean-up! Anna Mutchler enjoying her Lefse!

2 Scandinavian Culture and News Halloween Takes Off in Norway At the end of the month of October, many people around the world celebrate Halloween. The term Halloween is a contraction of All Hallows Evening, referring to the evening before All Saints Day on November 1st and All Souls Day on November 2nd; a time dedicated to honoring the saints and remembering the recently departed. The term Halloween is thought to be of Christian origin, dating back to 1745, but today s customs are probably a result of the influence of folk beliefs from Celtic speaking countries. As recently as 10 to 15 years ago, according to Views and News of Norway, Halloween was fairly unknown in Norway. Today, it has turned into big business for the retail community and the Norwegians have created their own version of trick or treat (knask eller knep.) Costumed children now go door to door seeking candy and costume parties are held. Apparently, the Norwegians do not stop celebrating on October 31st. If it falls near a weekend, trick or treating can go on for several days. Although the observance of Halloween may be a relatively recent trend, it is catching on in Norway. Last year, they were sold out of pumpkins in Oslo by October 31st. by Judy Stanke A Burial Tradition in Norway A recent article in the Wall Street Journal, October 10, 2013, described the Norwegian common practice of reusing graves after 20 years. Norwegians get free cemetery plots when they die, but only for 20 years. After that, somebody s got to pay rent to keep the plot and headstone. Otherwise, the plot becomes available to bury somebody else. The remains of the previous burial are left in place underneath the new coffin. However, this has begun to present a problem. At one time, there was a practice of wrapping the dead in plastic before being buried in wooden caskets. This was done because of the belief at the time that it would be more sanitary. The problem is that the airtight conditions actually prevented decomposition. So now, when attempting to re-use grave plots, if there is a plastic burial underneath, the plot cannot be reused, according to law. Margaret Eckbo, Oslo s director of funerals and former city councilwoman, came up with a solution. Since expanding cemeteries was not an option, she worked together with cemetery worker, Kjell Ostbye to create a process by which holes are made into the ground and through the plastic, after which a lime based mixture is injected into the underground corpse, hastening decomposition. This solution has been found to be quick, inexpensive and practical. The use of plastic was obviously a mistake, but a good solution to the problem has been found, making for numerous currently available burial plots! 3 Lodge News Fra Presidenten At our last meeting, our Foundation representative, Cindy Olson, gave us so many examples of the wonderful things the Foundation does for our fellow lodge members across the country and also some benefits to our own members. Unfortunately, I forgot to "Pass the Piggy" in support of the Foundation and I apologize for that. So, the "Piggy" will be passed at our next lodge meeting. Please be generous. I'd very much like to find out how many of our members are working on any cultural skills or sports medals. This is also an important part of our lodge membership. My is unicorn670@comcast.net and I'd love to hear from you. Kathy FOUNDATION MONTH At our October meeting, Cindy Olson, the Foundation Director for Sons of Norway, talked to us about how the Foundation uses its funds to help lodges and lodge members. Synnove-Nordkap and our members have benefited often in past years. In February, 2013, we received a grant for our Landmark Exhibit. Our Junior Lodge has received money for fabric for their outfits and also to help with the cost of their bus trip to Stoughton, WI. for Syttende Mai in Three of our members have received college scholarships; Clair Keller this year, Lauren Pearson last year, and Mariel Blomstrand several years ago, to study in Norway. Now it is our turn to give something back to the Foundation. We will be taking a collection at our November meeting for this purpose. We will also have a drawing for a painting of a Viking ship. For every $25.00 donated to the Foundation, your name will be entered for a chance to win the painting. Please be generous! Calendars can still be purchased at our November meeting. Cost is $12.50, payable at time of ordering. Delivery will be at our December meeting. We are still in need of 2 more bell ringers for the Salvation Army on Saturday, December 7, at Byerlys. 1 person is needed for the 3:00-5:00 shift. And 1 person for the 5:00-6:00 shift. December, and the Julebord are fast approaching! Start thinking about what you will bring to share and sign up for that at our November meeting: appetizers, salads/vegetables, main course or dessert. Sunshine News Our sympathy to Eileen Zimmerman on the death of her husband, Dallas. He was a 22 year member of our Lodge, served on the finance committee, and was a faithful lefse butterer at the Festival of Nations. Best wishes to to Kathy Manderscheid as she recovers from surgery. HELP US KEEP TRACK OF OUR MEMBERS! Mary Beth Mutchler is our sunshine person. If you know of someone who is sick, had surgery, etc., please call her at or her at mbe43@q.com and she will send a card from the lodge. Also, if your phone, , or address change, please let us know or dmutchler@q.com. - Thanks! SynNorBrevet, Synnove-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 3

4 Lodge News Board Meeting Minutes, October 1, 2013 Attendees: Kathy Stevens, Ron and Susan Stow, Trudi Johnson-Richards, Linda Holmstrom, Kathy Manderscheid, Laura Sherman, Sharon Amann, Mary Beth and Dave Mutchler. We reviewed the September meeting, our first at Gustavus Adolphus. It went well, with rave reviews of the kitchen and Luther Hall. The meeting got a bit long due to the many pictures shown. Perhaps we could have served the treats earlier, or even concurrently. We postponed the discussion on camp scholarships, hoping that MAF would attend but was delayed. Laura noted the significant weight of our old Treasurer s briefcase. Could we get one with wheels? Dave will look into it, beginning at OfficeMax. She also would like a lodge stamp for endorsing deposited checks. Another item for our Corporate discount. Susan Stow referred us to the Junior Lodge report in the Brevet, and indicated that the kids wish to dance at one of our meetings. The consensus was that the Membership Dinner in April would be the best time. Mollie Spillman will attend our October meeting. We have not sufficiently shown our gratitude to her for the great job she did with the museum display at Landmark Center from February through June. After discussion, Linda will get a $200 Visa or Master Card, and Ron and Susan will prepare a card and certificate to be presented by Ron to Mollie at the meeting. We discussed the Middel-Lag again. There is not enough coordination with the Senior lodge and with potential members. Dave will send a list of the new candidates to Jana and Sophie. Kathy Mandersheid came with lots of information on camp scholarships, and some good questions. We need to be clear to the applying families that they need to make their registrations themselves and send payment to the camp, but should subtract any district or lodge scholarships from what they pay. The cut-off date for our own scholarships to camp will be changed to February 15. Bob Lysak is set for the October program on Northern Lights. Dave will come early to help him set up. Sharon discussed the Torsk and Meatball Dinner preparations. She needs more folks to sign up at the meeting. There are 6 food carts, which will be used to collect dirty dishes. Each table needs a member designated as a server/helper/cleaner. The closet at GA still needs organizing. Those who use it are best; we ll ask for volunteers at the meeting. Susan has heard that the Stoughton dancers may be in St. Paul in January. If so, it s very unusual. She will look into it. We discussed our slate of officers for To date, only Sharon Kalmes is resigning. Kathy Manderscheid gratiously volunteered to be the Foundation Director as well as Scholarships. Kathy has Golden Membership awards for Patricia Luther and Jerry Stanke. Volunteers are still needed for Bell Ringing at Byerly s on 12/7 from 11-1, 1-3, and 3-5, + one more for 5-6. We discussed programs for next year s meetings. Possibilities include some music to aid singing carols at the Julebord., Ski for Light (January?), Clyde Doepner, Minnesota Twins Curator (March?), the Junior Dancers for the Membership Dinner in April, and something for the Syttende Mai bi-centennial celebration in May (Commonweal Theater?). MAF has made a generous donation to our camp scholarship fund and made an appeal for increasing the amount of our awards. We went back to this topic at the end as time allowed. Submitted by: Dave Mutchler, Secretary The next board of directors meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 5 at the Mutchler s, as it is election night and the usual meeting sites are not available. Lodge Meeting Minutes October 8, lodge members and guests attended our second meeting at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. We began promptly at 7:00 as President Kathy Stevens welcomed everyone and asked if there were any guests. Emily Wallace was our only guest except for Mollie Spillman, Curator/Archivist at Landmark Center, and Bob Lysak, our speaker. Treasurer Laura Sherman gave a brief Treasurer s report. Ron Stow presented a Norwegian book as a gift from Wyonne Maack Long, who was the tour guide for the recent Norway trip our lodge sponsored. Ron also presented an award to Mollie Spillman for her support of our museum exhibit at Landmark Center. Cindy Olson, Foundation Director for Sons of Norway, gave a PowerPoint presentation on what the Foundation does and what it has meant to our lodge personally. Sheryl Hove gave us a brief language lesson. Sharon Amann put in a plug for the Torsk and Meatball Dinner coming up on October 26, and Dave Mutchler did the same for the accompanying Silent Auction and Bake Sale. We enjoyed a very interesting program on the Aurora Borealis given by Professor Bob Lysak of the U of M. We thank Chuck and Jean Draheim, Joanne Englund, and Kathy Kaluza for the tasty treats. Mange takk! Submitted by Dave Mutchler, Secretary SynNorBrevet, Synnove-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 4

Jorun and I have remained friends all these years. For one of our all-school reunions, Jo (as we called her) came "home" to walk in the parade, wearing her bunad. Very special, indeed. MEET OUR MEMBERS When you arrive at the monthly lodge event for Synnøve-Nordkap, you are greeted at the door by two smiles which belong to Shirley Brekke and Maureen Austinson. They make you feel at home as they welcome you to join in on the meeting, the program and the refreshments. Shirley has been a member since 1992, when she was invited by the Kolstads to join the fun. Being a full-blooded Norwegian, it was an easy step for her. She has enjoyed everything about the lodge, especially the super people she has met there. Besides being a greeter, Shirley has been a willing helper, providing refreshments, baking for Festival of Nations, and serving at the Torsk and Meatball dinner. Shirley has also volunteered her services at the Lyngblomsten center and in the gift shop at the Landmark Center in St. Paul. Shirley enjoys playing the piano, knitting, swimming and cooking. Her favorite time is when she is with her grandchildren. Maureen Austinson joined Synnøve-Nordkap 12 years ago, when she was encouraged by her aunt, who was active in the lodge. She is proud of her Norwegian heritage, having two Norwegian grandpas. Among the things that Maureen likes about the lodge are the wonderful programs, especially those which include music. She had a wonderful time traveling to Stoughton Wisconsin to watch our Peer Gynt Dancers, along with the Stoughton Norwegian Dancers, perform for Syttende Mai. As a regular at lodge meetings, it was easy for her to volunteer to be greeter. Maureen also served a term as financial secretary. Like Shirley, Maureen also volunteers at the Landmark Center. I keep busy says Maureen. She enjoys knitting and bowling. As a member in a couple of book clubs, she likes to read mysteries. Maureen admits to having fifty books on a table near her bed. Being neighbors, Maureen picks up Shirley, and drives her to lodge events. Together, they make a valuable contribution to the success of Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge. 7 Lodge News Junior Lodge Update Hode, Skulder, Kne og Ta, Kne og Ta (Head, shoulders, knee and toe, knee and toe), an action song, was taught by Lene Erickson, a Norwegian exchange student from Bergen who is studying at Forest Lake High School until next June. Our Peer Gynt Dancers asked questions about her school in Norway, if she has a bunad, what sports are popular, if she has traveled out of Norway before coming to the U.S., and her family. Lene had a computer generated photo album to share. Special thanks to the Hovlands for setting up Lene s visit and to the Westons and Hovlands for bringing refreshments. This year I will ask our most experienced dancers to take a turn leading the review of one of our familiar dances, so that we keep our choreography in mind for an entire program. Mae Hovland started us off with a review of one of our Winter Carnival Parade line dances, Tre Klappdans på Rekkje. Guests at the October meeting were Freya Haugen, Monica Clarke and Alicia Regino. We loved having them visit and look forward to having them join us in November. Our new dance this month was Åttepardansen, or eight couples dancing. Basically, the group is in a square by couples, dancing to the center or other side with their partner. The real challenge is the grand right and left maneuver. First each dancer proceeds in the direction their right hand is pointing. We counted på Norsk to åtte, then pivoted around that eighth person to change direction going back to our original partners. Tricky, however they accomplished it by the end of rehearsal. Hurra for dere! While all this twirling around was happening, a group of mother s was intently knitting Selbu Votten, Norwegian mittens. Sasha Aslanian was coaching the knitters as questions arose. Any knitters from senior lodge who would like to join in are most welcome. Our goal is to have as many Norwegian votten for the Winter Carnival participants as possible. 8 Benefit News How to Protect Your Parents Intense marketing too often crosses the line into fraud, seniors can be ripped off via fraudulent telephone solicitations, with offers of mortgage help to avoid foreclosure and at free-lunch investing seminars. According to a MetLife Mature Market Institute survey of reported swindles, 51% of the scammers were strangers, but 34% were family, friends or neighbors. Here s what you can do. Tell them you want to help by going through their mail and monitor their accounts for unusual activity. Help them get copies of their credit reports at to make sure they aren t victims of identity theft. Put them on do-not-call lists. Offer to help develop a spending plan (don t call it a budget). This will give you a chance to see how much money is coming in and how much they re spending it. Warn them about free-lunch seminars at which they could fall prey to a high-pressure sales presentation. For more information schedule a complementary Sons of Norway financial review. 9 Corner Library By Trudi Johnson-Richards The Corner Library moved from First Lutheran Church to Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. Books, DVD s and CD s were available at the first program meeting on September 10, 2013 at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. A few cookbooks were found hidden in the closet at First Lutheran. Sign out a cookbook and prepare a favorite recipe. Most Americans think of smorgasbord as an appetizing array of salads, cold meats, fish and game, cheese, pickle relishes, smoked seafood and other delectables. In centuries past, Norwegian food tradition was not very exciting, as the people from necessity, learned to preserve, store, eat and appreciate whatever foods were available to them. The daily food of the Vikings was simple, yet nourishing and healthful. Their bread was whole-grain, mostly rye. Graut-grot (porridge) was made from barley and rye. As time progressed, many different types of porridge came into use such as smorgrot and rommegrot (butter and sour cream porridge) and to this day is one of the most commonly used national dishes. The grain was ground at the mill. White flour was used mostly for special treats. Flour was sifted before using, not to make it airy, but to remove impurities some of them alive. The Vikings mainstay was fish; especially herring, and they excelled in curing and preserving fish and meat. They brewed their own beer and made their own cheese and butter. Other than cabbage and onions, very few vegetables were available. Fruits and vegetables were dried or pickled for winter use; meats were preserved by the use of brine and by drying and smoking. Today the picture has changed. Norwegian delacacies are exported all over the world. Recipes are included for Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. At the Synnøve-Nordkap October event, the lodge was presented with a Norwegian book as a gift from Wyonne Maack Long, who was the tour guide for the trip which 15 of our lodge members took to Norway in August. The book is the first in a series of 64 novels entitled "Sønnavind" (southerly wind) by author Frid Ingulstad. The series describes the lives of workers in the Norwegian town of Akerselva in the year In this first book, "Gullnålen" (golden needle), we meet eighteen-year-old Hilda, who is working in the local weaving factory. When her mother becomes ill and is bed-ridden, Hilda and her younger sister must take care of the rest of the family, since their father spends most of his time at the local saloon. Wyonne will be involved in the translation of this book into English. We will look forward to reading it when it becomes available. SynNorBrevet, Synnøve-Nordkap Lodge, Issue Page 9
