1 October 2014 Regifting the Good News Ellen P. Have you ever given someone a gift that you received as a gift? If so, you already know about regifting. You might choose to regift something you received if you: - Already have something very similar; - Don t personally like it, but think someone else will; - Have no use for it; or - Run out of time/money to buy a gift. Regardless of why you regift something, once you give it to someone else, it s too late to keep it for yourself. This isn t true of regifting the Good News, however. In fact, I d argue the exact opposite. After receiving the gift of God s Grace by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can pass that gift along to as many people as you like. The Holy Spirit will keep using your body as a temple whether you share the Good News with one person or seven billion people. There s enough of Him to go around. God s Holy Spirit will even keep hanging out with you if you choose to tell nobody about Him. I doubt that ll put as big of a smile on God s face as it would if you tell as many people as possible, but He won t hold it against you. God may, however, keep reminding you that His Grace is the gift that keeps on giving. Several products have made that claim since it was first used in 1925, but all wear-out eventually. Not true with the Grace of God, though. When a person accepts the atonement provided by Jesus Christ s Death and Resurrection, they can rely on God s Grace to guide and support them through the rest of their earthly life. Telling others about His Saving Grace will make their life and yours more meaningful, fulfilling, and satisfying. BTW: The 3 rd Thursday of December was declared National Regifting Day a few years ago. To learn more about regifting, Glorifying God at the Gym Gym Space, LLC, is a new indoor athletic facility in Waukee. Although intended primarily for sports practices, WUMC is using Gym Space as an outreach ministry location. Everyone in our church family is encouraged to attend Church Family Gym Night on the first Wednesday of each month, from 6:30 8 p.m. Even better, you can bring a guest who d benefit from some Christian fun and fellowship. This is one way you can help enhance our ministry to residents on the west side of Des Moines. Our WUMC youth groups will make good use of this space on the other Wednesdays. If you aren t into playing baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, or football, come cheer-on those who play and enjoy the fellowship. You could also help support this ministry by sponsoring all or part of a Wednesday evening. For $250 you can sponsor a full evening, or you can give $50 to pay for part of an evening. Stop by the easel in our Fellowship Hall and add your name to the date(s) of your choice. Thanks for helping our WUMC youth ministry grow and for helping make WUMC an externally focused church. Please stop by the table in the fellowship area to see what they ve previewed. Some of the studies have a DVD component, others don t. Some focus on the New Testament. If your group wants some more topical, such as current events, there are options. If you have questions about faith, there are a couple of choices on that as well. Your small group isn t limited to the curriculum shown on the table. You ve learned how to be externally focused, but have you identified your spiritual gifts or passions? If not, completing a Network class will help you discover them. You re invited to join others in our church family for a one-day Network session on Saturday, Oct. 25. Class will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end about 4:30. The cost is $10, which includes lunch and a book; each participant must have their own book. The last day to sign-up is Sunday, Oct. 12. You ll need to have three people (spouse, friend, family member) complete an assessment about what they see as your strengths. These will need to be completed prior to class. 2
3 Pastor Appreciation Sunday Our Member Care Team would like to celebrate Pastor Appreciation Sunday by having our Church family write notes or bring cards to church on October 12. We ll have a card box in the Fellowship Area and some special goodies to help honor Pastor Jamie s outstanding service. Carpenter s Club, Oct. 1 Carpenter s Club, a micro business involving our youth grades 9-12, is off and running. Our next meeting will be Oct. 1, 6:30-8:00 at the parsonage. We ll be producing Burning Bush Fire Starters and walnut coasters. Our youth will continue their work at 9 a.m. each Saturday in October, at the parsonage. Parents and Adults: Please support Cyndi Craigmile with this effort; she needs some people to help on Oct. 1. Come join the fun. Questions? 4 Grilled Cheese Food Truck Our WUMC staff issued a steep challenge to us on Rally Day. Get 20+ additional people to sign-up for a small group by the end of 11:00 celebration. Well -- we rose to the challenge and exceeded it by the end of our 9:30 celebration. Therefore, the staff has arranged to have a fantastic grilled cheese food truck known as Melts Without Borders at WUMC on Oct. 19, 9 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. Be sure to come to church hungry that morning and be ready to belly-up to the window for a toasty, melty (yes that's a word) sandwich made just for you. A good will offering will be taken for our Missions Team to help fund the solar freezers and shipping/freight charges. Let's make this an event to remember. Treat Our Family Meal Please join your church family for our annual CFM Treat our Family Meal on Sunday, Oct. 5. Let our church family Ministries team treat you to food and fellowship, in appreciation for your participation this past year. The Girl s Still Got It Study Group Our Thursday evening women s study group will meet at WUMC at 7:00 on Oct. 2, to study Chapter 2 of Liz Curtis Higgs book about Ruth. We ll be reading about Ruth, Orpah, and Naomi and the decision to go back home to Bethlehem. What do you think Liz Curtis Higgs is going to be telling us next!? Third Thursday Lunch Bunch The next time the third Thursday of the month rolls around (specifically, the 16th of October) and it s time for lunch (specifically, 11:30), come on over to the south party room at the Pizza Ranch and enjoy a meal with members of our church family. There s always room for another chair around the table. New Member Sunday, Oct. 19 We ll be having a New Member Sunday during all three celebrations on Oct. 19. If you re interested in becoming a WUMC member, please see Jacqueline Conley, Assimilation Coordinator, or contact her (jacqueline@waukeechurch.org, ). She ll help make the necessary arrangements for you to faithfully and spiritually begin your journey into our church family. October Food Pantry Needs The Waukee Area Christian Services food pantry is in-need of pizza mix, pizza sauce, and 100% fruit juice this month. Trunk or Treats Dig-out your best costume, dress-up your trunk, and help hand-out goodies for Trunk or Treats on Sunday, Oct. 26. You can start setting up your trunk at 3:30, with trunk or treating beginning at 4. We ll have prizes for the best-decorated trunk as well as the best costumed ADULT. That's right, folks, it s not just for the kids. New this year, the youth will be holding a free will offering spaghetti supper starting at 5. Noah s AARP Plans are being made for our group to go to Waukee Area Christian Services to volunteer one evening (possibly Monday, Nov. 3) at the food pantry. Waukee Area Christian Services is housed at the Westview Church, located on the NE corner of Boone Drive and University, across from Casey s. Our church supports the food pantry there by our donations, but helping hands are always appreciated as well. The work isn t difficult, so do plan on participating in an evening of fellowship and volunteering. Watch for more details about this evening of sharing. Kids of God K.O.G. Did you know our two elementary youth groups (J.A.M. and SonBeams) are now meeting together. The youth chose the name Kids of God (K.O.G.) for themselves. 4
5 Love Your Neighbor As Yourself Bidwell Riverside Center is a National Mission Institution of the Women's Division of the United Methodist Church. It s supported in-part by United Way and the Principal Group Foundation, and depends on donations from local churches. Current and immediate needs include: good used clothing, shoes, toys, and various household items (sheets, blankets, towels, dishes, etc.). Each month some people must be turned away due to a shortage of these items. Bidwell also needs personal hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and toothpaste. Many of us take these items for granted, but if someone has to choose between home, food, and these personal items, it s easy to guess which items don t get purchased. If you have large plastic bags (bigger than the average grocery bag), please donate those, too. Bidwell uses them to bag larger items. To donate items at church, please write Bidwell on them and put them in the cupboard just inside the front door. The cupboard door is marked Bidwell. If you prefer to take your donation directly to Bidwell, they are located at 1203 Hartford (Des Moines) and are open Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30. Bidwell also needs more volunteers. If you d like to donate some of your time, please contact Barb or Bob Rhinehart (omabarb@aol.com or call ). Your donation and/or time will be greatly appreciated. Fall Book Talk The fall Book Talk will be at 7:00 on Monday, Nov. 17, in Ann and Greg Ruble s home. We ll be discussing And the Mountains Echoed, the newest best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini. A reviewer writes that this story moves through war, separation, birth, death, deceit, and love, illustrating again and again how people s actions, even selfless ones, are shrouded in ambiguity. He describes it as a master work by a master storyteller. You re invited to read the book, share your thoughts with the group in November, and, of course, stay for dessert. Happy reading. Save the Date, Ladies We re planning a women s Christmas luncheon for Saturday, Dec. 13 at 11:30. Watch for more details, coming soon. Acquire the Fire 2015 Mark your calendars now for February 27 - March 1, WUMC youth will be attending ATF in Des Moines this year. The weekend will include staying at a local hotel on Friday and Saturday nights and some fun activities in the area. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details. If you d like to learn more about becoming more energy efficient in your home, and being a better steward of the earth, there s a program for that. Trinity and Aldersgate UMCs are co-hosting the event at Urbandale United Church of Christ on Saturday, Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. - noon. The cost is $25 and you must register online (iowaipl.org) prior to attending. For more information, get a brochure from the C.C. or contact Sarah at programs@iowaipl.org. Keep It Social...
