1 May 2015 Strength for the Day This is Easter, people! And we are Easter People! The Easter Season, also known as the Great Fifty Days, begins at Sunset on Easter Eve and continues through the Day of Pentecost. This is the most joyous and celebrative season of the Christian calendar year. Together we focus not only on Christ s resurrection, but also on his ascension and on the giving of the Holy Spirit, on the first Easter and on the Day of Pentecost. Think of it, friends. The spirit of the Risen Christ living within us. Christ in me as Paul wrote. But, as James Stewart in A Man in Christ writes, Christ in me means something quite different from the weight of an impossible ideal, something far more glorious than the oppression of a pattern forever beyond all imitation. Christ in me means Christ bearing me along from within, Christ the motive-power that carries me on, Christ giving my whole life a wonderful poise and lift, and turning every burden into wings. To be in Christ, to have Christ within, to realize your creed not as something you have to bear but as something by which you are borne, this is Christianity. It is more: it is release and liberty, life with an endless song at its heart. It means, feeling within you, as long as life here lasts, the carrying power of Love Almighty; and underneath you, when you come to die, the touch of everlasting arms. As spring continues to manifest itself in ever greener expressions of new life, may we all give thanks for the new and eternal life --- and the power for living --- that is within us because of Jesus Christ! Very Basic Service Editor Ellen When I was a kid, VBS meant Vacation Bible School, a chance to escape my older brothers harassment for one week each summer. It was also a time to learn about God, something more important than anything I was learning in school. Now that I m old(er), VBS looks more like a way to do some Very Basic Service for God. Our Missions Team does a great job recruiting WUMCers to help with more traditional service opportunities but what about VBS? Could it be any easier to serve God? Our D- Team does the VBS planning and coordinating. Volunteers serve at WUMC, which is close to home. Each Follower of Christ has some time, talent, and/or treasure to share. The time invested provides a way to share the Good News with the next generation. And...given that kids will be kids, adult volunteers are likely to experience some much-needed spiritual growth and rejuvenation. What can I say? VBS is a win for all involved. Please mark July (Su-Th), 6:00-8:15 p.m. on your calendars now. That s when all children (ages pre-k through 5 th grade) are invited to experience God s Love in Action at WUMC. VBSers will learn how to fuel-up and what it means to have deep faith in God. Summer Celebration Times WUMC will have Sunday celebrations at 8:15 and 9:30 this summer, with no Sunday School this summer. The new service times begin May 31 and will continue through Aug. 30.

The spring Book Talk group will meet 7:00 Monday, May 18, at Ann and Greg Ruble s home (4 Sugar Creek Lane). We'll be discussing the book, Triumph Over Destiny by Peladija Woodson-Diers, an author from Oelwein, Iowa. More information about the author and how her book was written is provided at triumphoverdestiny.com. 4 th of July Parade Planners We need some folks to plan our WUMC entry in Waukee s 4th of July parade. If you re interested in helping, please call the office, talk to Deanne, or sign-up at the C.C. Thank you for your help and ideas to make this our best 4 th of July outreach event to-date. Lunch Bunch The Third Thursday Lunch Bunch group will meet in one of the Pizza Ranch party rooms May 21 at 11:30. You re invited to gather around the table to enjoy the food and fellowship with members of our church family on the 21st. It s always a fun time. Noah s AARP Plans are being made for a tour of Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines for the afternoon of Sat., May 30. Watch for details in the Waukee Wire and on the C.C. Trinity UMC Supper Club Our church family has the privilege of serving a meal at Trinity UMC again on Monday, May 11. Sign-up sheets for food donations and servers needed are at the C.C. All servers are now required to fill-out a screening form, available from Maureen Briles. She can also answer any questions you may have about this change. Summer Mission Dinners Our Summer Mission Dinners are a fun way to share good food, good fellowship, and raise money for our Annual Mission Project. If you re interested in hosting one of these dinners, please see Deanne or call the office. Stay tuned for dates, times, locations, and the announcement of the Mission Project so you can book your reservation for a great evening. Serving-Up Summer: - KoG and UMYF We re planning some activities to get our KoG and UMYF groups together, serving our community and WUMC. You re invited to be part of our Summer of Service events as we make the most of summer break by showing God s love in action. Potential serving opportunities for the summer months include helping at the food pantry/garden, Meals from the Heartland, and serving a meal at Trinity UMC. If you re interested in participating, please let Kim Magee know. Thanksgiving Ingathering November may seem like a long time from now, but we need to make lots of bags in preparation for this ingathering ministry. Our quilting team has cut-out 100+ school bags, which now need to be sewn. If you can help complete some bags, please pick up a kit(s) at the C.C. Each kit contains four school bags, along with instructions. Remember to sign-out the number of the kit(s) you take, sew them, and return them to the C.C. 3

4 Honoring Our Seniors We ll be honoring our graduating seniors at all three celebrations on May 30. So far, we know the following WUMCers are graduating from high school this spring: Maddie Allen Sophie Erickson Matthew Graham Kaitlyn Soughan Maegan Tyrrell Nathan Wanned If there s a senior we ve overlooked, please notify someone in the church office as soon as possible. SENIORS: Please let someone in the church office know which celebration you d like to be recognized at on May 3. Thursday Night Small Group The Thursday Night Study group will meet at WUMC, May 7 at 7:00. We ll be studying chapters 11 and 12 of The Girl s Still Got It by Liz Curtis Higgs, finishing Ruth and Boaz s love story. Hope to see you there. The Waukee Area Christian Food Pantry would particularly appreciate donations of cereal, pancake mix and syrup, peanut butter and jelly this month. Graduation Open Houses As our church family, please join us in celebrating Kaitlyn s graduation from Waukee High School at an open house on Sat., May 16, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Waukee Community Center, just south of WUMC. There will be a light pasta bar and snacks. (The Soughan Family) All WUMCers are invited to join us in celebrating Nathan Wanned s graduation. The open house will be held in the church basement from 2 4 on Sun. May 17.
