2 From the Minister 2 We have a tree that is growing in the Parish Hall. It s not a real tree - it s made of construction paper, but each week it grows with the addition of a few more beautifully-colored leaves, each with a few words written on them. Our Tree of Joy was put up by our Deacons. In worship on October 18, they challenged us all to look at where our faith is bringing us joy, both in our lives and here at church. Our children led the way with each putting up a leaf given to them during the Children s Message. But it looks like all ages have responded, so that now our tree s leaves are spreading on the walls on either side. Some of the messages are very faith oriented - prayer, love, beauty, forgiveness. Some are comments on the joy found in God s creation - autumn, sunshine, family hikes. Some express the joy found in family with individual names of children, parents and grandchildren. Some mention pets or any of God s creatures. Some remind us of the joy of music through playing guitar, enjoying our handbell choir or the joy given by our adult choir. A few of the responses are very specific - I am joyful for all my friends who help me; Sitting with my friends and passing the peace with my neighbors; and I am so happy to find a nurturing church. And yes, our church does find joy in good food! Several of the leaves mention food - church dinners, coffee hour goodies, and having a pumpkin-spiced coffee. All of these joys will help us to see how our faith has filled us with goodness. All of these joys will help us to see how our faith has given us true happiness even when life may give us challenges. All of these joys will help us to see the depth of what our church means to each of us and the hope that God gives us for the future of our church. All of these joys will be at the heart of our giving thanks on Thanksgiving Sunday on November 22. While our children are baking pumpkin breads for our home-bound folks, we will be giving thanks through the dedication of our financial pledges for As we look at what we are able to give financially to our church, may we all remember the joy that it brings to us, to our community and to those whom we reach around the world. It will be a joy to give back to God s church a portion of the abundance that God has given us. One of my favorite hymns that we sing this time of year begins, Now thank we all our God, with hearts and hands and voices It is a lovely reminder that we need to thank God with our words, with our faith and especially with our hands working to help those in need. When we joyfully give of our finances we are thanking God by sustaining the good work that this church does reaching out to others. It is a joy to support our church!

3 3 Midnight Run to New Haven: Monday, November 16 Join the group that gathers in our kitchen in the late afternoon to make sandwiches and pack sack meals to take down to the Green in New Haven. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Karen Gagliardi. Seasonal items such as blankets, socks, shoes, t-shirts, etc. Toiletries of any size are always welcome. There is a greater need for men s items. Please bring your donations to the Parish Hall. Eddy House Dinner: Thanksgiving, November 26 We will be bringing a hot meal to the Eddy House Homeless Shelter in Middletown on Thanksgiving day. Come to our kitchen at 9 am 11:30 am to join in the cooking fun. This mission opportunity is open to everyone. If you have questions, please call Paulie Lally at First Monday Bible Study Monday, November 2 at 7 p.m. On the first Monday of each month we will gather to look at what scriptures are scheduled for the next several Sundays. This is a great way to get a sneak preview of what to expect in church. We will generate some thoughtful discussion on what these passages say to each of us, and there will be good fellowship and refreshments. Put First Monday Bible Study on your calendar for each month. Newcomers are always welcome! Play Group Is Back! Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon All children age 5 and under, along with their parents or caregivers, are invited to our Parish Hall every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon. We welcome the littlest members of our community to come play with each other along with Moms, Dads, Grandparents or Caregivers. The Parish Hall will be baby-proofed and full of toys providing a free, safe, healthy and non-plugged-in opportunity to play. Playtime will be unstructured and folks can come and go as their children s schedules allow. This program is offered to our entire community so spread the word and come play with us! Thanksgiving Interfaith Service Sunday, November 22 at 4 p.m. This year the multi-faith service of Thanksgiving, sponsored by the Valley Shore Clergy, will take place at Congregation Beth Shalom in Chester. Many of the local clergy will be participating along with a combined choir of members from several congregations. If you are interested in singing in the choir, contact Becky Blomgren to get the music. Last year this beautiful service was at our church and attracted a large crowd. Rev. Martha will be participating again. The service will be followed by a reception. Come, let us worship together. The Killingworth Lions Club will hold their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive on Saturday, November 14th and 21st and their annual Christmas Food Drive on Saturday, December 5th and 12th at the town compactor site from 8:00 am to Noon. Donations of food, food gift cards, and cash are needed and will be greatly appreciated. All items collected will be turned over to Helping Hands of Killingworth for distribution in the community. Please remember your neighbors in need during the holidays.

4 4 Children s Collection for Children! Winter Outerwear and Breakfast Food for SSKP Our Sunday School children are collecting items for the Clinton food pantry. Their hope is that every child can begin the day with warm clothes and a good breakfast. Warm coats, hats, mittens, and boots can be new or gently worn, children s sizes only. Let s fill those boxes so we can take them with us when we work at the food pantry on November 18! Sunday, November 1 All Saints Day Celebration: Honoring our 30+ Year Members During the worship service on Sunday, November 1, we will be honoring those who have been members of our church for thirty years or more. Invitations will be sent out and we will have a special reception after church in their honor prepared by the Deacons. If you need a ride to church or if you would be willing to give someone a ride, please call the office. We would love to have all of our long-time members in attendance so we may say thank-you! Fall Clean-up November 15 after Worship You know all those beautiful leaves that we have enjoyed in multi-colors beginning with the spring green? They aren t quite as beautiful spread across our lawns! Come to church dressed to work and bring your rakes. Cider and donuts will be provided. Mission of the Month: Shoreline Food Pantry in Clinton on November 18 Our church will once again provide the entire staff for the Shoreline Food Pantry located at First Church of Christ, 55 Church Road, Clinton on Wednesday, November 18. We need around 40 people from 5-8 p.m., though you may come for just part if you need to. The Clinton food pantry accommodates the over 150 families who visit it each week. They definitely need our help! A sign-up sheet will be located on the Mission Board in the Parish Hall. This will be the sixth year that our church has been given the honor to fully staff a food pantry. It is one of the highlights of our Mission activities; last year everyone came away feeling so good about our church s participation. School-age children with a parent and adults of all ages are encouraged to help out again this year. Pumpkin Bread Baking and Delivery Sunday, November 22 As their expression of generosity on our Thanksgiving Sunday, November 22, our children will be baking pumpkin bread and delivering it to our home-bound members. If you can help with the delivery of bread, see Christine Link or Deb Fredericksen after church that Sunday. Our church will be overflowing with the delightful smells of pumpkin bread and our hands will be reaching out to remember those folks who cannot make it here every Sunday. Thanksgiving Sunday & Dedication of Pledges Sunday, November 22 It is a tradition at our church to show our gratitude for all that we have received by dedicating our financial pledges of support for 2016 during the worship service on November 22. Pledge cards will be sent out the first week in November; additional cards will be available on the side table. Pledging to the church allows us to responsibly budget for the coming year. Please bring your pledge card with you on November 22 that you might personally put it in the basket to be dedicated. If you are unable to bring your card that Sunday, please send it in to the church. Thank you.

Lend a Hand with Christmas Fair Preparations The Dec. 5 Christmas Fair is fast approaching. There will be a Silent Auction, gifts for sale, Pet Boutique, soups, chance to bid on Christmas tree, children s activities, a visit from Santa, Sugar Plum Shop, and the ever-popular cookie sale. We are asking for your help donating theme baskets. They sell well and are a nice addition to the fair. Would you be able to provide one for us? It involves gathering themed items and arranging them in a basket or other suitable container. Some themes revolve around but aren t limited to: babies, cooking, candy, wine/cheese, children s activities, gluten-free foods, travel games, sports, Christmas items, jellies/jams, and Sudoku/ crossword puzzles (with a BIG eraser :-) We also need your help in donating any old or unused decorations that we could use in making wreaths, etc. If you have any, please drop them off at church. 7 Red poinsettias a tradition in this church for many years will be available through the Flower Committee and will be displayed at the service on Sunday, December 13. The plants in 6-1/2 pots are locally grown and may be designated as memorials or specials. The price is $8.50 per plant. Use the sheet below to order. Every Wednesday at noon, anyone over 60 is invited for a hot meal and good fellowship. There is a suggested donation of $3 and reservations are requested by calling before 11 a.m. the day before to the Estuary Council of Seniors at
