He explains so well what I have experienced about changes in attitude to marriage and sex during my nearly 50 years as a priest. Here are some thoughts for a Sunday when we hear about Christ s presence during the marriage feast at Cana. No generation in history has experienced so much change as we have in the past 60 years. This change is not just in the areas of science, technology, medicine, travel and communications, it is especially in the area of social infrastructure, of communal ethos and perhaps nowhere is this change more radical than the area of how we understand sex. In the past 70 years we have witnessed three major tectonic shifts in how we understand the place of sex in our lives. First, we have moved away from the concept that sex is morally connected to procreation. This started to breakdown 60 years ago. The second severing was more radical. Up to the 1960s, our culture tied sex to marriage. The norm was that the only moral place for sex was inside marriage. Not that this was always respected, but it wasn t morally or religiously accepted or blessed. People had sex outside marriage, but nobody claimed that it was right. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK The sexual revolution of the 1960s severed the link between sex and marriage. Sex, in our cultural understanding, has now become an extension of dating. One of the fruits of that is that more people are living together outside marriage and before marriage, without any sense of moral implication. Sex outside marriage is more the norm than the exception. People today will not even have a moral discussion upon this with either their parents or priests. They say, we don t think like you. They don t. Sex outside its prescribed Christian ground, that of marriage, has not only been held up as the norm. It has been understood and hailed as moral progress, liberation from darkness. I want to state unequivocally that our cultural severing of the non-negotiable tie between sex and marriages is just plain wrong. It is also naive to say it is liberating. Who hasn t been hurt by sex? History is strewn with broken hearts, broken families, broken lives, bitterness, murders and suicides within which sex is the canker Don t be naive about sexual energy; it isn t always as friendly and inconsequential as you think. What do you think about the above? The teachings of the gospel is a challenge to each of us, isn t it? YEAR OF MERCY SCRIPTURE TALKS AT THE OASIS OF PEACE In his recent Pastoral letter, Bishop Philip referred to St Luke as the Evangelist of Mercy. All are welcome to the next monthly Scripture talk on Tuesday 2 February when we shall continue our study of the Gospel of Luke. The talk commences at 2pm. CATHOLIC GRANDPARENTS ASSOCIATION (CGA) On Friday 12 February, Bishop Philip will celebrate a Mass at St John s Cathedral for Grandparents. This is to celebrate the inauguration of the CGA in our Diocese. We are hoping to begin a group here in our parish. Mary Cahill will be attending the Mass in Portsmouth and would like to ask if any grandparents would like to book to attend and accompany her for the day trip. If you are interested please call Mary on: or m.cahill@catholicchurch.org.je. CHILDREN S LITURGY AT ST THOMAS St Thomas Children's Liturgy Group urgently need new leaders. The ministry would just be once a month on a rota basis. Will you consider becoming involved? Please call Catholic Pastoral Services on for more details. PRISONERS SUNDAY UPDATE Thank you for your generosity in the additional collection on Prisoners Sunday last October. Gift vouchers were bought for thirty children who had a parent in prison at Christmas. This generosity is greatly appreciated and is best summed up by the following extract from a letter received from a serving prisoner: "I am writing to say thank you very much for the vouchers supplied to me for my children for Christmas. My children were very surprised and really happy to receive a present from me as they are aware I am somewhat restricted in prison to obtain them anything! By your kind assistance it not only made my children's day, but also it gave me an appreciation that with your assistance it was still possible for them to receive something from me that otherwise would not have been possible. Once again thank you; it is very much appreciated." ADULT CONFIRMATION Application forms are available at St Thomas Church until Sunday 31 January. COLLECTIONS We acknowledge with thanks East St Helier West SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Next weekend there will be an obligatory second collection for Education Sunday. This will be used for resources used by our states school catechists. COMMUNITY NOTICES FR NICHOLAS ATTENDS THE OPENING OF THE STATES ASSEMBLY Fr Nicholas, as Catholic Dean, will be taking part in the service at the town church on Tuesday 19 January. This marks the opening of the States Assembly for the New Year. FR NICHOLAS GOES AWAY Next week for his post-christmas break for 10 days. We wish him some relaxing times and during his time away we welcome Canon David Mahy who will be covering some of the weekend Masses. THE WELCOME CENTRE Claudia and her team have been pleased to welcome you all at the start of this New Year. Unfortunately, Michael, our chef, has fractured his ankle and will therefore be absent for a significant period. We wish him a good recovery. UNWANTED CHRISTMAS GIFTS SALE There will be boxes at the back of St Patrick s Church and Our Lady, St Martin available for you to bring any unwanted Christmas gifts. These will be sold in a table top sale at St Patrick s on the weekend of 6/7 February in aid of St Vincent de Paul.

The Pomme D Or Hotel were so generous and hosted a wonderful evening to celebrate 10 years of JaCy and our fantastic pilgrims who will be going to World Youth Day in July.
