I must admit that in my first reading of it, it did not register with me that it was about a member of the church sinning against another, not just anyone. The second thing to notice is that the type of sin is not specified. It could be anything from just being nasty towards you, telling lies about you, going off with your spouse, ignoring you, humiliating you or sexually abusing you. Note too that the gender of the perpetrator is non-specific. What is important I think is that if a church member sins against you, then it is likely to be more hurtful than if it comes from a non church member. We expect our church members to live up to Christ's standards and when they don't it is more shocking. This I believe is one of the reasons that in former times those in authority in the church failed to take proper action against child-abusing priests. They couldn't bring themselves to believe that an outwardly holy priest could do such a thing. It was easier to assume that the child imagined it all. A hard lesson has been learned, and we now have robust procedures in place, and we are more inclined to believe what children say. As Christians, we are called to do everything with love. We should pray for those who have been deeply scarred by abuse, that the Lord will heal them. We should pray too for the abusers, that they will turn their lives around, and find forgiveness. The next section of the gospel, not included in this week's reading, concerns forgiveness. Peter asked our Lord, how many times he should forgive a church member who sins against him. Peter I think considered himself generous by suggesting "seven times". How many was the correct answer? Do we live up to it? WELCOME TO SPEAKER JOHN PRIDMORE John is a former East End Gangster turned Christian who now travels internationally speaking to others about how his life changed We are most delighted to offer the opportunity to hear international speaker John Pridmore. He is a full time evangelist who talks about his life as a gangster in London's east end, and how he had a life changing experience to the Catholic faith and the love of Jesus. He has spoken to young people all over the world and this is his full time ministry. Come and join us on Thursday 11 September at 7pm at St Mary & St Peter s Church. Tickets will be on sale after Masses in the East from 21 September. Proceeds will go to The Women's Refuge - adults 5 children (under 12) 2. LEPROSY MISSION BARN DANCE The Leprosy Mission is holding a Barn Dance with a live Ceilidh band and supper at St Martin s Public Hall on 13 September at 7pm - tickets 12. LITURGY AND SACRAMENTS ST MARY & ST PETER S CHURCH FEAST DAY Will be celebrated at St Mary & St Peter, by Fr Nicholas, for Our Lady s Birthday at 7pm this Monday 8 September. This date is also the 15th anniversary of the day Fr Nicholas arrived in Jersey. The SMP Stewardship Group meets after this Mass. CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME GET READY!! Begins this Tuesday 9 September. Young people who will be in year 9+ from September this year are invited to register for the Confirmation programme. It is important that the young person registering attends with at least one parent this Sunday 7 September at 5pm at St Thomas Hall. She died aged 98 at the Jean Jugan residence last Thursday. Her funeral takes place on 11 September at 10am at the Little Sisters of the Poor.
