Whoever says, I have come to know him, but does not obey his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him: whoever says, I abide in him, ought to walk just as he walked. 1 John 2:3-6 Grace to you and peace in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Think about how you might get to know someone a new friend or coworker, a neighbor or future spouse. Think about how much time and energy is invested in learning about the other person s likes and dislikes, their history and their goals. Really getting to know someone requires an openness to connect with them on a personal level so that common interests might be discovered. As you get to know someone and a connection is made, it is likely that a relationship is established. We read in the Scriptures that Jesus invites us into a relationship with him. Jesus invites us, just as he did with his first disciples, to come and follow him, to learn from him and to be his disciples in the world. Jesus invites us into a relationship with him so that we may carry on the good news of the gospel throughout the entire world. This passage from 1 John talks about how we come to know Jesus. This passage answers the question, how do you get to know someone? The author of 1 John says that we are sure to know Jesus if we obey his commandments. That, in being obedient to God the Father, in learning from God s only son Jesus Christ, and in experiencing God through the work of God s Holy Spirit in our lives it s only through these relationships that we come to know the Triune God, personally. Getting to know Jesus in this way, following him in this way, in obeying his commandments and becoming his true disciples, we experience the true and perfect love God has for us. Getting to know Jesus, our Lord, our Savior, and our teacher is vital to our faith. As we get to know him, we become consumed with a passion and a will to do just as Jesus does to love as he does, to teach and preach as he does, to sacrifice as he does. As we get to know Jesus and abide in him, the last verse of today s passage holds true, we walk just as he walked. I want you to know Jesus and I want you to walk just as he walked. This month, we have yet again an opportunity to get to know God and God s people in the world. We have the opportunity to build upon those relationships, to model and teach one another how to faithfully live in the Lord and walk in his ways and we have the opportunity to share the gospel with all we encounter. I look forward to serving alongside you this month in mission and ministry for the sake of the one who died for us that all may come to know Jesus as Lord through our words and deeds. 3 JOINT VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL will be held on August 7-11 from 5:30 to 8:00pm at the host church, Central United Methodist, for ages 4 through 6th grade (6th graders will be used as helpers). This year s theme is Surf Shack. You can preregister your child(ren) at We need two or three volunteers to help guide surfers and several to help with the meal that we will provide on Tuesday, August 9. If you can help, please get in touch with Pastor Josh at Sinai s Kids St. Matthew s and Resurrection children (and parents) had a wonderful experience at Lazy 5 Ranch on Saturday, June 18. Pictured below are those who enjoyed seeing the animals and taking the hay-ride around the ranch. Highlights of Council Meeting for June 12, 2016: 1) Motion by Jeff Mauney to adopt agenda, second by Nancy Smith. Motion carried. 2) Minutes approved with one correction: thermostat changed listed in the May minutes was outside the pastor s office at the church instead of the parsonage. 3) Motion by Fred Kiser and second by Karen Hollenberger to approved a Pre-School scholarship for Journey Buchanan for $ Motion carried. 4) Motion by Fred Kiser and second by Myra McGinnis that the amount transferred each month from Benevolent Foundation to general fund be reduced from $4,000 to $2,000 each month. Motion approved. 5) Awarded scholarships of $200 each to Sabra, Ila and Eli-za Reamer to attend Camp Lutheridge this summer. Complete minutes of council meetings are available in the minutes book in the church office. You are invited to call the church secretary at and set up a time to view the minutes. Our next council meeting is Sunday July 10, at 8:00 a.m. in the conference room. Council meetings are always open to the congregation. 4 Our annual summer gathering and picnic with Resurrection Lutheran was held at Lake Montonia on Sunday, June 5. The churches furnished fried chicken and baked ham while church members brought sides and dessert. The picnic was enjoyed by all. Everyone had a great time eating, swimming, and just relaxing by the lake!

Please leave donated items in the downstairs kitchen area, or if unable to do so, place items on the pew in the fellowship hall. Other items we collect are snack tuna salad; individual cups of cereal; packs of oatmeal or grits; cans of soup; individually packaged breakfast, lunch, or dinner items; and individually packaged snack foods. Please check expired date on packages. We need to continue to donate items during the summer months in order to stock up for when students return this fall. Non-perishable food or pantry items for the Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry may be placed in Mumsie s Little Red Wagon that is located in the narthex.
