1 THE WEEKLY MESSENGER Week of September 30, 2018 Today s gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable with a story we find comforting. Jesus saying on divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God s law. Jesus rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a child does? Pastor Kevin

6 St. James Mission Endowment Fund...Explained Recently someone asked what does the Mission Endowment Fund do. Let me briefly answer that by looking at each of the three words. Firstly, the mission of the Church is to spread the word of God to all the world, especially the community in which we live. Our charge and responsibility as Christians is to teach and show others about the love of God! Secondly, Fund is a designated pool of money or other assets set aside to use for a specific purpose. Lastly, Endowment is the process of granting the proceeds and profits of designated assets to committees, auxiliaries, groups, and individuals who have a special common need or plan to further a desired purpose. So, loosely speaking, Our Mission Endowment Fund is a pool of designated monies and assets that are invested specifically for use in spreading the Mission of the Church, especially in this Community, by providing grants and endowments to those who wish to better this world through Christ. At St. James the work of the Mission Endowment Fund is managed by a committee of 5 members who are elected for a 5-year term. We meet once a quarter for the purpose of supervising the investment of the Fund, and then we solicit and approve applications of need from the Congregation s committees, and organizations in the community for the purpose of furthering the Kingdom of God. Each year one individual s term on the Committee expires. Each year the Committee refers the names of persons who may serve on the Committee to Church Council. Council nominates individuals who would serve to the Congregation who elects one person to serve. This election is held each year at the annual meeting in December. We are looking for persons who may be interested in serving in this unique ministry. If you think that it a place where your special skills and talents can serve our Lord, then we would like to talk with you. Please contact any member of the Committee Dale Hutto, John Harmon, Kevin Turner, Charlene Frye, or Lisa Tyson. We would love to hear from you about serving. It will be a place where you will be appreciated more than you will ever know! God Bless You All! 6

7 The Wednesday Watering Hole Light lunch Bible Study Conversation Beginning Wednesday October 10th at 12:10pm Pastor Kevin will gather with any and all who want a light lunch soup or salad and bread and a conversation around the Scripture lessons for the coming Sunday. Why those lessons? Pastor Kevin wants to hear your questions and your insights so that our Sunday experience can be more meaningful. How do these lessons from the Bible affect our daily lives? What is God trying to tell us today? For those who are working, we plan to keep our conversations to 45 minutes. We will meet in the NE Age Room. Come be fed in body, mind and spirit! Church Council News The Council has been looking at the two houses owned by the congregation the Scout House next door and the one several doors down from the church to our north. The houses have both been inspected and now contractors have been contacted to give estimates on renovation costs and other options. The council will continue to think about how these buildings can be used for ministry. The renter in the house to the north has moved out. Adam Steele has served for the past year as President of the Council. For personal reasons he has resigned from the council. Mary Browder, Vice- President will fill in until elections in December. A nominating committee comprised of outgoing members of the council is functioning. If you would be willing to serve on the council or would like to suggest a candidate, please speak with Kevin Turner or Katrina Shealy. 7
