The kids are out of school. We ve put our plans in order. Off we go to national parks and amusements parks and family reunions and beaches and mountains and lakes and all the wonders of creation that God has made for us! Vacation time: a wonderful time to give thanks to the Maker! Looking back on the vacations that I ve been privileged to have, there is one vacation that rises above the others. In 2004, Sarah and I had a wild and wonderful idea: let s bike up and down Minnesota s North Shore. So, we bought two new bicycles. We thought we could get away with just getting Sarah a new bicycle, but my old mountain bike proved not even equal to the training rides. We rode a couple, three times per week around Forest Park in St. Louis. This was during my second year at Concordia Seminary. From our apartment, around the park, and back was an 8 mile ride. To get good and ready, we would sometimes go around twice. We thanked ourselves after all of this was over that we had prepared so well. Other necessary preparations included what we would bring with us on this trip. Since we were bicycling, everything had to fit onto our bicycles or backs. Oh the neat things we got for this adventure! We got racks over the rear tires. We got panniers, which are special bags that attach to those racks on either side. We strapped the tent to the top of one rack and a duffle bag to the top of the other. We had little backpacks to hold bike tools, wallets, and plastic sacks of water that could be drunk from by a hose with a bite valve at the end. The food we packed was an adventure in itself. We got a bunch of MREs and other dried meals from a surplus store. We thought we could heat water with sterno cans, but that failed miserably. Happily, we had brought a single burner propane stove also so we had hot food when we cooked. Sadly, the MREs became unappetizing after the second day. The trip itself began in Duluth, MN. That first day, we rode all the way to Gooseberry Falls State Park; 45 miles! We stopped at Betty s Pies outside of Two Harbors. That turned out to be a mistake that we learned from: do not stop and start again. We still had 12 miles to the park after Betty s and after riding more than 30 miles by then, our legs and butts were uninterested in continuing the trek. We also learned from that day that 40 miles is simply too much. Good thing for us, there were state parks pretty much every 10 miles from there on up to the Canadian border. We did not ride all the way to the Canadian border, but we did go to the last state park in Minnesota, 110 miles from where we began in Duluth. We turned around and bicycled back to Duluth. In all, the ride was 10 days long. We stayed in a hotel twice and camped the other nights. We still entertain thoughts of doing the ride again with the kids. They are a bit small yet. I hope my memories of a vacation well spent will help you to likewise thank our God for the grandeur of the world He made and the joy we have in it.

3 St. Paul Messenger Page 3 SCHOOL NEWS Rodeo Popcorn Stand The Popcorn Stand at the Midwestern Rodeo was a huge success again. Together with everyone s help, St. Paul Lutheran School raised over $4,000 for Physical Education, Art and Technology Supplies. The profits will also include education fee reductions for families that volunteered. A HUGE thank you goes out to Christal Buch and her family for organizing this fundraiser. A welldeserved thank you also goes out to all the families that volunteered at the Popcorn Stand. Great Job! Prang Power Program St. Paul Lutheran School is now participating in the Prang Power Free School Supply Program. You can help our school earn free art and writing supplies by buying Ticonderoga, Prang, Dixon, or Lyra brand products and submitting the UPC barcodes to Miss Jenks, 1st and 2nd grade teacher and program coordinator. St. Paul earns points for all UPCs submitted; the points are then used to purchase much needed supplies to supplement our supply budget. Please keep these brands in mind when shopping for back to school supplies. Also encourage your relatives, friends, and neighbors to clip and save their UPCs for us since St. Paul Lutheran is the only school in Manawa currently participating in the program. (Dixon Ticonderoga brand pencils: classic, high quality, easy to sharpen: traditional style of yellow with green metallic band and green printing or black with green band) Sponsor a Student How do you support St. Paul Lutheran Church and School? Is your support found in regular church attendance? Do you attend the special functions at St. Paul? Do you attend bible study or help with Sunday School or VBS? Do you serve in a leadership role at St. Paul? Do you faithfully give to support the missions of St. Paul? The Sponsor a Student program will give congregational members a chance to assist the families and students of St. Paul in another way. Unlike financial aid, this program will simply allow a congregational member to sponsor a student without the paperwork of applying for financial aid. Members can sponsor a student for a month, a semester, or an entire year. The amount of contribution or commitment is decided by the sponsor. This commitment could range from $50, a monthly payment, to $825, a yearly payment. Donors would remain anonymous. Have you heard about all of the great things happening at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School? Tell someone else!!! The school theme for the is Hope and a Future from Jeremiah 29:11. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. We are excited to welcome back the excellent, identical staff as last year. 5 St. Paul Messenger SHUT-IN SERVICE Thursday, August 18th at 2:00 p.m. This is a worshipful communion service in the sanctuary as well as fellowship with other members of St. Paul. We will be bringing the communion elements to the pews where you will be sitting (in every other row). After a brief communion worship service with Pastor Reichle you will have an opportunity to enjoy a snack in the fellowship area. All are welcome to come. LWML The July 19th LWML meeting opened with the reading of the Devotion "A Home Of Our Own" and the Hymn "My Faith Looks Up To Thee". The Bible Study was from the summer quarterly "Humbly Grateful or Grumbly Hateful". It told how we need to be "Humbly Grateful" when we feel "Grumbly Hateful". Reports were given on visits to the shut ins and nursing home. We closed with the "4th of July Prayer" from the Portals Of Prayer. Our Service Projects for the month were: 1) Pray for our country. 2) Pray for our service men and women. 3) Pray for our police officers 4) Pray for our Leaders. Our next meeting will be August 16th. Page 5 7 TH -8 TH GRADE CONFIRMATION CLASS Pastor Reichle will meet with the Public School 7th-8th grade Confirmation Class on Sunday, August 28th at 9:15 a.m. between services in the back of church AUGUST ANNIVERSARIES Jim & Chris Roenz Lee & Georgia Wiegert Jay & Pam Sturm Ron & Carol Koehler Aaron & Sara Baumgart Steven & Sandra Drath Gordon & Audrey Suehs Leonard & Kim Bartel Lloyd & Shirley Ferg Tom & Karen Helpap Matthew & Trista Sturm Scott & Tanya Jaeger Randall & Suzanne Suehs Rolland & Christy Young Kristina & Jeremy Boehnlein Duane & Alice Bartel Tom & Heidi Zander Richard & Lana Bonikowske Bryan & Karla Lockman Michelle & Andrew Drath Henrietta & Conrad Baumer Gerald & Joan Bailey Kelly & Charles Ramstack Lindsey & Hugh Leasum Melissa & Andrew Habeck Lindsay & Daniel Kassis LADIES AID NEWS Eight members of the St. Paul Ladies Aid met in the school dining room on Thursday, July 7th, 2016, for a potluck picnic lunch. We enjoyed a variety of delicious dishes. Prior to beginning our lunch, Betty gave a devotion based on the topic of "time." So often we use the excuse "I didn't have enough time," however we need to realize that time is a gift of God, and each one of us is given the same amount each day. It is our decision what we do with it, so let us remember to use it wisely, and to the glory of God. We spent the afternoon playing card bingo, with each one receiving a prize. Door prizes were won by Carol Beck, Yvonne and Lois. Thank you to Betty for purchasing the prizes. Yvonne reminded us of Bingo at the nursing home on Wednesday, July 13th. Annette volunteered to serve the fellowship after the Shut-In Communion Service on Thursday, July 21st. Carole Beyersdorf extended an invitation, again, to visit her at her Appleton home. A pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all.
