I say this as a Minnesota Twins fan and it is quite possible that you are a Milwaukee Brewers fan. If you fall outside those two groups, then I envy you because this year has been disappointing. I have been a Twins fan since they won the 1987 World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals. I still remember first baseman Kent Hrbek jumping up and down like a lunatic after he caught the final out of the series and then the whole team jumping on the pile. It was beautiful. So yeah, call me a bandwagon fan if you want because it took a World Series title for me to become a fan, but I grew up in Minnesota and I was 7 when they won and there is no better way to get a fan for life than to win a championship during that person s childhood. (With those criteria it is still a wonder to me that I count myself a Vikings fan.) I recall one year when it was not a disappointment at all to be a Twins fan. It was the year we returned to relevance after the very lean years of the late 90s. We had a good group of pitchers, our defense was air tight, and we could hit enough. Oh, those were the days. Those were also the days I had season tickets. $100 for all 81 home games. Yes, the Twins were desperate to sell tickets to the Metrodome. I sat up in section 202 with some friends. We were 700 feet or so from home plate, but we could see the whole field. During that year, something important happened that helped me see the whole world more clearly. The Cleveland Indians came to town. They scored 4 runs to get an 8 1 lead in the top of the 7 th. It was a Wednesday. That part will be important in a moment. The Twins scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 7 th. We lost our minds. The Twins held the Indians scoreless in the 8 th and we thought for sure this crazy comeback would be completed in the bottom of the 8 th. It was not to be: the Indians held the Twins scoreless in the 8 th also. And then they scored an insurance run in the top of the 9 th! We had come so close and now their closer comes in to end the game. Bummer. But the Twins got two runners on and Midre Cummings lifted a fly ball to left field that carried into the first row and won the game. We lost our minds again. We yelled ourselves hoarse. And then we went to Wednesday Night Fish at Concordia University St. Paul s Student Union. It was the on campus praise worship. And during In the Secret I was struck by how loudly I d cheered the Twins praises and it was just a baseball game. Why wasn t I cheering the Lord s praises for the eternal salvation and victory that He d won in real life? It was that night that I saw, if I m not careful, my love of the Twins and sports could certainly be a hindrance to the life of faith God calls us to live. Pastor Nathan Reichle

2 The St. Paul Messenger Page 2 PASTOR REICHLE'S SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE CLASS: It's Election Time: Being a Christian who is an American, not an American who is a Christian. 9:30-10:15 a.m. in the lunchroom until October 9th. MEMBERSHIP CLASS October 23rd - December 4th at 9:30 am! The next membership class for those joining our congregation will take place Sundays between worship services. Those who complete the class will be received on December 11th at our 8:15 worship service. Please inquire with the office or Pastor Reichle (natereichle@gmail.com). COLLOQUY Three of our staff members, Mrs. Beyer, Mrs. Hintz and Mr. Korotka, have started the Colloquy program. The Colloquy program prepares the Lutheran School teacher to carry the Lord s name and His teaching with faithfulness to the children and their families. The courses our teachers are taking provide them the religious training that Concordia graduates receive. They have completed the first five courses of the program so far and plan to finish by June Each teacher applied and received a scholarship in the amount of $ for the first course, paid for three courses themselves, and received financial support from church members for one course. To cover the remaining three courses the cost will be $1, each. Please support our teachers with your prayers and consider making a donation to the Colloquy fund. Brian Elmhorst Thank you for the financial support and prayers throughout our colloquy experience. Our coursework has shown to be very beneficial to our ministry at St. Paul School. We look forward to completing the next 5 classes to further benefit the students experience at St. Paul. God s Blessings, Joshua Korotka, Rachel Beyer, Deb Hintz

5 The St. Paul Messenger Page 5 LADIES AID NEWS The St. Paul Ladies Aid met on Thursday, September 1st, Yvonne called the meeting to order, and Betty read the story "The Woman and the Fork." It told of the woman who was discussing preparations for her funeral with her Pastor. She requested that she be buried with a fork in her hand, and after a conversation with her, and questions, the reason was that she was keeping her fork because "the best is yet to come!" Yvonne relayed greetings from Sadie, who is a resident of Living Oaks Assisted Living in Iola. Roll Call was taken and the secretary's and treasurer's reports for the months of June, July & August were read. As part of the treasurer's report it was noted that we received a check in the amount of $ for the Waupaca store Piggly Wiggly receipts that we had turned in. THANK YOU to everyone who has been saving them for us! Just a reminder, it is only the Waupaca store that still is part of this program, the New London store has discontinued it. There was a short discussion on preparations for the 125th Anniversary of St. Paul School, the gift cards sale and the "scrip" cards. Reports were given on the funerals of Virginia Gehrke, Beulah Suehs & "Dewey" Carl. Yvonne asked for volunteers to play Bingo at the nursing home on Wednesday, September 14th. Members responding were Barb, Lois & Henrietta, along with Yvonne. "Thank You" notes were read from St. Paul School for our contribution to their education fund, and from the family of Virginia Gehrke for serving the funeral luncheon. The birthday song was recited for Jeanette Rivers and we closed with the table prayer. Barb was the hostess. A PRAYER FOR PUMPKIN PEOPLE After Liz Curtis Higgs wrote the popular children s book The Pumpkin Patch Parable, people began using her analogies to say a prayer while carving their Halloween pumpkins. The pumpkin prayer, a Christian alternative to Halloween traditions, reminds people of all ages what God has done for us. Use it this fall when your family makes jack-o -lanterns. While cutting off the top of the pumpkin, pray, Lord, open my mind so I can learn new things about you. (See Proverbs 1:7.) While removing the seeds and pulp, pray, Remove the things in my life that don t please you. Forgive the wrong things I do, and help me forgive others. (See Matthew 6:14-15.) While making eyes, pray, Open my eyes to see the beauty you ve made in the world around me. (See Psalm 104:24.) While making the nose, pray, I m sorry for the times I ve turned up my nose at your many gifts. (See James 1:17.) While making the mouth, pray, Let everything I say please you. (See Psalm 19:14.) While lighting the candle, pray, Lord, help me show your light to others through the things I do. (See Matthew 5:16) After carving your pumpkins, display them as examples of how God s love transforms us into new creations. (See 2 Corinthians 5:17.)
