2 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018 The Check is in the Mail. In the Second Reading, Paul says that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing and chosen us to be holy and without blemish before him. These are wonderful words, aren t they? I m not sure I know the names of every spiritual blessing in the heavens, but here are some of them: love, joy, peace, patience, long-suffering. Not only are we blessed with all of these, according to Paul, but there s also being holy and without blemish! And now could we have a reality check? Is there anyone who supposes he is without blemish? And what about holy? Even to ask the question is to risk laughter, isn t it? And then there s love, joy, peace, patience, and the rest. What would you give for just an hour of these blessings in any day of your life? So what does Paul mean by saying that God has blessed us with all these good things? To see the answer, imagine that you are desperately poor, unable to pay the medical bills, worried about the mortgage, afraid the car will give out, anxious about the school costs for the children. And then you get a phone call: you have won the lottery. No, no, the caller says, it s really true! You have won millions in the lottery. The state administrators of the lottery are now doing the paperwork, and by the end of next month the check will be in the mail. Now what? Well, you still can t pay the medical bills this month, and all the other bills are going to be a big problem, too. You are still desperately poor this month. But you will face your poverty very differently once you know you have won the lottery, won t you? The problems are all still exactly the same, except that you know you have won the lottery. Your problems are not going to last. The check is in the mail. This is what Paul is talking about. We are what we are now, but we have won the lottery of life. God s grace works its way slowly in our lives, but his blessings are promised and sure. And so our struggle with our sins and failures is not desperate, but hope-filled. Hope is itself one of God s spiritual blessings to us. Eleonore Stump Thanks In the Gospel. They were men of action so they probably did not actively notice that they were becoming grateful to Jesus. But they did have a growing realization of what he was giving to them, and quietly they loved him more and more. When he told them to go out and preach and banish demons, they knew that the mission fit them. He had found a way for them to begin seeing with both eyes. If so, their gratitude was the reason for going where he sent them. Let s us keep our eyes open too. We are very much loved and ready to be sent. 3 The Dominican Nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery in Menlo Park, California are hosting a Come and See Day on Saturday, July 21 st, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Single, Catholic women between the ages of 18 and 38 years are invited to learn more about discerning God s call and to experience a taste of the life of a cloistered Dominican nun. The Fraternal Order of St. Michael has recently formed for Catholics within our diocese who serve their communities through law enforcement. They meet once a month. This is a profession most often encountered by the public when they are simply upholding and maintaining societal law and order. Caregiver/Grief Support Volunteer Training Memorial Hospice, Hospice of Petaluma and North County Hospice s Caregiver/Grief Support Volunteer training is a comprehensive, intensive 9 week course that invites and encourages selfexploration and self-awareness while exploring the realms of death, dying, grief and loss. Trainees learn about hospice care and grief support services through readings (manual and handouts), guest speakers, audio-visual materials, experiential exercises and homework assignments. Hospice staff facilitate the training process, with attention to team teaching and participation. Participants are pre-screened, evaluated throughout the training process, and participate in a post-training evaluation before placement as a Direct Care volunteer. Training is provided annually in the fall at Memorial Hospice, Santa Rosa or Hospice of Petaluma. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'. The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?' The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.

Maybe the parish doesn t care? Beginning August 6, a change in our weekday mass schedule, Confession, Benediction schedule: Monday, No Mass, Tues through Friday 8:15 am Mass, Saturday 9am. Mass with the Anointing of the Sick, then Exposition, Confessions and Benediction to 10:30 am. This should help those who do not drive at night. The Hall will be closed until pest control, new flooring in the side meeting room, carpentry, and the professional cleaners are done. Mass intentions: It is a beautiful act to have mass offered for the living and the dead. Traditionally, a donation of $10 is made but as I have said before, I am your pastor and should be praying for your intentions. I do not see the need for a donation to be given to me but if you do make a donation for the mass it goes into a fund to help people and some parish expenses. I do not use it for myself. Finance Council members needed. As some members have stepped down over the year I would like to have three new members come onboard. They must be Catholic, a member of the parish and have a good understanding of finances. I would like to have someone who has a background as a banker, lawyer, an average family person who runs the finances of the home, a financial advisor. Pope Francis: Pope Francis sent his prayers and condolences to Japan Monday following the death of at least 119 people in some of the worst flooding and landslides the country has seen in decades. Heavy rains and flooding began July 5, and have primarily affected the Hiroshima prefecture. A July 9 telegram expressed Pope Francis solidarity with those affected by the tragedy and noted his prayers, especially for the repose of the deceased, the healing of those injured and the consolation of all those who grieve. Sent on behalf of the pope by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the letter said Francis is deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and of the injury caused by the floods. The pope also invoked abundant blessings, and offered his encouragement to everyone assisting victims of the disaster and the civil authorities and those involved in efforts to uncover the nearly 80 people estimated to still be missing. In the midst of their rainy season, recordbreaking rainfalls in western Japan have resulted in massive flooding and landslides, killing hundreds and displacing thousands from their homes. According to the BBC, as of Sunday around 3 million people had been advised to leave their homes and about 1.5 million ordered to do so. The Hiroshima area was the hardest hit, though 11 prefectures have been badly affected. It is considered the worst flooding disaster the country has seen since 1983.
