2 The Fifth Sunday of Easter, April 29, 2018 Be Fruitful and Multiply The first command God gave to human beings was be fruitful and multiply (Gen1:28). In Gospel Reading, there is a kind of reiteration of this command. At any rate, the text describes the bad things that happen to people who are not fruitful. In Genesis, the fruitfulness has to do with reproduction. It comes from union between a man and a woman, and it multiplies God s image in the production of children. The fruitfulness at issue in the Gospel comes from connection too, but connection with Christ. It comes when Christ is in you, and you are in him. reciprocal being-in is a funny state of affairs, isn t it? You can put a bowl in a box, or you can put a box in a bowl. But the box can t be in the bowl when the bowl in the box! Boxes and bowls can t manage reciprocal beingin. But people can, because of love. Love unites you and your beloved without either one of you losing your identity. The union of love is not a fusing; it is a mutual indwelling. In the Gospel Reading, Christ says that he always remains in his own. If you yield to Christ in love, you have what is needed for the mutual indwelling of love. You are your beloved s, and he is yours. (Song of Songs 6:3) There is joy in this love, because Christ is so much with you that he is in you. There is peace, too, because there is rest for the heart in having your beloved with you. Your sins and the storms of life retain their power to afflict you. But you can more easily put up with things, even your own troublesome self, if your beloved is yours and you are his. In that mutual indwelling, then, there is love, joy, peace, patience and long-suffering. But these very things are fruits of the Holy Spirit. When they grow in you, you are bearing fruit. Finally, consider: is there a more powerful witness than a life lived in love, joy, peace, patience and long-suffering? If you have the fruits of the Holy Spirit in you, you will multiply God s image in others too. By remaining in Christ, you are doing what will make you multiply and be fruitful. You are all invited to celebrate with Bishop Vasa the Confirmation of our youth on Tuesday at 7 p.m. I want to thank those who signed-up to plan our Mortgage Burning Party/Big Event for next year: Giovanna has volunteered to chair the event planning. This weekend we have sign-ups for those who would like to be lectors and proclaim God s Word at mass. I want to thank all who signed up to be greeters. We need more of a response for welcomers /greeters. I was a bit troubled by the lack of interest by many of you in the pews. The sign-up list is still up. If you do not want to take up the collection, let me know on the list. During the summer we will have sign-ups for ushers as this will be a separate ministry in time. Anyone wishing to serve at mass as an acolyte who has made his/her First Communion and has the Okay of a parent can sign-up next weekend. Parents need to make sure that their child is mature enough for this ministry. This ministry has no age limit. When I get back from the Holy land we will have gatherings on how to perform your ministry.

4 On the small table/altar is a sign-up list for those wanting prayers while I am in the Holy Land. I will pray for your intentions and so pick out what place or date you would like me to offer your intentions at mass. Pick only one time for your intentions and put the number of the place and the date next to your name. I will collect the list next Sunday after the masses. May 30 On the Mediterranean Sea points to another commandment: service. Washing the feet, he tells us to serve each other in like manner, the pope reflected. In this gesture of service, he noted, lies the third lesson of humility, because no servant is greater than his master. The awareness is that He is greater than all of us, and that we are servants who cannot go beyond Jesus, Pope Francis said. He is the Lord, not us. This is the Lord s will. But beware: no servant is greater than the one who sent him, the master. These blunt words and actions are the foundations of the Church. If we proceed in like fashion with these three points, we shall never fail. The pope additionally underscored the witnesses of the saints of the Church whose actions radiate what it means to truly serve and who lived with the awareness of being servants. Pope Francis ended his homily inviting the faithful gathered to enter into silence, so as to welcome the gaze of the Lord. Humor When I do return it will almost be summer. During this time, we will go into reorganizing mode with ministries and parish chores (finances, landscaping, maintenance, etc. Be open to volunteer! This is OUR parish. Please pray that Deacon Joe and Nora are having a restful and spiritual time in Spain. Pope Francis Pointing to Jesus words during the Last Supper, Pope Francis offered meditations on love, service and humility during his homily at daily Mass on Thursday. The Pope reflected on the day s Gospel, John 13, which recounts the moments of the Last Supper where Jesus instituted the Eucharist and washed the feet of his disciples. Christ s actions in these moments, Pope Francis said, teach the Church three foundational truths. The first lesson is the commandment of love, which is exemplified in the Eucharist, the pope said April 26. Love is without limits. Without it, the Church cannot move forward; the Church cannot breathe. Without love, she cannot grow, and is transformed into an empty institution, made up of appearances and actions without fecundity, the Holy Father said. In his bodily actions, Jesus tells us how we should love, that is, until the end, he continued, saying that just as Jesus gave himself to eat and drink, he tells us to love one another in this way.
