2 September 9, 2018, Twenty-Third Sunday Being Able to Hear In the Gospel reading, Jesus does a miracle: a man who was deaf and impaired in speech becomes able to hear and to speak plainly. But the way in which Jesus performs the miracle seems undignified or even silly. Jesus puts his fingers in the man s ears and his spit on the man s tongue. Before the man s ears are opened to hear, Jesus looks up to heaven, he groans, and he says Be opened! What happened to the elegant kind of miracle where Jesus just says a word and a person is healed? Why this show, which looks embarrassing for Jesus? The answer lies in the question. What Jesus does is literally a silent show. It has to be. Jesus is trying to communicate with someone who can t hear. In other cases, before Jesus does a miracle, Jesus talks to the person for whom the miracle will be done. In this case, he does charades. His charade begins by letting the deaf man know that Jesus is putting a part of himself into the deaf man his fingers into the deaf man s ears, his spit into the deaf man s mouth. By this means, Jesus invites the deaf man to accept Jesus into himself literally. And then Jesus looks up to heaven to show the deaf man the source of Jesus power. It doesn t come from some magic in Jesus fingers or spittle. It comes from God, whose power is in Jesus, who is in the deaf man, by means of this charade. Even the groaning and the speech of Jesus to the deaf man make sense if we think of them in this way. First, the deaf man sees Jesus open his mouth to make the inarticulate sound of groaning. This deaf man doesn t speak, but even those made mute by deafness can groan. In groaning, Jesus joins the deaf man, who can see Jesus groaning even if he can t hear him. And then the deaf man sees Jesus speaking an articulate word to him, to the man who cannot hear. In doing this, Jesus is inviting the deaf man to trust in Jesus, to choose to accept the miracle to choose to hear the word that Jesus speaks to him. And so Jesus humbles himself to share the limitations of this one deaf man. James 2:14-18 What good is it, my brothers and sisters,if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, " but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and I have works." Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works. Mark 8: Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples,"who do people say that I am?" They said in reply,"john the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply,"you are the Christ." Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatlyand be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it."

3 Stewardship for week 9/2/2018: $3, The 2 nd collection this weekend is for Building Maintenance. Please pray for the the family and the soul of Joe Archie Archuleta as he passed away this past week The second collection next weekend is for the Seminary Formation of our men studying for priesthood for our diocese.the cost for each man can range from $30,000 to $60,000. While this collection does not generate sufficient funds to pay for all our seminarians it does help. Without the priest there is no Eucharist and without the Eucharist there is no Church. We could rightly add that there would also be no Sacrament of Reconciliation and no Anointing of the Sick. Thus, the recruiting and training of young men to serve in our Diocese as priests is essential for our Catholic future. Please be as generous as you can. She was born approximately 1869 in Olgossa, the Darbur region of Sudan. She died on February 8,1947 and was Canonized on October 1, 2000.Bakhita was kidnapped by slave raiders at the age of 9 and sold several times to different owners who beat and tortured her. When she was 14, she was sold to an Italian consul who brought her to Italy to be a nanny. Student volunteer hours may be eligible for school service requirements. Volunteers come from all walks of life and all ages: women, men, confirmed teenagers, parents, grandparents, and singles. We are not expert teachers we are ordinary people, just like you, who generously share our Catholic faith, values, and traditions with our youngest generation of Christians. Future Events in our Parish Parish Picnic and BBQ Parish Picnic will be held at A Park Park on Arlen, in two weeks, Sunday, Sept. 23, Mass begins at 12:15 p.m. followed by lunch: hamburgers, hot dogs beans, chips, green salad, pasta salad, water and soda will be provided. Please bring a dessert to share. Also, we recommend you bring lawn chairs, just in case we don t have enough chairs. Fee is $1.00 per person, signs-ups are taking place in the office and after the weekend Masses Up Coming Events In the Diocese Together in Hope The Catholic Diocese of Santa Rosa in collaboration with a multitude of Christian churches in the Santa Rosa area, Date: Oct 7th at 2pm are hosting a prayer event at Cardinal Newman field. We will celebrate the virtue of Hope in the midst of suffering from the fires, and pray for healing in our communities, and dedicate ourselves to hope in action as the Body of

4 Christ. The one-hour service will follow the Christian prayer method: A.C.T.S (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication) and conclude with live music and fellowship time. Parking is limited so the faithful are encouraged to carpool or organize parish busses. Overflow parking is available at Kaiser Santa Rosa Medical Office 3925 Old Redwood Hwy. Bring blankets to sit on the field, no folding chairs. In addition, at 1pm the Rosary will be prayed around Cardinal Newman in order to join Catholics Rally in Washington DC at the time and with thousands who have signed up on the website. The Hope Monstrance will also be present on campus across the nation in the Rosary Coast to Coast movement. We will pray in solidarity with the National Rosary for Eucharistic Adoration. I want to thank all those who showed up for the garden day last especially Dave Grundman for organizing it. There will be another garden day coming up to finish the spreading of the mulch. I want to thank Pat Fahy, Hunter and others for organizing and taking out tree stumps and pruning.a job that never ends. The other side of the church front is slowly being worked on for future landscaping. I want to thank all those who are involved in liturgical ministry,:the servers, musicians, greeters, lectors, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, church tidy uppers and floral arrangers,. I want to thank all those who have volunteered to work with our children and our youth and with adult faith formation I want to thank Manuel & Cecilia Morales for redoing the raiilings in the back of the church, Anastasia O Neill for donating the picnic tables in front of the center, Lanny & Linda Marlatt and for organizing the doughnuts after mass ( coming again soon) and getting the anniversary cake once a month. I want to thank the Pastoral Council and those organizing the Parish Picnic for the 23 rd. Without volunteers we would have many problems. I also want to say thank our staff: Deacon Joe & Nora, Liz, Black, Jennifer Bedoka and Paul Casey. I am looking for pinochle players for the picnic. I would like to find seven players so we can come up with a winning duo. Now for some news that is not so good. The floor in the church will be done over again soon and so the church will be Do you know people who are interested in the Catholic Church and want to know more?
