2 August 5, 2018, Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Fed by the Lord In the First Reading, the Israelites, who are marching through the desert, are hungry and they are angry. God should have killed us in Egypt, they say; then at least we would have died with food in our bellies. In response, God feeds them with bread from heaven. Manna falls from the sky during the night and in the morning, they can pick the manna up off the ground. It seems to have been an especially wonderful analogue to bread. Scripture says that it was small, and white and mildly sweet, like honey with coriander (Ex 16:31); and it was greatly sustaining too. Tolkien s Elven bread lembas, so prized for its taste and nourishment, must have been modeled on manna. This is a story to shake your head over. In my world, if you want bread, you have to go to the store for what you need, and you have to pay for what you get there too. And if you grumble against God angrily, you get a guilty conscience you don t get bread falling from the sky. With or without stores and money, we get no Elven bread at all. Why are these Israelites so lucky? Why doesn t God make bread fall from heaven for us too? Here, by way of answer, is what the story makes clear. God is a God of history. He intervenes in human affairs in particular ways at particular times to provide for his people what will do them good at that time. The only ones who got to eat manna were those grumbling Israelites. And even they got to eat it only for a while. When they crossed the Jordan River, the manna stopped. All they got then was the parched corn from the previous harvest. These thoughts can prompt a painful yearning. Who would not want to be among those who got to taste that honey-sweet manna? Who would not want to have been one of the people hand-fed by the Lord? And, yet in God s love, every yearning has its fulfillment. We too are fed with the bread from heaven; and, in the Eucharist, we taste the goodness of the Lord, which is sweeter than wine or honey (Ps 19:10, Ex 16:31). We too are handfed by the Lord. Although God is a God of history, for each one of us it is true that we will want for nothing. Eleonore Stump Question: Why do you think Jesus comes to us as bread or even as food? Would you have found that idea hard to endure if you were one of his disciples? The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated on Saturday mornings during the 9am. mass beginning on August 11 th. After mass: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, individual confessions, and Benediction until 10:30 am. Later this Month We celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15 th. As this is a Holy Day of Obligation the Mass schedule will be: Tues. vigil Mass at 7pm., Wed. 8:15 am. and 12:15 pm. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick was, in the past, most commonly administered to the dying, for the remission of sins, spiritual strength, and the recovery of physical health. In modern times, however, its use has been expanded. It is no longer called the last rites or Extreme Unction. Sickness of the body affects our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Persons afflicted with physical, mental, or emotional sickness such as cancer, diabetes, alcoholism, chronic heart/lung disease, arthritis, depression, anxiety, and/or persons who find themselves in a weakened condition due to age or illness. Those preparing for surgery and will be put under are invited to receive the sacrament. Even spouses who suffer over the illness or suffering of a spouse can receive this healing sacrament. Through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal in mind, spirit and body. The Anointing of the sick tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point but should not be used as a quick pick me upper. When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the grace to realize that God walks with them. Religious Education Congress 2018 On Saturday, August 18th, the Diocese of Santa Rosa will present a day of prayer and fellowship for all adults in the Diocese. The event will be held at Cardinal Newman High School, 50 Ursuline Rd., Santa Rosa. The theme is Called to be Holy Families. Flyers are in the church vestibule. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Holy Mass by Bishop Robert F. Vasa. A variety of speakers will be presented at gym, throughout the day. This day is designed to bring spiritual nourishment to all Adults in the Diocese. Early Bird registration is $20.00 deadline is August 11, After the deadline the cost is $35. For more information or to register, please contact Carmen Aanenson at the Diocesan Dept. of Rel. Ed. dre@srdiocese.org, , Registration forms are in the church vestibule. The Church will be closed Monday, Aug 20 th through Thursday August 23 rd. for major cleaning and a resealing of the tile floors.

Pastor s Corner As of August 4 th, I have been here for 1 year. I thoroughly enjoy being here at St. Elizabeth Seton and back in Sonoma County close to my hometown of Sonoma, even though the Diocese of Santa Rosa is my home. During my time here, I can give nothing but praise to Fr John and to you who built a beautiful church building with a lot of hard work and sacrifices. The debt is not all paid but through the Capital Campaign, the money going to the campaign has been paying off the debt. Over $150,000 pledged has not paid yet. As of June 30 th,we are in debt only $38,000. The campaign ends this coming spring. If we have any extra money we will put it into maintenance. There are so many dedicated people in this parish who take pride in it. The scriptures tell us that if we have a problem with someone to go speak to them. I realize that people got use to Fr. John in his 24 years here and I am a change to many who do not like change. I do not bite but if you have a problem please talk to me as words have come back to me of things I have said which are misunderstood. This truly hurts me. Also, when I receive mail good or bad if it is not signed by someone or with a return address I toss it Some people can send hurtful things by word and by letters. It is tough being called Father but that is what I am. With all the sins of the Church in the past few decades a respect for the clergy has been lost and people can show more disrespect. I know I can be a bit abrupt at times and lack patience and I do not do it deliberately, but I wish you would tell me. I see my chief role as a celebrant with passion of the sacraments and in preaching. By the way, I will be away when the church is closed a few days in August as I will be at a workshop on preaching. I can always learn new things and change. At this time, we are still in cleaning mode with the hall. The pest control will be here on Tuesday and then we can put things away in the hall if we have room. Humor: Sean is the vicar/pastor of a Protestant parish in Newfoundland, and Father Patrick, the priest at the Roman Catholic Church across the road. One day they are seen together, erecting a sign which says: "THE END IS NEAR. TURN YOURSELF AROUND NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE." As a car speeds past them, the driver leans out his window and yells, "Leave us alone, you bloody religious nutters. We don't need your lectures. From around the next curve they hear screeching tires and a big splash. Shaking his head, Father Patrick said, "That's the third one this morning." Sean agrees, then adds, "Do you think maybe the sign should just say " Pope Francis: Everyone is called to pursue sainthood through living the Works of Mercy, though it is not for the weak of heart, Pope Francis told more than 60,000 young altar servers It is true, it is not easy, but remember I will say it again the way of holiness is not for the lazy Do you all know the Works of Mercy? It s important! he said. To learn the Works of Mercy it is not necessary to go to university or to receive a degree, all can learn. Pope Francis advised the pilgrims to know and love the Lord Jesus more and more, encountering him in prayer, at Mass, through reading Scripture.
