2 FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN The month of May brings in warmer weather, more daylight and more outdoor activities. As we reflect on the year thus far, from the birth of Christ (Christmas), to Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, to the Lenten season, to the betrayal, death and resurrection of our Lord (Easter), we now look forward to renewal of life for what Christ has done for us. A friend said to me that it is almost inconceivable that someone would love so much that they would give up their life for others, even someone that they do not know. Yet we are called to love one another as Christ loved us. Is it really possible to love that way? The answer is YES, with God s help. For the month of May we will start with the first official meeting of the Saint Cecilia Guild on May 1, 2016 following the 10:30 a.m. service. We will meet in the Common room. On May 22, 2016 it is TRINITY SUNDAY Homecoming for former priests and former members. All are invited back to Trinity to see the renovation and reconstruction of the church. Let s make Trinity Sunday a family affair and invite family and friends to Trinity. We will have one service at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch in the Parish Hall. We look forward to what God has in store for us this month and the remainder of this election year. For whatever it is, it will be marvelous in our sight. May the peace of the Lord always be with you! Randolph Boothe-Pharr Senior Warden TRINITY SWEATSHIRTS.... READY FOR PICK-UP! If you ordered a navy blue Trinity Church sweatshirt but never picked it up, please contact Randolph Boothe-Pharr, Sr. Warden. Your sweatshirt is available for pick-up. Your check for $30 (regular sweatshirt) or $36 (hoodie) should be made payable to Trinity Episcopal Church. Trumpet Page 2
3 FROM THE JUNIOR WARDEN Restoration Update: Brick work on the tower is complete. After the masonry contractor removes the interior scaffolding, construction of the interior floors will begin. When the bell floor is complete, the new water- proof roof membrane for the bell floor will be installed. After this has been completed the bell will be set in place and the cap reinstalled. There is still much work remaining, including installing and painting the wood trim, and painting and applying the stucco to the exterior, but we are on schedule for completing the work in late August. All of the contracted work in the parish house is complete including painting of the common room and installation of the heat pump and painting of the crib room. In addition, the HVAC duct and diffuser has been installed in the kitchen to help cool this room in the summer. The vestry approved funding to repair the basement floor to prevent ground water flooding. In addition, the repairs to the churchyard wall are complete and four brick tombs were repaired and stabilized. E. T. Gresham is developing a plan for investigating the cracking in the wall of the colonnade at the North West corner for vestry consideration. Trinity receives money annually from the endowment that is restricted to churchyard maintenance. This money has been used in the past mainly to pay for grass cutting. If volunteers cut the grass, the money could be used for other much needed maintenance to monuments, tombs, gates, and tree trimming. Please consider signing up to help. The electric lawn mower is lightweight and easy to use (Joyce says so). The new air handler has been installed in the bell tower. Also, the chiller has been started up and cooling will be available in the church when needed. Joseph Saveika Do you (or did you ever) play a musical instrument? Is that guitar, horn or piano getting dusty in the corner? Would you be interested in getting together with others to play and learn from one another? If so, please speak with Fr. Charles or Joe and Laurine Dabbs to let them know. Once there is a sense of the level of interest, we will pick a date and time to get together to see what we might want to do in the future! 4 EPISCOPAL CHUCH WOMEN (ECW) Who we are We are Episcopal Church Women of all ages, ethnic origins and socioeconomic backgrounds who hold a variety of views. However, our common denominator is our love of God and the desire to do his work. Our Mission Centered in congregations, the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) empower women to do Christ's ministry in the world. Our Vision Our vision for all women of the Episcopal church is that we become a vibrant blend of all ages, coming together as a peacemaking, healing part of the church. We aspire to be a God spark - shining and sharing the love of Christ. Trinity ECW Officers: Dottie Lindley, President, Maggie Radford, Vice President Mary Andrews. Treasurer Participation in the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of Trinity Church is open to ALL women who attend Trinity. Our meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 10:30 am. To accommodate women who work or who have children at home or other obligations during the day, we will be establishing an evening meeting as well in the near future. We invite you to attend our meetings, but if you are unable to do so, you can still be involved in the projects and activities we organize or help with. These include receptions, special Sunday luncheons, the October Fall Fest and Pansy Sale, Spring Bake Sale, to name just a few. Within ECW are committees such as the Church Periodical Club (CPC) - see the article below; Hospitality, Prayer chain, TLC (which organizes food for those who are in need), Coffee Hour, and Fall Fest (scheduled for October 21 this year). If you are interested in obtaining more information about the ECW or participating on any of these committees, please contact Dottie Lindley, President or one of the other officers. Please join us! CHURCH PERIODICAL CLUB (CPC) PLEASE SUPPORT THE CHURCH PERIODICAL CLUB (CPC) ON SUNDAY, MAY 15TH, CPC is the ministry of the printed word and has been around for more than100 years. Your donations in the CPC envelopes provide bibles, hymnals and other religious materials to churches that need them. It also helps our seminarians with their education CPC also has the Miles of Pennies Project which helps schools and students in disaster areas. The Miles of Pennies jars for your pennies and change can be found at the back of the church and in the parish hall. One mile of pennies equals $844.80! It may seem that the jars are always empty but that is because they are regularly emptied. I ve come up with a new way that we will be able to see khow many pennies we have collected! Come see on May 15th! Dani Ballinger, Committee Chair, CPC Trumpet Page 4
5 In February of this year, Mrs. Martha Frances Fortson, President of the Trinity Foundation, Malcom Fortson, and Fr. Charles attended the 31st Annual CEEP Conference in Denver. Our parish is a member of CEEP because we are fortunate to have an Endowment. Following is a report on this Conference prepared by Martha Frances Fortson. THE CONSORTIUM OF ENDOWED EPISCOPAL PARISHES 31 ST ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN DENVER, COLORADO THEME: DO JUSTICE. LOVE MERCY. WALK HUMBLY CEEP (Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes) was founded in 1980 by the College of Preachers, Washington Cathedral. The pre-organization meeting of parishes was held at Christ Church, Indianapolis. The Consortium was incorporated in 1985 as a 501 (3) in the State of Indiana. The foundation members represented Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis; Christ Church Cathedral, Cincinnati, Christ Church, Short Hills, New Jersey; Trinity Church, Indianapolis; St. Andrew s, Kansas City, MO; St. Michael and St. George, St. Louis; St. Luke s, Germantown, PA; St. Peter s, Morristown, NJ; Trinity Wall Street, New York City. The first CEEP conference was held in 1986 in Washington, DC with 10 members and 30 attendees. The Consortium has grown over the years with over 129 endowed parishes in 2016 and 589 members attending the recent conference in Denver. Malcolm, Father Charles and I arrived in Denver on Tuesday, February 23 checking into the Marriott City Center in downtown Denver. I attended all of the three day workshops on Endowment Trustees. What a wealth of information came from the lead speakers on Endowment from across the country. Some of the highlights were workshops on clarification of the new Accounting rules for non-profits, Aligning Investments with Mission, the Power of Foundations and Episcopal Endowments: Destined to Lose in an Emerging Landscape. The opening keynote speaker rocked the house as The Most Rev. Michael Curry, our Presiding Bishop, presented The Jesus Movement and the Members of CEEP. What a resounding round of applause he received and a standing ovation from the crowd. The Bennie Williams Spiritual Voices of Denver presented a superb performance at the opening banquet. The CEEP conference allows for much networking and sharing of ideas. I talked with many parishioners of various churches about their endowments, legacy societies and how they got started, investment policies, responsible investing, Planned Giving, Donor documents and growing the Endowment. So many great ideas from so many knowledgeable Episcopalians! The Virginia Theological Seminary extended an invitation to us to attend their lovely party at a local restaurant entertaining their graduates and other friends of VTS attending the CEEP conference. Several staff members of VTS spoke on development, fundraising, capital improvements of the Seminary. We boarded buses the final evening to venture to the exquisite St. John s Cathedral for the closing Eucharist. This truly was one of the most moving experiences we have had in a long time. The Cathedral glowed in candlelight and the contemporary music enhanced the ambience of the worship service. The Rev. Becca Stevens, founder of Thistle Farms, was the speaker. A reception followed hosted by the Cathedral. Trumpet Page 5
6 CEEP (continued from previous page) Please know that this conference is open to any member of Trinity with the Foundation paying for registration and the attendee paying for lodging and transportation. The 2017 conference will be held in Washington, DC during the last week of February at The Mayflower Hotel. It will be hosted by The National Cathedral and Virginia Theological Seminary and the theme will be Faith. Power. Possibility. Please see me if you are interested in attending in It would be great to have a large group from Trinity since the location is so close to Portsmouth. As the Rev. Luke Back, Rector of Church of the Heavenly Rest in Abilene, Texas and next President of CEEP said to attendees: Through shared worship, research, conversation, and collaboration the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes will continue to knit together churches that will respond to reality with intelligence, vitality, and divine inspiration. How fortunate Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, Virginia is to have an Endowment which allows us to be a member of CEEP.
