1 TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 500 COURT STREET, PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA THE TRUMPET JANUARY 2015 FROM THE RECTOR As we enter fully into the joy of Christmas and the Epiphany it strikes me that this is a season about new things. Yes, many of us will have received new things from underneath the tree but more importantly this is a season about receiving the Lord anew. We see the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph who receive the joy of being parents and the new thing that God is doing in the world. The Magi who travel from afar and on the Epiphany receive the Good News that Jesus is born for the salvation of the world. Imagine their joy when upon arriving at the stable they find the Christ child and the Holy Family waiting there. Trinity is also in the season of new things. It is hard to imagine that just six short months ago Chrissy and I arrived here. Many things have begun and over the coming year many more things will continue. We are in a season of new things and new beginnings at Trinity. In keeping with this spirit of new things I am excited to share with you one more new Christian Formation offering we will have this year and every year following. What s inside... From the Rector 1-2 Photos, Christmas Eve Service & Children s Pageant - 3 Christmas Memorials & Thank Offerings - 4 Photos Christmas Shoppe Reception & Silent Auction 5 Photos Christmas Shoppe - 6 Stewardship 7 ECW, Children s Ministry, Oasis, Birthdays/Anniversaries - 8 New Vestry 9 WWJB 10 Calendar 11 At our annual meeting I spoke with you and told you that 2015 would be the Year of Good News for Trinity and this is the case. Our new committee on evangelism, or sharing the Good News about what God is doing in and through Trinity, will meet this month and begin planning a number of events and ways for us to better share that Good News with Portsmouth and the world. Part of sharing that Good News is being open and willing to accept people who are new and people who may not yet fully know the Lord. Beginning Wednesday, February 25, and every Wednesday until Easter we will gather at Trinity at 6 pm for a simple dinner and a new program called Pilgrims in Christ. Pilgrims in Christ is meant to be a catechetical program that helps people develop a deeper knowledge and love of God as they prepare for the great sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. But, Pilgrims in Christ is also meant for those of us who have been life-long Christians and confirmed for much of that. This will be an abbreviated trial run of the program that will help us prepare for fully launching it in the fall as we welcome a new group of catechumens. If you are seeking confirmation or know someone who might be ready then come to Pilgrims in Christ. If you want to know more about the Christian faith and develop a deeper love of God then come to Pilgrims in Christ.
2 FROM THE RECTOR (Cont d from Pg. 1) As we share the Good News about what God is doing in and through Trinity we must live in constant expectation that he will bless us with new people who come here seeking a relationship with Jesus Christ. If we are serious about our own discipleship love of God then we must be ready to receive everyone God sends us and be prepared for them. More information will be forthcoming about this exciting new thing that God is doing here. In the meantime, pray that God will send us these new people and that we might be ready to welcome them. Blessings, Fr. Charles Nativity from the Children s Christmas Pageant TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH 500 Court Street Portsmouth, VA Staff The Reverend Charles J.
