3 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches from the River to the ends of the earth (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! St. Vincent de Paul Society: Meets every second Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM in the convent. Parishioners are welcome to visit a meeting! Members take part in the activities of their choice, including helpful visits to families and persons in need, or some of the services found below. All services need new helpers! Clothing Center: Parishioners leave bagged, clean clothing, shoes and linens in the bin behind the convent. Some members sort clothing in the convent on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-10:30 AM; others organize the distribution at three Bethlehem centers on the mornings of the first, third and fourth Thursdays of the month. All activities need new helpers! Food Project: Parishioners donate bags of non-perishable foods and toiletries in bins at the church entrances. Volunteers bring these to the convent where members sort and store it for the needy families we visit and for food pantries. Envelopes for money or gift cards are at the bins. Family Matters: God bless our parish families with a fun filled vacation and safe travel to and from their destinations. May they be rejuvenated in their family relationships and return relaxed and nourished in body and spirit. You Pray For My Family and I Will Pray For Yours. 4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the Wife of Bath, by this telling remark: Husbands at church door she had five. Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride s father to the priest s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. Married Saints and Holy Couples: Whether you are married or single, you are invited to spend an evening with Married Saints and Holy Couples on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 7-9 PM at Monocacy Manor/Saint Francis Center for Renewal in Bethlehem. Fr. Thomas Kevin Kraft, O.P. will present several of the many holy couples which he has studied over the last 15 years and provide an opportunity for reflection and prayer asking their intercession in our lives. Come join us to become familiar with these powerful intercessors! To assist with our planning for this FREE Event, please register at Questions? Please call ext. 21 or adultformation@allentowndiocese.org Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. 5 WorldWide Marriage Encounter: Happy Summer! Keep the fireworks and sparkle in your relationship with a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend. For information call or visit Sunday, August 20, :00 AM - 12:00 PM Community Center Page Five Parish Library: Sts. Joachim and Anne were both members of the tribe of Judah of the house of David. According to tradition, they came to Jerusalem from Galilee. Over the centuries, they have been honored, especially in the East, at great churches and shrines built in their memories. Little is know of them, but by their fruits we know how people lived, Jesus taught. The church recognizes the parents of Mary and the grandparents of Jesus as models of family virtue and faith, which they transmitted to their offspring.
