1 January 2013 From the Pastor s Desk Our Mission To bring people to Jesus Christ and membership in his church family, develop them to Christlike maturity, equip them for their ministry in the church and life mission in the world, in order to magnify God s name. Special Events: January 5 LAMP Discipleship Program Begins January 6 Adult CE&F Winter Quarter Begins January 12 Sister-to- Sister Soup s On Lunch January 13 Cherokee Mission s Trip Informational Meeting New Year s Resolutions for 2013 By Rev. Freddy Fritz The practice of making New Year s resolutions goes back over 3000 years to the ancient Babylonians. There is just something about the start of a New Year that gives us the feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning. In reality, there is no difference between December 31st and January 1st. Nothing mystical occurs at midnight on December 31st. The Bible does not speak for or against the concept of New Year s resolutions. However, if a Christian determines to make a New Year s resolution, what kind of resolution should he or she make? Common New Year s resolutions are: to quit smoking, to stop drinking, to manage money better, and to spend more time with family. By far the most common New Year s resolution is to lose weight, in conjunction with exercising more and eating healthier. These are all good goals to set. However, 1 Timothy 4:8 instructs us to keep exercise in perspective: For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The vast majority of New Year s resolutions, even among Christians, are in relation to physical things. This should not be. Many Christians make New Year s resolutions to pray more, to read the Bible every day, and to attend church more regularly. These are fantastic goals. However, these New Year s resolutions fail just as often as the non-spiritual resolutions, because there is no power in a New Year s resolution. Resolving to start or stop doing a certain activity has no value unless you have the proper motivation for stopping or starting that activity. For example, why do you want to read the Bible every day? Is it to honor God and grow spiritually, or is it because you have just heard that it is a good thing to do? Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to honor God with your body, or is it for vanity, to honor yourself? Philippians 4:13 tells us, I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Jesus declares in John 15:5, I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If God is the center of your New Year s resolution, it has a chance for success, depending on your commitment to it. If it is God s will for something to be fulfilled, he will enable you to fulfill it. If a (Cont d on Page 10) Volume 1 Issue 13 January 2013 Page 1

Freddy Fritz Pastor James Nichols Pastoral Intern Melissa Noel Office Administrator Joanne Campbell Bookkeeper Cheryl Barber NTCA Director Marianne Cali Nursery Chris Christopher Custodian Eileen Fritz Children James Barber Youth Debi Hensley Pianist TBPC Trumpet Staff Rev. Freddy Fritz Editor-in-Chief Doug Knox Editor It is the goal of the Trumpet staff to provide articles for learning and growing, news for connecting with our church family, and information on opportunities for service and participation. The views and opinions expressed in the Trumpet have not been reviewed or endorsed by the Session. Please forward articles, ministry reports and calendar items for the next edition of the Trumpet to by January 15, Thoughts from the Intern By James Nichols In the past few months, we have looked at the two questions: What is the meaning of life and What is the instruction manual for life? We found the answers to both of these questions within the Westminster Shorter Catechism. We saw that the purpose in life was to glorify God and enjoy him forever, and that the instructional manual for life is the word of God contained in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. These answers are useful, timeless, essential and important for us to know. The Westminster Shorter Catechism is an extremely valuable tool for your Christian walk. For this article, I am going to list a few of the questions and answers then talk about the importance of the Catechism to your Christian walk. As I study for my ordination exams and try to memorize these questions, I am struck again and again at the value and importance of knowing these simple truths. I know that most of you will never be tested on this information, but these questions are ones that many people ask. For example, we have already looked at what we should use to guide our life the Bible. Now, what do you tell someone when they ask you what sin is? How do you explain to someone what evil is since society has a sliding scale on good and bad? The Catechism says: Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God. So not only is sin disobeying the law that God has set forth, but it is also lacking conformity to the law of God. This means that even if we are not in the midst of actively disobeying God, if our attitudes are not in line with God, we are not conforming to him. This is why nonchristians who do morally good things are still in sin. They may be doing good according to the world, but according to the Word, good is only things that are directed by te scriptures and motivated by glorifying God. This is why Jesus in Matthew 23:25-28 could call the works of the Pharisees wicked. What if someone asks who God is? Could you give a complete answer to who he is? The Catechism says: God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. This seems like a run-on sentence, but is a very good description as well. What is someone asks why we all have sin? You could point them to question 16, which talks about Adam s sin and how it came down to all of us. What about the things that Christ is for us? He is our prophet, priest and king, which is question 23. Why is Sunday, the first day of the week, the day we worship on instead of Saturday? Question 59 answers this question. We could go on and on in our thoughts about theology and the questions that we, and other people, have. The point is, it is important for us to know what we believe and why. I would encourage anyone who is willing to memorize the Westminster Shorter Catechism. If you are not up to memorizing it, I would strongly encourage you to read through it. There are only 107 questions, so you could easily read through the entire Catechism 3 times this year. This would be a great supplement to your daily time in the word and prayer. The Catechism can be downloaded free from online, or you can get bound versions as well. I would recommend getting a version with scripture proofs so that you can see the Biblical basis for the questions and answers. May God bless your study this year and your relationship to him. 3 TBPC Officers Teaching Elder Rev. Freddy Fritz Moderator Ruling Elders Jim Aldrich Bert Barber Fred Gordon (Sabbatical) Doug Hayman (Sabbatical) Joe Kirkpatrick Kevin Nobles Ken Pothoven Clerk of Session Deacons Mike Bowman (Sabbatical) Rick Donaldson Bob Guest Jon Massie Bob McQueen Chairman Back to Cherokee! The Session has approved the recommendation that TBPC send this year's Short Term Missions Team to the MTW Ministry to Native American Cherokee Indians in Cherokee, NC. MTW serves the Cherokee tribe through word and deed ministries. Backyard Bible Clubs, Vacation Bible Schools, Sports-Day Camps, Community visitation, and Senior Citizen Centers are among the many avenues through which teams can minister. Team members may also choose to be involved in relational evangelism through repair and /or light construction of homes and buildings. All ages are welcome! We encourage mixed aged teams and families. Young children are welcome, but parents must be responsible for their care and supervision. This is an excellent project for someone who is on a first-time missions trip. This is also an excellent opportunity for families to serve the Lord together, grow spiritually, and have a great week in the North Carolina mountains. The team will have "free time" on Wednesday afternoon; in the past, teams have gone White Water Rafting during that time but may do a different activity this year depending on the age of the team members. Our Team Leader this year is Doug Knox. Melissa Bayley has volunteered to be our Short-Term Missions Trip Coordinator, and as such, she will help Doug to build the Missions Trip Team, complete all required paperwork, and assist with the administrative and organizational tasks needed to properly put a missions team into the field during the summer of She will help us follow the MTW process to form and train our missions trip teams. Dates for the Missions Trip are June 22-29, The Team will be involved in raising funds to help pay for the trip costs, but no one should hold back from joining the Team due to finances. God has always provided for these trips, and we are confident He will do so again this year! If you're interested in learning more, see Doug Knox, Melissa Bayley, or Jim Aldrich. 4 Women s Ministry By Ginny Bremer TBPC Ministries Thank You Thank you is really inadequate to express my gratitude to all the people who contributed to making the 24th Annual Christmas Brunch a wonderful Advent event that helped to prepare us for the coming of Christ. Special thanks to Debi Hensley who both announced the events and coordinated the music sections of the program. It was a blessing to us all and gave glory to God. A special thank you to Lillian Barquin for sharing her walk with Christ. I encourage everyone to contemplate your individual blessing as you came to know Christ. And without question, compliments and appreciation to the chefs Brian and Alisa Carrier; the kitchen helpers Nathaniel Barquin and Ryan Coffey; the drink steward Chris Christopher; and all the servers who took care of all our food and beverage desires. And special thanks to all our hostesses who labored with love to prepare beautiful tables, centerpieces, and favors for their sisters in Christ. Also, the behind the scenes people in the prayer team, the ticket and registration team, and the office staff are thanked profusely for their untold hours of work to ensure our event came together. And last, but not least, I thank everyone who attended to share in the joyful celebration. We hope you were all blessed by the experience. 5 Note that after looking at the 2013 calendar, next year the Christmas Brunch will return the first Saturday in December, which is December 7, January Events On January 12, 2013 we will have our annual Sister-to-Sister Soup s On luncheon. It will be held at the church from 11:30 to 1:30. The soup makers have volunteered to make three different soups. All other people attending are asked to bring a salad, sandwiches, or a dessert to add to the buffet table. Mark your calendar and plan to join the fun, fellowship, and devotion we will share with our sisters. Women s Ministry will also sponsor a collection for the Pregnancy Care Center in January. A speaker from the Center will give a ministry moment on Sunday, January 13, to give us some information on the purpose and scope of their help in the community. We will again have a crib and information set up in the narthex for donations for two weeks following the 13th of January. There is need for diapers (especially larger sizes), both new and lightly used clothing (sizes new born through size 2T), and toys and baby equipment. When you think of these young women being brought to Christ, I hope you will keep them in your prayers and be able to contribute to our collection. Looking Ahead A new baby celebration will be held for Trina Jeffries on February 16, 2013 at Jena Barber s home from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon. You won t want to miss this unique shower as the guest of honor will be Baby Jeffries! Keep Trina, her baby girl, and the entire family in your prayers as they await a January birth date. Keep in Prayer Although Dick Fisher has left the area, he has not left our love and prayers for him and his family. Please pray that he may be led to employment that will use his spiritual gifts to glorify Christ. Also, pray that he will be able to sell his Florida home. Volume 1 Issue 13 January 2013 Page 5

6 WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY January 9 April 17, :00 11:30 AM PRAYER, DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? Please join us at the Women s Bible Study for our Winter/Spring session, beginning on Wednesday, January 9, We will use the book Prayer, Does It Make Any Difference? by Philip Yancey, author of many thought-provoking Christian books and editor-at-large for Christianity Today. Betty Pothoven and Margaret Gordon will lead the study, with Lillian Barquin, Virginia Bremer, Linda Childers and Eileen Fritz joining them in the teaching responsibilities. We will meet from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM each Wednesday for study, prayer and fellowship. We will not meet on Wednesday, March 27, as our sanctuary will be devoted to New Tampa Christian Academy Easter Centers that week. WBS offers childcare for infants through preschool age, by prior reservation. For those of you who are new to our church, here are our teachers: Betty Pothoven and her husband Ken have been members of TBPC for 21 years. Betty has helped coordinate WBS for 6 years. Leading WBS lessons has been very rewarding for her, and she hopes the same is true for all the ladies attending. This next term we've chosen the topic of Prayer. Even though a common topic, we can all learn much more about putting into practice this fundamental aspect of the Christian life. We will incorporate Philip Yancey s video on why we should pray more, and pray better. Margaret (Maggie) Gordon and her husband Fred have been worshipping at TBPC for 22 years. Maggie has also been leading WBS for 6 years and has always encouraged the women not to ignore the hard books of the Bible, including the Old Testament books, for they have such power and relevance. To our benefit, she enjoys supplementing our studies in their historical and geographical aspects through charts, maps and historical summaries. Beyond her teaching abilities, perhaps Maggie s greatest contribution is a humble, transparent heart as she shares her personal testimony of God s grace in her own life. Here are the lesson facilitators to bring fresh insights to our study: Lillian Barquin, with husband Joseph and son Nathaniel, have been worshipping at TBPC for 8 years. Lillian is a member of our choir, has taught the children in Vacation Bible School, and has served for many years on the Missions Committee. Lillian says: The past fall semester was my first opportunity to join the WBS, as I have previously been busy homeschooling my son. I thoroughly enjoyed the subject The Fruit of the Spirit and found it very insightful. I learned a lot about the Third Person of the Trinity, and I enjoyed studying under, and together with, women who have great scriptural insight. And, I made a new friend or two!" Virginia (Ginny) Bremer has worshipped at TBPC for 6 years, has attended WBS since she arrived, and has led sessions in previous years. For several years Ginny has also served as the Women's Ministry (previously Women in the Church (WIC)) Coordinator. Under her leadership the women s ministry has continued to prosper. Regarding her experience with WBS, Ginny says, When we read the Bible independently it often is just a cursory look. When we study it together we get to a deeper meaning and grow as Christians as we get to know Christ better. This enables us to live for Him more fervently. Page 6 Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church Trumpet

7 Linda Childers is from Pikeville, Kentucky, where she and her husband Jim were active members for several years at the Presbyterian Church. They have two adult sons who live in Tampa, so they decided to make a second home here. They have learned to love this area, especially since attending TBPC. Linda says Women s Bible Study is one of the highlights of my week. It s not only a great time for learning, but has provided me with the opportunity to get to know other sisters in Christ. I am excited to begin our study in January on Prayer. With several women leading the classes we are exposed to various teaching styles that encourage us to dig deeper into the Word. God has blessed TBPC with many women who are willing to share their talent of teaching. I am humbled to be included in this group. Please pray that God will be glorified as we study and teach. Eileen Fritz, Pastor Freddy s wife, wears many hats quite adeptly at TBPC, one of which is the Children s Ministry leader. The Fritzes have 2 adult children, Jon (student at University of Southern Mississippi) and Lauren (Covenant College alum, now pursuing an advanced degree). Eileen led WBS sessions last year and will bless us again in leading several sessions during our study on Prayer. She has the gift of encouraging everyone who walks into our church to be part of our church family. We are truly blessed to have this warm-hearted woman who elevates proper theological doctrine to the highest priority. Plus, she is quite witty! Asking for her personal experience in WBS yielded these pearls from her: Fruit bowls and veggies, and prayer groups with friends, friendly discussion on Bible content, teachers who studied before they begin these are a few of my favorite things. As you can see, our church is blessed to having these gifted and committed women teaching and guiding us in our study. We will have a wonderful time of fellowship, study, and prayer, and look forward to having you join us in WBS in 2013! The TBPC Missions Committee has set the following Goals for our 2013 Missions Conference: 1) 100% participation by Communicant Members in the TBPC Missions Program, supporting our missionaries in accomplishing the Great Commission. Participation could include prayer, missions work, and/or giving to our Missions Fund (all Communicant Members submit a Pledge Card, even if it is only for $1). 2) Fully fund the Missions budget (about $45,000) through pledges to the Missions Fund. Giving to Missions Fund this 12 months is expected to be $40,000, compared to pledged amount of $40,145. 3) Send a strong Missions Team to Cherokee, NC for 1 week - June 22-29, Page 8 Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church Trumpet

9 Missions Fund Pledge Cards will be in the Worship Bulletins on Sunday, February 24th (during our Missions Conference), and Sunday, March 3rd. A separate Missions Fund was started 4 years ago. Our goal is to fully fund TBPC's missions work through this fund, and not TBPC's General Fund. Our current Missions budget is approximately $45,000 per year. Last year, $40,145 was pledged to the Missions Fund during the 2012 Missions Conference. We are delighted to report that we are projecting that approximately $40,000 will be contributed to the Missions Fund by the end of February! Please be in prayer about pledging to the Missions Fund. Our ultimate goal is to attain pledges equal to our Missions Fund requirement of $45,000. Thanks so much for your support of the Missions Fund during the past 12 months. New Harvest Missions International Meets Goal! From TBPC Missions Committee As many of you know, there was a "matching funds opportunity" that Mission To the World (our PCA missions agency) offered to the ministry of Nathaniel Adawonu, New Harvest Missions International. If NHMI could raise $32,000 by the end of the year, MTW would match that amount, for a total of $64,000. Bob Guest recently informed our TBPC Missions Committee that NHMI has received over $37,000, so the matching gift required for the maximum MTW matching amount was met and exceeded! The grant by MTW will accomplish six needed projects which will strengthen the West African church. We are so thankful that God is blessing this ministry, and that funds are now available for these projects in West Africa. Bob Guest also reported that Nathaniel Adawonu will be on sabbatical for part of this coming year, probably 6-9 months. Finally, Bob briefed us on the recent NHMI Board Meeting that was held, as Bob is a Member of the Board. COMPASSION SUNDAY Report By Heather Tomasello "My whole being will exclaim, Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them. Psalm 35:10 (NIV) I want to thank my church family at TBPC for their open hearts to the needs of children in poverty. As you know, the Fall Ministry Project of the Missions Committee was to hold a COMPASSION SUNDAY on November 18th, We had 8 children sponsored - Praise God! One of the hallmarks of Compassion International s ministry is the one-on-one relationships between child and sponsor, so we look forward to hearing from the families who chose to become sponsors as they invest in these children s lives. Several additional families have asked me to hold on to packets (I have a few left if you d still like to take advantage of this opportunity). 10 New Year s Resolutions (Continued from page 1) resolution is not God honoring and/or is not in agreement in God s Word, we will not receive God s help in fulfilling the resolution. So, what sort of New Year s resolution should a Christian make? Here are some suggestions: Pray to the Lord for wisdom (James 1:5) in regard to what resolutions, if any, he would have you make; Pray for wisdom as to how to fulfill the goals God gives you; Rely on God s strength to help you; Find an accountability partner who will help you and encourage you; Don t become discouraged with occasional failures; instead allow them to motivate you further; and, finally, Don t become proud or vain, but give God the glory. Psalm 37:5-6 says, Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. I pray that you will have a most blessed 2013!
