1 ST JOHN S PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 3 June 2015 Edition Dear Parents, CONFIRMATION The Confirmation Family Faith Evening last Thursday was truly inspirational! Thank you to Fr Mario who welcomed the students, parents and visitors and for initiating our reflection on the Sacrament of Confirmation. Brother Harry, Marist brother and live-in member of the Exodus Community in West Heidelberg, humbly described how his compassionate presence and service helps many less fortunate. Hannah, also a volunteer from Exodus Community and Sonia, a volunteer from St Vincent De Paul s soup kitchen, described their acts of kindness as, examples of living their faith. Brother Harry took the opportunity to thank St John s students for the contributions made to Exodus. We were thrilled to learn that the Year 5/6 market day profit which was donated to Exodus Community at the end of last year, had enabled three families to go on holiday at Christmas. The Year sixes will continue their preparation with a reflection day on Thursday. Thank you to Elizabeth Williamson, Marguerite Ryan and the Education in Faith Team for the organisation of the faith evening. CONDOLENCES Last Thursday evening I was notified of Nick s father s passing. Nick arrived back in time to farewell his father and spent the last few days by his side. The funeral will be held at Cordell Chapel, Fawkner Memorial Park (Sydney Road, Fawkner) this Friday at 10.30am. Our prayers and thoughts are with Nick and his family at this sad time. SCHOOL BLOGS Have you visited the class Blogs this term? Ask your child to tell you about their learning and leave a comment. SCHOOL BALL Thank you to all families who have returned their ticket form this week. Tickets will be sent home next week. Please look out for them in your children s bag. PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS Parent teacher meetings will be held on Tuesday June 23 rd. A reminder that the children will be dismissed at 1.00pm on this day. A letter will be sent home on Friday with details about booking meeting times online. Have a happy week! For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers you did it to me. St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal This winter, thousands of people in crisis will be left with no option but to do whatever they can to make it through the long, harsh, challenging and often lonely months. Out of necessity, many have to rely on survival techniques to get by. The St Vincent de Paul Society invites you to help the thousands of people who do know these things, by giving to the 2015 Winter Appeal. Each year St. John s School supports this appeal by collecting non-perishable food items cans or packets to give to St Vinnie s to distribute in the Heidelberg area. Blankets and doonas are also welcome donations. The St Vincent De Paul Society makes a real difference in the lives of 1 out of 18 people in Australia. Please leave any donations in the container outside your child's classroom during June. 3 Maths Challenge - Connie Bandiera, Maths Leader Family Mathematics Challenge 11 - Answer Let the weight of the boy, girl, and dog be b, g and d respectively. b + g = 118, g + d = 72, b + d = 78 Adding all three equations: 2b + 2g + 2d = 268. The weight of all three, b + g + d = 134 kg. Family Mathematics Challenge 12 Twenty-seven small white cubes are connected together to make a larger cube that measures 3 x 3 x 3. All of its external faces are painted red and the cube is dismantled. How many of the small cubes will have only two faces painted red? Record how you do the challenge and then bring it in to school (with name and class) and post it into the Mathematics Family Challenge Box in the office by Friday. Sport News - Steph Doutre, Sport & Physical Education Inter School Sport My apologies for my mistake in location and venue in the newsletter last week for Inter School Sport. We played Alphington PS in an away game and what a successful day it was with all teams getting a win on the board. We are certainly doing well in all sports this term. Keep up the great work everyone! This week we have an away game against Buckley House, Ivanhoe Grammar. Netball and both tee ball games will be played at the school and football will be held at Chelsworth Park. State Football Congratulations to Anthony C on making the under 12 State Football team!, what a huge achievement. Good luck with all the training sessions and competition later in the year Anthony. State Netball Trial Congratulations to Lucy B who has made it through to the final round of the Under 12 State Netball team. Just under 3000 children from Victoria have gone through this process and Lucy has made it to the final 32, where they will pick the final 12. We wish Lucy lots of luck and we are very proud of her achievement to make it this far. Well done and good luck Lucy! Cross Country Congratulations to the following children who finished in the top 10, Isabella C 10th, Zac H and Mairead C 5th, Lucy B and Rachel H 2nd. These children will go through to the division cross country which will be held on June 10th. Good luck and well done! District Soccer The Ivanhoe District soccer will be held on Tuesday June 9th at Chelsworth Park. Trials will be held during physical education lessons and Friday morning at 8:15am on the bottom yard. The team is only open for year 6 students. Students must attend Friday morning trials to be eligible for selection. 3

Some of the older girls did some fantastic melted crayon art, where we hot-glued crayons onto black and white canvases in the order of a rainbow and then used a hairdryer to slowly melt the crayons and allow the colours to drip down the canvas. We also made some more slime the children really love science themed activities! Please be aware that as our numbers are increasing significantly (particularly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) it is becoming more important for parents to book their children in online or to give more notice for an on the day booking. This gives us enough time to ensure we are adequately staffed and able to provide a quality program for you and your children. If your child/ren are absent from school or other arrangements are made for them, could you please let us know that they will not be attending afterschool care. On the day cancelations/bookings must be made with a phone call or text to the program number on You will not be able to make online bookings or cancelations on the day. 6 Father Mario s Sermon 31 May 2015 (Trinity Sunday, Year B) Deuteronomy 4:32-34,39-40; Psalm 32:4-6,9,18-20,22; Romans 8:14-17; Matthew 28: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit! Go make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This is the command Jesus gave to the apostles at the end of the gospel according to Matthew; this is our basic relationship with God Father, Son and Spirit. To be baptised means to be immersed; in the early Church, and in some cases even today, those who are being baptised are totally immersed (submerged) in the water of the font. This symbolises that the newly baptised is now reborn to new life. The sacrament of Baptism immerses us into the life of the Holy Trinity, the life of God. We have already reflected on the fact that when Jesus ascended to the Father, he took with him our human nature, giving us a place in God s own life. We also reflected on the gift of the Holy Spirit, the gift of the life of God within us. To live the life of God is our deep calling and our journey as human beings, more so as Christian. We are all created in the image and likeness of God and we are all invited to fulfil within us this image of God to the best of our abilities. In this way each human being becomes a sacrament of God; through our life and love we continuously make God present in our world and remind the world of God s loving mercy. As Christians, immersed more fully in the life of the Trinity, we have a deeper calling; we are more aware of this reality of God who is love. As Christians every action we do becomes part of the life of God; this is why we often start our actions by blessing ourselves, calling upon us the name of the Trinity. The simple gesture of blessing ourselves, a gesture that is often done absent mindedly, is meant to constantly remind us of this deep relationship we enjoy with God. How do I continue to live every day this deep relationship with God who is a Trinity of persons? God the Father created the world and created me. The Father invites me to join him in creating the universe by looking after it and protecting it. At a time when questions about the environment are asked on a daily basis, it is my duty to live in a way that respects God s creation. While I walk through this creation I am invited to look after it and help it grow and develop, joining God in creating our world. Jesus Christ took on humanity and lived a life similar to what I am living. For this reason it is often very easy for us to identify with the Son as we find him more approachable. This also reminds us that we are all in the image of God; as I look around me at my sisters and brothers I see God under different forms and sizes. How tolerant am I of members of my family, friends, neighbours and even those who are very different from the way I see things? In the image of God I am invited to reach out to all around me just as God reached out and invited me to share in his own life. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of love, the very life of God. God sends his Spirit within us so we can grow into being images of God. The Spirit leads us to God and to one another. I am invited to accept and welcome this spirit as I keep on following Christ s teaching. Let us commit ourselves once again to our Baptism, living deeply this life of God. May God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit bless you always! Fr Mario 6
