1 St. Joseph s Gratitude, Discipleship, Hospitality c a t h o l i c c h u r c h As a Catholic community, we witness to the love of Jesus Christ in the world. July 26, 2009 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time TODAY S GOSPEL PHYSICAL SCARCITY AND SPIRITUAL ABUNDANCE When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat? Philip answered him, Six months wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little. One of the disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. Both Philip and Andrew are mired in the material world. When they see people, they count how many. And they know the unalterable law of the physical dimension: scarcity. There are too many people, and there is too little money and too little bread. What they see with a mind restricted to the physical dimension is an impossibility. They neither envision bringing the spiritual to the physical nor do they know how to do that. Maybe we can identify with Philip and Andrew with our dealings with today s economy. We are all caught up with physical scarcity and can easily panic. The question for our prayerful reflection is can we realistically replace the physical law of scarcity with the spiritual law of abundance that Jesus knows. It is this spiritual law we seek to know. The large crowd that so impressed and disturbed the consciousness of the disciples is not daunting to the spiritual agenda of Jesus. Physical consciousness can do only division. It divides five barley loaves and two fish into five thousand and panics. Spiritual consciousness works by multiplication. It sees the five barley loaves and two fish of the small boy as the spiritual starting point. The physical law of scarcity can only understand giving away as a process of diminishment leading to nothing at all. The spiritual law of abundance understands giving away as a process of expansion leading to sacred fullness. What about ourselves? When are asked to give, are we governed more by the physical law of scarcity or the spiritual law of abundance? As the disciples of Jesus, we seek to give to the degree we have been given. We are the followers of the one who gave his life out of love for us. GO GREEN! Read this bulletin at Schwartz@stjosephspenfield.org

Social Outreach/Pastoral Care MINISTRY DAY AT OUR LADY OF THE AMERICAS On August 1, 2009 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Our Lady of the Americas Parish is having a Ministry Day. It will be held at 316 Bay Street the former St. Francis School. We wish to extend a special invitation to the parishioners of St. Joseph s parish in gratitude for all your help with our ministries over many years. Please come see our new Mt. Carmel Food Cupboard and Furniture Ministry room and Matthew's Closet. Gratefully, Sister Julia BUILDING PEACE WITH JUSTICE In his recent encyclical, "Caritas in Veritate" (Charity in Truth), Pope Benedict reminds us of our responsibility to the world s poor: Life in many poor countries is still extremely insecure as a consequence of food shortages, and the situation could become worse: hunger still reaps enormous numbers of victims among those who, like Lazarus, are not permitted to take their place at the rich man's table. Feed the hungry (cf. Mt 25: 35, 37, 42) is an ethical imperative for the universal Church, as she responds to the teachings of her Founder, the Lord Jesus, concerning solidarity and the sharing of goods. Moreover, the elimination of world hunger has also, in the global era, become a requirement for safeguarding the peace and stability of the planet. (#27) Reflection: How can I imitate Jesus compassion and strong sense of justice in responding to the world s greatest needs? NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR Call the Parish Office to reply or place a Neighbor to Neighbor ad. Parishioner #34 is in need of housecleaning help. Lives in Penbrooke Drive area. More to come on primary Faith Formation... Parishioner #35 has a couch to donate, must pick up. Parishioner #36 has home health care equipment; a Hoier Lift (used for getting in & out of bed) and a Stairway Lift (for 7 stairs). 6

7 Social Outreach/Pastoral Care MINISTERS OF COMMUNION TO THE SICK, AGED, AND HOMEBOUND Reflection by Lucy Nunn Who are we? What do we do? Why do we do it? How can I be a part of this ministry? Our Communion Ministers are parishioners here at St. Joseph s who bear the light of Christ to others. We pray with and for those who cannot come to church, as we bring the Body of Christ to them. We listen to their words and help them know how God is present in their lives. Some of them are permanently homebound, and we are called as members of the priesthood of the baptized to bring God s presence into their lives. Many others have recently returned home from the hospital, or are recuperating, following minor surgery at an out-patient clinic; they may desire care for only a short period. Several of our local nursing homes request Communion Ministers on a continuing basis, and so we build small Christian communities to serve them and we help them celebrate mass on a monthly basis. Some of our parishioners know the joy of attending daily mass and they may take the Body of Christ to a relative or neighbor who does not have this opportunity. We seek to build up the body of Christ in our parish, and Communion Ministers are part of the Gifts Ministries. Wanting to reach out beyond our personal comfort zone, we listen to the stories of others and sometimes share how God has touched us in our daily lives. In the words of The Badger from Grahame, The Wind in the Willows: The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them. If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away when needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive. The food we bring is the Body of Christ to give life. Being a Communion Minister is a very rewarding ministry open to all, come join us! If you would like to hear more about becoming a Communion Minister, or having a Communion Minister come to your home, please call coordinator Lucy Nunn at or Cathy Kamp at , x For those interested in becoming a Communion Minister, a brief formation session can be arranged anytime. We will provide you with prayers for the Communion Rite, and cases (a pix ) for carrying the hosts to homes. If you are interested in leading a Communion service at a local senior facility, contact coordinator Jean Mahoney, When a family member is at home sick and cannot get to Mass on the weekend, always feel free to come to the sacristy after Mass and we can assist you in bringing Communion home to your loved one. 7

8 Community-Building/Evangelization ALWAYS WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH The ways those interested in joining the Catholic Church, have changed a great deal in the last 150 years! The priest traditionally did formal instruction in the faith. Recall from our history that St. Joseph s congregation built its first rectory in Since St. Joseph s parish was considered a mission, all of the priests from 1860 to 1914 were nonresident priests. Thus, here at St. Joseph s, the pastor did not always offer instruction to an adult prior to reception into the Catholic Church. When these instructions were completed, they were then able to enter into the sacramental life of the Church. However, there was nothing like our current Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and no formal welcome of new members at the Easter Vigil. SCHOOL/PARISH PICNIC PLANNING YOUR GIFTS OF HOSPITALITYARE NEEDED! We are looking for a few good men, women and youth to help out at our annual School/Parish picnic. It will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2009 from 12noon til about 3pm. (Set-up starts at 9am). We need help with set-up of tables, chairs, equipment, paper goods, grilling hots and hamburgers, staffing the food, dessert tables, and the registration table, supervising children s games and face painting, clean-up and recycling of bottles and cans. If you have an interest in joining this annual tradition of fun and hospitality, please visit or contact Eleanor or Mary Beth at the Malley Building Office; or us at: czarnecki@stjosephspenfield.org or ransom@stjosephspenfield.org. As our history reports: In 1974, as a result of Vatican II, the diocese was asked to reinstate the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults in October 1981, St. Joseph s began its first RCIA class and a list of 16 names appears in our history. This RCIA culminates at the Easter Vigil, when catechumens are received into full membership and sacramental life of the Church with Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, and candidates who have been previously baptized in the Catholic faith or a Protestant denomination receive Eucharist and Confirmation. It is truly a community celebration with many parishioners as well as family and friends who sponsor the catechumens and candidates involved in the formation process months spent in prayer, service, learning, faith sharing and interaction with the community. At our celebration of the Easter Vigil on April 11, 2009, we had 12 youths and adults six catechumens and six candidates who were received into the Church, along with the Baptism of the young child of two of the catechumens. If you are interested in the RCIA, please attend a gathering on Sunday, August 30 at 10am at Java & Juice in the Parish Resource Center, or contact staff coordinator Cathy Kamp, 8

9 VOLUME 3 Number 46 A Very Catholic Conversation THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES Acts 1:12-26 brings us to the story of the Apostles. Luke recounts that these men are depending on their roots and returning to prayer. Beyond that there is the question of who will replace Judas. Peter gives voice to Judas having lost his share. We are told that Matthias is the one to whom the lots fall. It is curious that we never hear of him again. What is the key here is that the number of 12 be complete. Recall that these are all Jews who know the Hebrew scripture and know the importance of both wholeness and the numbers that represent that. They also know that it is really about Jesus and carrying on his message. The story of Israel renewed in Jesus needs to be seen as complete and restoring the number is one way to emphasize that. This makes the Apostles once for all symbols of the whole renewal. It might be good to reflect on our share in that role. How are we once for all symbols of the call of Jesus, today? FAITH WORD Lots A means of selecting that relies on God, just as Jesus seemed to choose the 12 by lots so they then chose Matthias by the same method. FAITH FORMATION As we prepare for another academic year we also recall that our faith and learning about it is lifelong. I invite adults to consider how you will grow faith this year and consider monthly Bible Study on the first Thursday of each month, we meet in the morning or evening and all are welcome. LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN Offered at 5:00 pm Saturday, and 9:00 & 11:00 am Sunday. Blessed Pope John XXIII offered that three evangelical counsels were necessary for priests. The counsels are poverty, chastity and obedience. All are called to integrate these in our lives but we pray that those called to the priesthood reflect on them in very special ways, for it is by resting in these counsels that one who is a presbyter can more fully carry out the functions of the ministry. We might reflect on how those practices assist our priests in doing only what can be offered to the Lord. LAITY AND THE CHURCH The Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity invites us to reflect on the following, Since Christ, sent by the Father, is the source and origin of the whole apostolate of the Church, the success of the lay apostolate depends on the laity living in union with Christ.. We live in union when we remain in prayerful relationship. These day of summer offer us moments for prayer and reflection on our call and response 9
