1 June 6, 2010 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Sunday WELCOME BISHOP MATTHEW CLARK!!! As liturgically we celebrate our 150 th Anniversary this weekend, we are honored to have our Bishop Matthew preside and preach at our 11:00 am Liturgy. For the last 31 years, Bishop Matthew has been our shepherd of the Church of Rochester. We as a diocese are richly blessed. It is a privilege for us, the faith community of St. Joseph s, to share the Eucharist and a meal together with our Bishop celebrating our parish anniversary. The celebration of our 150 th anniversary is a source of immense gratitude for us as a parish. This past Monday on Memorial Day, we celebrated Mass in our parish cemetery. Some of the founding members of our faith community are buried in this hallowed ground. We have been built upon the strong foundation of the faith of our parishioners who have gone before us. May our sense of celebration this weekend spiritually and socially energize us to do our part in passing on the gift of our faith in Jesus for generations to come. May people recognize the presence of the Risen Lord among us in the ways we share our love with one another, in the ways we pray knowing our future is full of hope, and in the ways we reach out in service to people who are in need. OUR CHURCH RENOVATION BEGINS THIS WEEK!!! The project begins Monday morning at 7:00 am. Our daily Mass will be in the Blessed Sacrament chapel. The weekend Masses will be in Church. At some point, we may have to move the Sunday Mass to the gym for a few weeks. The length of the Church renovation phase will be four months. We wish to recognize the great work of our parish development committee who have provided the needed leadership for our capital campaign: Linda Wojciechowski (chair), Tom Glisson, Dave Frezza, Jack McCarthy, Cathy Kamp, Jim Gulley, Margaret Jones, Jim Paduchowski, Julie Goldblatt, Rick Vaccaro, Phil Monaghan, Art Cuestas, Susanne Perrone, Curt DeWeese, Kevin Sweeney, Marie Cinti, Charla Kucko, Molly Bach, Kathleen Taormina, Vince McAvoy, Jim Hopper, Mark Kukvka, Bob Schwab, Eleanor Czarnecki and Father Jim. Yes, there will be some inconvenience during the time of renovation. We do ask for your patience. We are very confident that our Church renovation will be a great blessing for our parish life and a genuine celebration of our 150 th anniversary. Schwartz@stjosephspenfield.org Go Green! Read this

In order to improve their skills and to better serve our community, Stephen Ministers are required to attend Continuing Education sessions during the year. This year Dr. Dennis Boike and Pastor Eric Weaver, presented topics involving divorce, depression, spirituality and dementia covering some issues with which the Stephen Ministers deal. For their own spiritual growth, Stephen Ministers also attended a Saturday Morning Retreat during Lent at the Mercy Prayer Center lead by Sr. Marg Mattle, RSM. To close this year, Fr. Jim shared with them on their giftedness and how they share that gift with others. In September 2010, we are anticipating a new training session to begin for those interested in joining this Caring Ministry. Perhaps you would like to learn more about our program. We welcome your calls at our confidential number of extension 130. Leave your name and phone number and a Stephen Leader will call you back.

5 OPERATIONS Many thanks to the young people who came out to work and to spruce up our grounds for the 150th Celebration. Girls from GSWNY troop and with their leaders Liz Russell & Chris Carpenter spread mulch in our new Mary Beth Carey Memory Garden and in our front Gardens. Helping them were 3 former St. Joseph's students now in Middle & High School, James Thaney, Andrew Caito, Patrick Moynihan. Our thanks go to Libby Russell, Caroline Carpenter, Jaelyn Green from Troop (Juniors) and Anna Carpenter from Brownie troop 60764; who when they had finished the mulching took scrapers to the gum on the sidewalk around church and removed many of those unsightly spots! Thanks too to Bonnie & Ted Voll who were out planting annuals around our tree in the west parking lot and to Pat Cannan for all her work on the garden entry to the Pastoral Offices (Malley Building). Funny how much can get done with just a crew of 13! FAITH FORMATION Announcements Men s Bible Study: Continues this Wednesday evening June 9 from 7:30 pm -8:45 pm in the Pastoral Offices (Malley Building). Please note this date is correct, there was a mistake in last week s bulletin. We are continuing with the book of Exodus. We always welcome new participants to join the other men who meet every other week to read, discuss and learn more together. Faith Formation Registration We are deeply grateful to all those who have re-registered, over 500 now, and we are reminding everyone that we would very much appreciate hearing from you if you have not yet responded so that we might adequately plan for the upcoming year. 6 CELEBRATION by W. Jack Miller (Parishioner for over 25 years) What does it feel like to celebrate 150 years So many happy times but yes also some tears. This parish has far out lived us all with a variety of parishioners answering God s call. The original church, built many years ago, on a hill with our cemetery as still part of the show. Has helped guide our town in many ways our thankfulness is shown, as God we praise. One hundred and fifty years of following His wish has given us special blessings at St. Joseph s parish. Our thanks to those who trod the earlier days they worked diligently to keep His love ablaze. To those who from us are now long forgone and lie sleeping beneath our cemetery lawn. Our thoughts and prayers will always be with you for beginning our parish and guiding us through. No one will live to one hundred and fifty years old so enjoy your parish and its treasures untold. And realize the true blessings God has wrought in our vibrant St. Josephs parish here on this plot. 150th Anniversary 6 WE ARE THE LIVING STONES Rather than one blow-out celebration of our 150 years as a community of faith, the St. Joseph s Staff and 150th Anniversary Steering Committee chose to honor those who have gone before and built the community we are today by celebrating every month. (see p. 7) Our anniversary events are a combination of the events that normally mark our liturgical year and special events to remember this milestone. On Pentecost, representatives of our parish leadership teams and Pastoral Council went to Sacred Heart Cathedral on our behalf to take part in a culminating ritual for Bishop Clark s three-year Spirit Alive initiative. Last week they shared the blessing they received with others on Trinity Sunday at the 9AM liturgy. On Pentecost the rest of us were invited here at St. Joe s to complete cards as the living stones of St. Joe s how would we live out our faith in the coming year by committing one gift to discipleship and the service of others? Today, on the display boards in the west alcove, please stop by to see the many and varied ways people have committed their talents and time. The many gifts displayed on the stone cards are a reminder that we indeed need to celebrate our anniversary in many and varied ways because each of us was blessed by God with such diverse and wondrous strengths and talents. It would be impossible to contain it all in one celebration or act of service. There are many people to thank for our year-long celebration countless volunteers and event planners, our leadership teams, the Parish Pastoral Council, and most of all the God of all hopefulness that it makes it possible for us to continue coming together on Sunday and Sunday in the ultimate celebration of who we are as a Catholic community the Eucharist. Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter: 2:4-5

9 A Very Catholic Conversation Volume 4 Number 38 The Acts of the Apostles Acts ; Chapter 21 shows Paul committed to go to Jerusalem in spite of the warnings from others. Paul arrives in Jerusalem and is greeted by the community, yet there are those among the Jews who continue to spread rumors about what he is supposed to have said. This leads to a mob attacking Paul and the Roman garrison having to intervene to restore order. In the end Paul asks the commander for the opportunity to speak to the people and this is granted. This might be one of the moments when we can get a sense of how focused Paul was. Not only did he want to go to Jerusalem in spite of the risk, but even after being attacked, he was still focused on how to get the people to listen to the saving word of God. Nothing can deter Paul from his purpose and plan, he is at peace with God and himself. He is walking in the light of grace. Two weeks ago Pope Benedict offered the following: The Holy Father renewed his call to priests to ensure that their "lives and activity are distinguished by a determined witness to the Gospel, and that they may know how to used the communications media to make the life of the Church known and help the men and women of today discover the face of Christ". Let us pray that all priests are granted the grace to embrace, live and proclaim the Gospel. Faith Formation This week I want to take a look at our classroom based programming whether it be in the summer, on Wednesday evenings or in our Catholic Schools. The classroom provides a place of learning connected to a curriculum. We use a spiral curriculum which means we teach the same core information each year but go deeper into that material as the students capacity grows. All of these efforts are led by catechists under the direction of DRE or Principal. The catechist have training available both on-line and through workshops. The ultimate end of this effort is to support you, the parents of our students, in your role as primary catechist. That is why we try so hard to connect with the home through notes and contacts and by offering those students in both the summer and Wednesday programs, the At Home Guide, so that you are able to engage with your children and follow up the lessons at home. Finally there is also access to web sites for all of our text, check your child s book for the web address. LAITY AND CHURCH This past week Pope Benedict spoke to the Pontifical Council on the Laity; The Church concentrates particularly on educating the disciples of Christ, so that, increasingly, they will be witnesses of his presence, everywhere. It is up to the laity to show concretely in personal and family life, in social, cultural and political life, that the faith enables one to read reality in a new and profound way and to transform it; that Christian hope extends the limited horizon of man and points him to the true loftiness of his being, to God; that charity in truth is the most effective force to change the world; that the Gospel is guarantee of liberty and message of liberation; that the fundamental principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church, such as the dignity of the human person, subsidiarity and solidarity, are very timely and of value for the promotion of new ways of development at the service of every man and of all men. 9
