1 June 13, 2010 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I would like to say a major thank you to all who participated in the liturgical celebrations of our 150 th anniversary. Thank you as well to Donna Spinella and her team for the great receptions following each of the liturgies. Bishop Matthew Clark presided at our 11:00 am liturgy. We are blessed and grateful for the ministry of our Bishop. The music was inspiring and very festive -- from our children, to our teens, and to our adult choirs. Matt Curlee, thank you. 6 Campaign for a Mission Driven People Phil Monahan FAMILY OF LOVE Reflection by Phil Monahan, Development Committee Member We, the community of St. Joseph s Church, are a temporary family in time of need and must help to care for each other. As a parish, we have chosen themes to demonstrate our commitment to each other and the parish: Discipleship tells our neighbors how we care by the example of our Christian actions; Hospitality is offered to those in need and each other; and we express Gratitude for what we have been blessed with through God s goodness and our own hard work. Recall all the ways the Church has changed in the past 50 years. We have gone from Latin to English; the priest faces the congregation now, not the altar. The recollection that the waters of Baptism are the path of life we follow helps us realize that as we walk from the entrance to our pews. The font of holy water connects us to the reception of the Eucharist and Christ himself sending us forth in discipleship. We have an opportunity to further our mission with benevolence to provide for the next generation of parishioners, and our children, with the improvement of our facilities. This shows our earnest efforts to leave a legacy and demonstrate on our 150 th anniversary our love of God, this parish, and our gratitude for our gifts. Love s imprint cannot be wiped away. The spirit of one individual can be spread to the next generation much like a grandparent s love for a grandchild. Love never ends. The love of God wraps us in a blanket of protection so we may face adversity and prevail. Be part of leaving a legacy of love. Make a pledge today: Go to and click on the campaign icon or call Julie Goldblatt in the Pastoral Offices, x.111. Community Building/Evangelization WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST FAITH QUESTIONS? STOP IN FOR SUMMER SUNDAY MORNING FAITH HOUR, 10-11:00AM, PRC LOUNGE Bring your questions and get refreshed about the Catholic faith on Sunday summer mornings, after 9AM Mass and before 11AM Mass. The following are some scheduled mystagogy topics share a topic or two that would interest you for future sessions. Contact Cathy Kamp, x.115, kamp@stjosephspenfield.org. ALL ARE WELCOME! Jack Miller (Parishioner for over 25 years) What does it feel like to celebrate 150 years So many happy times but, yes, also some tears. This parish has far outlived us all with a variety of parishioners answering God s call. The original church, built many years ago, on a hill with our cemetery as still part of the show. Has helped guide our town in many ways our thankfulness is shown, as God we praise. One hundred and fifty years of following His wish has given us special blessings at St. Joseph s parish. Our thanks to those who trod the earlier days they worked diligently to keep His love ablaze. To those who from us are now long forgone and lie sleeping beneath our cemetery lawn. Our thoughts and prayers will always be with you for beginning our parish and guiding us through. No one will live to one hundred and fifty years old so enjoy your parish and its treasures untold. And realize the true blessings God has wrought in our vibrant St. Josephs parish here on this plot. Join Us for Sunday Dinner Every third Sunday, 5-7 PM, we bring dinner to Bethany House and spend a few hours being present and listening to the stories of the women at the House. Sign up now to help prepare the meal (at home) and attend the dinner on June 20. Call Janice Ippolito: or go to bethanyhouse. 7

8 150th Anniversary Weekend! June 5-6, 2010 Special thanks to Donna Spinella and the committee that organized very special receptions following every Mass job well done! Bishop Matthew Clark presiding at the 11:00 liturgy expressed his gratitude to the people of St. Joseph s. As the living stones of today we go forward, offering our gifts in the service of others. Our music ministry outdid itself in honor of our celebration. The children are the gift of today at St. Joe s, and our future! The rain did not stop out set-up crew, clean-up crew or Rosie Farraenola! Kudos to our altar servers for the 11:00 Mass with the Bishop: Matthew Blahyj, Rachel Nesbitt and Connor Davis. Congratulations to Ray Garbach, and his wife Kathy. Ray was ordained to the permanent diaconate on June 5. May he be blessed in his ministry. Even Bishop Clark lined up to sign his name to our 150th anniversary tapestry, graciously donated by Barbara Miller. 8 Bishop Clark blessed the work of our Parish Pastoral Council, Development Committee and Ministry Leadership Teams with a blessing of the representative chairs.

9 A Very Catholic Conversation Volume 4 Number 39 The Acts of the Apostles Acts ; Chapter 22 shows Paul claiming his dual heritage. At the beginning he validates himself as a Jew, taught by Gamaliel. He goes on to describe his conversion and then he experiences rejection from the Jewish community. The story continues with him led away by the Roman Guard. When he is subject to scourging, he invokes his Roman citizenship which he claims from birth. This is the grace and gift of Paul. He is both a Jew who has accepted Jesus as Messiah and a Roman citizen who insists on his rights, and accepts the responsibilities that both afford him. He was the man who stood firm in belief, strong in witness and committed in faith. That is the model he offers to us. He might say, Get committed! There are two weeks left in this Year for Priests. As we begin to close down the formal aspects we remember that our care and concern for those who have heard God s call to love and serve in the charisms connected with the ordained life do not end with this celebration. Rather our Priest and their ministry are gift to us and we are blessing to them. It is in the dynamic of this relationship that the faith of Baptism grows in the community of the church today. Next week I will close with a prayer for Priests. I trust this journey has helped us all to reflect in hope and joy and thanksgiving for a good and gracious God who calls each of us. Faith Formation This week I want to take a look at our sacramental preparation. We gather students and people together when it is time for immediate preparation for the sacraments. Regardless of where the basic faith formation takes place we come as one community to celebrate the sacraments. We are one body in Christ and the celebration of sacrament is individual, familial and communal. We all join in and that is one of the reason we have prayer partners for each family and child as they move toward their celebration. As a community we join in prayer and unite ourselves to those who join us in the sacramental life of the church. We also engage parents with their children and all of us revisit our own faith life and understanding of the role the sacraments play in our lives. We also share our faith, our value for the sacraments and our love for Church with our children so that our catechesis is as effective as it can be. LAITY AND CHURCH The various tasks and duties of life fall to each of us in different ways and at different times. While these tasks and duties are many, holiness is the call that pervades all of that. We are God s creation and we are called to be one with God and that is holiness. Following Christ is our duty, our hope, our life. With the grace of the Spirit, fortified by the Trinity and through our own focused energy in faith we can be all that God calls us to be. We are not disparate individuals but the Body of Christ. We are one body in our one Lord, Father, Son and Spirit. We are hope for the future and the presence of God to one another each day. We are CHURCH! 9
