1 May 30, 2010 Most Holy Trinity Sunday Construction begins next week on Monday morning following our weekend of liturgical celebrations and receptions following each Mass. The sacrifices of more than 350 families and individuals have helped us achieve and exceed our Phase One goal of $921,000 we are now close to the $1M milestone! OUR LITURGICAL CELEBRATION OF OUR 150 TH ANNIVERSARY At all Masses next weekend with a reception following each liturgy Bishop Matthew Clark will preside and preach at the 11:00 am Mass next Sunday with a parish luncheon reception following. See p. 6 to RSVP. At all Masses next weekend, we give thanks to the Lord our God for the immense blessings we have enjoyed as a parish faith community over the last 150 years. Sunday after Sunday after Sunday for the last 150 years (7,800 Sundays), we have gathered to celebrate the Eucharist expressing our faithfulness to what Jesus has asked us to do. In so doing, we have been continuously spiritually nourished at the Table of the Lord. Next Sunday we gather with our much-loved Bishop Matthew to celebrate who we are as the faith community of St Joseph s. Of all the ways we mark our 150 th anniversary this year, to gather for Eucharist best expresses who we are as God s beloved people. May we as a parish community and a parish school leave a spiritual legacy for the next 150 years to those who come after us. As we have been blessed, we are to be a blessing to others. CHURCH RENOVATION The Church renovation phase of our capital campaign begins Monday morning, June 7. The project will last four months. We now have $980,858 pledged toward our campaign goal of 2.5 million. Our Church renovation phase is $921,000. We have remained true to our promise that we will not build beyond the monies pledged. Yes, we are set to begin phase one. Thank you to all who have demonstrated support with a pledge. The next phases of the project will be built after the money has been pledged. During the four months of renovation, we will celebrate daily Mass in the Blessed Sacrament chapel. Most weddings and funerals will be scheduled at St. Thomas More Church on East Ave. We apologize for any inconvenience. We ask your continuous prayer that all we do will be for the glory of God and service to our faith community. Go Green! Read this Schwartz@stjosephspenfield.org

In order to improve their skills and to better serve our community, Stephen Ministers are required to attend Continuing Education sessions during the year. This year Dr. Dennis Boike and Pastor Eric Weaver, presented topics involving divorce, depression, spirituality and dementia covering some issues with which the Stephen Ministers deal. For their own spiritual growth, Stephen Ministers also attended a Saturday Morning Retreat during Lent at the Mercy Prayer Center lead by Sr. Marg Mattle, RSM. To close this year, Fr. Jim shared with them on their giftedness and how they share that gift with others. In September 2010, we are anticipating a new training session to begin for those interested in joining this Caring Ministry. Perhaps you would like to learn more about our program. We welcome your calls at our confidential number of extension 130. Leave your name and phone number and a Stephen Leader will call you back. 4

8 SEE, I AM DOING A NEW THING! Campaign for a Mission Driven People One of my joys as a parishioner of St Joseph s is the opportunity to serve as leader of Children s Liturgy of the Word. It is richly rewarding work that more often feels like an extension of my grandmother role rather than ministry. Over the years I ve come to know the children and their families, attended their concerts, graduations and welcomed them back to St. Joe s with a warm hug and grateful heart. It is a privilege to share in the lives of our parish families, a community of worshipers that has become family. Recently, our three year old grandson spent the weekend with us and joined me for Children s Liturgy. His first experience with the children of St. Joe s, he hugged close to me, staring up at the older kids, tattered teddy bear clutched tightly to his chest. Despite encouragement from my group of helpers, he observed in silence as I attended to the readings, prayers and songs. Near the end, I asked the children to describe in their own words how much Jesus loves us. Hands shot into the air, bouncing with anticipation. One young lady smiled knowingly, eyes locked on mine. I couldn t resist. Yes, I nodded. How would you describe Jesus love for us? Like a well-worn teddy bear! she beamed, turning toward our special guest. The room erupted into laughter as my very pleased grandson held out his bear for all to see. Indeed! I said. There was nothing left to say. Molly & Bill Bach This child had said it best. Jesus loves us no matter how tattered and torn we become along the journey. He holds us close and near always. How marvelous the work of the Holy Spirit within each of us. Such teaching from an innocent child! When I look to the space where our new Baptismal font will soon stand, I cannot help but pray for the children and families of St. Joseph s parish. Those who have gone before us, establishing and sustaining this vibrant, flourishing parish for 150 years. Those baptized into new life in this church. Those who will be baptized in the generations to come. Most especially, the children with whom I am privileged to have shared a special relationship, many now adults serving in the various ministries of St. Joseph s parish. When I first saw images of the new Baptismal font, I heard the Lord whisper, See, I am doing a new thing! And I know it is much more than the design, location or size of the font. It is about what the Lord is doing in the lives of His people. May God continue to bless the children, families and Mission Driven People of St. Joseph s parish. Molly Bach 8

9 A Very Catholic Conversation Volume 4 Number 37 The Acts of the Apostles Acts 20;1-38 Chapter 20 moves from another example of Paul s travels, to his preaching and healing of the man who fell from the window, to Paul s farewell speech as he heads for Jerusalem and eventually Rome. Paul is passionate, Paul gives us a snapshot of the manner in which the early community prayed and broke bread He continues by proclaiming his fearless preaching, independent living and his gallant ability to face the future. He then concludes by telling his listeners about their duty and their need to remain steadfast in spite of the risks and dangers they will face. Paul is the dedicated, feisty, firm, strong and compassionate person. He is what you see. He witnesses what he believes and he lives in accord with what he has heard. It is that which he passes on to those who listen. This past week the Holy Father renewed his call to priests to ensure that their "lives and activity are distinguished by a determined witness to the Gospel, and that they may know how to use the communications media to make the life of the Church known and help the men and women of today discover the face of Christ". If we are to be the Church of Jesus who sent the word to all we have to effectively use the modern media in ways that join people to one another and call them to assemble and join in worship and praise of God. Faith Formation As I look ahead I have five more of these columns to write including this one. So each week I would like to address one program area we have. Let me begin with family ed. We do FIRE, Branch and our Gathered Program on Monday and Wednesday. The faith is always rooted in the home. The home and family are the birthplace of faith and where it finds the soil in which it grows. The Church assists families and parents who are indeed the first teachers. The process that helps that is when staff assists the parent to be the best teacher they can be. We do that by resourcing which comes from listening. SO I encourage the families to be in conversation so that you can ensure that the resources that you need are made available to you. We have tried to extend that this past year with on-line aids that offer you choice and ways to apply what you are learning to the lived experience of your family life. The family has always been and will always be the fundamental unit of society. St Joseph is blessed with so many good families who live faith. LAITY AND CHURCH This past week Pope Benedict offered the following reflection on hope; "Is the Church, then, a place of hope?", the Pope asked. "Yes", he said, "because from her the Word of God comes ever and anew, purifying us and showing us the path of faith. She is a place of hope because in her the Lord continues to give Himself to us in the grace of the Sacraments, in the words of reconciliation, in the multiple gifts of His consolation. Nothing can darken or destroy all this, and so we should be glad amidst all the tribulations. Locally, we announced this past Tuesday that Dr. Scott Caton who has been with us here at Saint Joseph this past year will be ordained a transitional Deacon on June 5. Scott s journey as teacher, minister, husband and father will unfold for us all over the coming year and the year of the Priest meets the laity and Church. 9
