Whilst I was out, news had broken of the death of Nelson Mandela and, all of a sudden it seemed, everybody had a thought that they needed to share. As I listened to interview after interview and read comment after comment, I was reminded once more of what a remarkable man Mandela was, what an extraordinary life he had led, and what remarkable achievements he had accomplished. But as I listened, and as I read, something else occurred to me as well. Each person seemed to be quoting something different that Mandela had said. Each one chose a sentence or phrase that spoke to them, inspiring and challenging them as individuals or helping them reflect upon the world in which they lived. There was such a wonderful variety of wisdom and grace that flowed from his often beautifully crafted words. Nelson Mandela really was a man who could inspire a generation.and that applied to every generation! This came home to me most clearly one year when we took our group to Soul Survivor. In an age of slogan and sound bite one of the speakers quoted Mandela and his words took root in our group and they often returned to them. What were the words that so shaped those young lives? Sometimes it falls to a generation to be great. You can be that generation. Whether as an individual, as a group or indeed as a generation, we must strive never to miss an opportunity to make a difference to change a life, to improve a community, to bless a nation. Pain and sorrow, tears and sadness changed for gladness on that day. Prophet voices loudly crying, making pathways clear, glimpsing glory, self-denying, calling all to hear. Through their messagechallenged, shakenhearts awaken: God is near!

Tonight, The Comfort Christ brings at Christmas Sunday Lunch Today at 12.30pm CHRISTMAS CARD DISTRIBUTION - This year we are tweaking the way in which Christmas cards are distributed among the Church Family. We would ask that cards be posted in the Christmas Post Box as you enter Church (during the week it will be placed outside the entrance to the Prayer Chapel, in the Sanctuary). Cards will then be taken to the Sorting Office located underneath the stairs at the back of the building. Distribution, carried out by the children (with some supervision), will take place before and after Sunday morning worship cards can be accessed in the normal way from the Sorting Office during the week. If you wish to send a Christmas greeting to the whole Church family, please pin your card onto the notice under the TV screen in Sambell s. We are aware that those who send these cards often make donations to charities of their choice in lieu of cards; however, you may wish to make a contribution towards our Christmas Day charities Hospice South West and Inspire Cornwall CIC. The Church Office will be happy to receive and direct any giving. Ministry Team LUNCHTIME SERVICE - All are welcome to attend the third of the short (liturgy-based) Services on Tuesday 10 th December ( pm). Ministry Team

Stars and more stars... at Tresillian from 4.30pm All families welcome for star crafts, star worship, drums, puppets, songs, handbells, candles and more... Special star tea to be followed by the family film The Fourth King for anyone who wants to stay! (approx 50min) Come in a Nativity costume if you wish. Dec 15 th ADVENT JOURNEY - Following the fabulous response from families and individuals wanting to host the Advent Crib, two Cribs started their journey from TMC (City) last Sunday. They are on their way around our community areas ( Crib No 1 is focused to the north and east, whilst Crib No 2 will stay mainly to the south and west) and will spend time at the Tresillian Nativity Festival, before both returning to TMC (City) for worship on Christmas Day morning. There is a list displayed at the back of the Sanctuary, so everyone knows when to expect their visitors, and also to give you an idea of where you will be required to deliver the Crib the next day. More detailed instructions will arrive with your Crib along with the prayer to be shared; please don t forget to take a photo of the crib in your house and then it to us! However, if you foresee any difficulties, please do not hesitate to let us know. We also apologise to anyone who wanted to be a part of this but who has been missed ; we did our best to include all who are interested. Hopefully, though, we will all be able to feel a part of the journey as we follow the Cribs footsteps around the Church... Ministry Team PRAYER AND FELLOWSHIP GROUPS Huthnance Close House Group will meet for the last time before the New Year on December 9 th at 9 Huthnance Close at 3pm to hear the lecture on DVD entitled: 'The Acts of the Apostles'. Copes Gardens House Group will have a bring and share lunch at 12.00noon on Tuesday 10 th December. Advent Course will be held on Tuesdays 10 th and 17 th December at 2.30pm at 'The Granary', Tresillian. Tuesday Evening Fellowship No meeting this week. Epworth House Group will meet on Wednesday 11 th December at 26 Epworth Close at to continue the study of the Acts of the Apostles.

5 CROSSROADS HOUSE GROUP Our final session for this year will be on Tuesday 10 th December, 7.45pm at the home of Sue and Jan Strawford. Please bring along some food and drinks as well as a Christmas item to share with the group for a festive social evening. SPECIAL EVENTS TRURO METHODIST CIRCUIT LUNCH CLUB - Our 'Christmas' meeting will be on Monday 9 th December at 12 noon in the Wesley Hall for lunch and 1.00 pm in the Church Parlour for a presentation on 'The Star of Bethlehem' to be given by Mr Nick Fisher, Deputy Head of Truro School. Visitors will be most welcome. TMC Flower Guild Coffee Morning and Christmas Table Decoration Sale Wednesday 11 th December 10.00am 12.00noon The Flower Guild is holding a coffee morning on Wednesday 11 th December in Sambell s. Please come along and support us. There will be homemade cakes and preserve, arts and crafts and table decorations for sale. It s also a chance to meet friends for a coffee and a chat. The Wednesday Club is holding its Christmas Party on Wednesday 11 th December, at 2.00 pm in the Parlour. We are hoping to have some musical items by members of the choir. All friends are welcome Wednesday Late Night Opening The Church is opening from pm on Wednesday evenings to provide free teas and coffees and mince pies. If you can help this outreach on Wednesdays, please contact Rosemary Ballard on Also donations of mince pies would be appreciated. QUIZ Thursday 12 th December, 7.00pm. Christmas 'Fun' Quiz at Tresillian Chapel - 3 per person to include pasties and refreshments in aid of Mozambique vehicle fund. LOOKING FORWARD TRESILLIAN NATIVITY FESTIVAL 18 th -22 nd December Everybody has more than one Nativity, a family one, one that goes by the TV, an old one in a box your Auntie gave you, a foreign one or maybe a record sleeve? A nativity scene is far more than just the figures that go by the TV. At the festival last year we had over 100 Nativity scenes vintage and new, knitted, big and miniature, from all over the world, plus retro decorations. We also had Advent calendars, record sleeves, tree ornaments, snow globes, Christmas cards, lights, puppets, window stickers, lego, handmade and a table cloth! Basically ANYTHING with a Nativity theme really. So do we have you thinking about what's in your attic? Go on, have a rummage and see what you can find and help us add to the display at the festival this year. We would also appreciate any spare fairy lights and navy or white fabric which people might be able to offer. We are open from 18 th to 22 nd December. 6 The Service at Cathedral View Nursing Home will be on Monday 23 rd December. There will be Communion at 2pm followed by Christmas carols; anyone wishing to come and make a joyful noise would be most welcome. The Christmas Eve Truro Nativity 3.15pm Thank you to those who have already volunteered to help out on Christmas Eve. We are still in need of a few more volunteers so please let me know if you can spare a couple of hours and lend your support: band members, stewards, shepherds... all will be gratefully welcomed! In particular we are looking for a kind volunteer to prepare and serve the Christmas punch which warms everyone up at the end of the afternoon. We have the recipe! Shopping for the items is not a problem! BUT we need someone to make the punch. This can be done in the morning/early afternoon then be heated through whilst the Live Nativity is taking place. NEWS DISASTERS EMERGENCY COMMITTEE - THE PHILIPPINES APPEAL The generous sum of was recently given by friends at TMC and Tresillian on behalf of the above. Young J Team people also helped with the appeal and more sponsor monies are being collected by them. The final total will, therefore, be even greater. John Varcoe Car Park Permits for 2014 Applications for 2014 car park permits for existing holders will be placed in the Christmas Card rack. Instructions for renewal are included.
