2 Woe to the shepherds In today s First Reading, through the prophet Jeremiah, the Lord declares that He will punish the evil deeds of those shepherds who have driven His People away from Him, the One, True God. Woe to these shepherds because God Himself will deal harshly with them. the Lord promises to send the righteous shoot to David, Jesus, to govern His People justly and kindly so that they need no longer fear and tremble. Throughout Church history, there have been times when the Lord s shepherds- Church and government leaders- have led God s People astray, just as the shepherds of the Old Testament once did. The Lord s Crucifixion was the direct result of poor shepherding by the temple priests and religious scribes in collusion with government leaders. As a result, the first leaders of our Church, the Apostles, hid in the Upper Room until the Holy Spirit gave them the power to resist attempts to persecute them for their faith in Jesus. Two of the greatest leaders of our Church, Saint Peter and Saint Paul, were divided in their understanding of God s Will for His People. Peter believed that God desired that those Gentiles who converted to Christianity should also follow the Law of Moses like the Jewish converts (diet, circumcision, etc.). Paul did not believe this was God s will for new Christians. Many of their writings were the result of this division. The Lord s hand was upon both of them, even though they themselves disagreed. Paul felt compelled to write: When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong. Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group (Galatians 2:11). Peter, through the power of the Holy Spirit, eventually realized that Paul was indeed correct in his understanding of God s will for His People (Acts 15). During these early years, over 60, 000 Christians were put to death during the height of the Roman persecution by government leaders. Three hundred years later, a bishop of the Church, Arius, attracted many Christians with his heresy that denied the divinity of Christ. At the Nicene Council in 325 A.D., Christian leaders condemned Arius and his doctrine, but his influence was strong and this disagreement among Church leaders began a period of upheaval in the Church, generating many and varied sects, which divided the fabric of Christianity. One hundred years later, the Council of Chalcedon was called to deny the Monophysite heresy. The followers of this heresy denied the two (human and divine) wills of Christ. During this Council, the Roman bishops vied for power with what would become the Orthodox Churches. In fact, this power struggle among the bishops planted the seeds for the Great Schism, which occurred 600 years later. The main contribution of this Council was to establish once and for all that Jesus is "perfect both in deity and in humanness one is also actually God and actually man." As history marched on, bishops excommunicated each other and groups of Christians waged war because of this heresy. Then, at the call of Pope Urban II, Christians took up their weapons to stop the attacks on Christian routes to the Holy Land. In his speech on November 27, 1095, Urban also rallied Christians to take back the Holy Land, which was then occupied by the Muslims. These Crusades, which were waged against the Muslims from , cost many lives and still have impact the relations between Muslims and Christians today. There was even time when there were two Popes (1378 to 1417), and another when the bishops could not agree on the selection of a Pope for years, and even a time twelve Popes were actually assassinated ( )! Some of these were murdered by other leaders of the Church and government. After the East and West churches finally separated in the Great Schism, another great division occurred during the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As a result, there are now over 30, 000 denominations of Christianity. Because the leaders of the French Revolution tried to make the Church an agency of the government, philosophies like Humanism, Relativism, Existentialism rose up in conflict to Catholicism so that the Church became irrelevant to many who still called themselves Catholics. World War I and World War II resulted in the Holocaust and the rise of Communism, both enemies of Christianity. We can see the influence of these isms in our world today. Our Church has had a tumultuous history. There have been very poor shepherds leading our Church since the Lord ascended to heaven and left the leadership of His Church in human hands. Tertullian, an early Christian apologist, wrote that the blood of the martyrs is indeed the seed of the Church. The saints and martyrs, who have gone before us, have given their lives to preserve the Way, the Truth and the Life of our Lord Jesus Christ, in our Church and in the world. Saints and martyrs like Pope Saint Martin, St. Maximus, Catherine of Siena, St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, Ignatius of Loyola, Maximillian Kolbe, Pope John Paul II have spent their lives to ensure that the Lord s promise that even the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church, was true in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. The shepherds who lead our Church and our world are human, and therefore subject to human failings. God s Word instructs us to pray for those whom God has put over us. We are instructed that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. God expects us to lift up our own holy hands in prayers for the leaders of our Church and our government that they will, through their just and right decisions, guide us ever closer to the fullness of faith, hope, and love which the Lord intends for His People, our Church. Jesus prayed that they may be one with Him and with His People. Let it be our daily prayer, too! 2

Monthly Support Group for Caregivers of Loved Ones with Alzheimer s or Related Dementia offers a comfortable forum in which to share concerns, issues or questions with other caregivers. Facilitator is Joan Wright, a certified Dementia Practitioner with NVNA and Hospice. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm at the Sunrise Senior Living Center of Braintree, 618 Granite Street, Braintree. Weather permitting the Sunrise Senior Living will also be running a lemonade stand every Saturday through August from 2-3:30 pm. 100% of all donations benefit the Alzheimer s Association. Following the Rosary, members of the group share their thoughts as they explore topics provided by the Christian resource, Together Living With Cancer. Our collaborative support group provides cancer patients and their families, resources to cope with the emotional aspects of cancer by offering them a safe place to share their feelings and challenges. Next Sunday, July 29, the Knights of Columbus will lead us in a Rosary with the special intention to bring families together in prayer and to promote devotion to Mary in our homes and our parishes. We hope you and your family will join with the Knights before the 9:30 am at Sacred Heart Church in front of the statue of our Blessed Mother on the side of the Church. Thank you to our own K of C Council #1462 for their leadership in this parish prayer. This Tuesday, July 24, is the fourth Tuesday of the month which means our collaborative is preparing and serving dinner for the clients of Pine Street Inn. The menu never varies, but the number of persons needing dinner usually increases. Your donation of a Shepherd Pie or dessert helps us as a Christian community to serve the least among us just as Jesus taught us to do. Please bring your donation to collaborative offices before 2:30 pm or to the Saint Thomas More parking lot no later than 3:30 pm this Tuesday, or call Maureen for details about this vital ministry. Thank you. August, Maya & Alex collected cans for Team Heart during Vacation Bible School. They collected and donated $44.00! Thank you to our VBS kids and everyone who so generously supported TEAM HEART s mission to RWANDA last weekend! We were so happy to be able to collect over $3,000.00, and have that amount doubled by a generous parishioner. That means that the Sacred Heart and St. Thomas More Parish Collaborative has been able to send over $20, over the last 4 years to help provide sustainable cardiac care to Rwanda and East Africa. Team Heart s mission has three primary pillars: Prevention, Intervention and Education. Your help saves the lives of young people in need of critical cardiac care. Thank you for helping us to reach out to others in need.
