2 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. (1 Peter 4: 14-16) In today s Second Reading, St. Peter equates a meddler with a murderer, thief and other criminals! In what has been a recurrent theme in many of his homilies and speeches, our Holy Father, Pope Francis shares St. Peter s beliefs that gossip and meddling among Christians is deadly to our Church. As noted in an article written by Emily Harris, writing for the Catholic News Agency, offers a case in point: During a visit to a Roman parish Sunday, Pope Francis repeated his frequent condemnation of gossip, telling the congregation instead to always treat others with gentleness and respect, as the Holy Spirit does. The language of Christians who cherish the Holy Spirit, who was given to us as a gift, is special: they don t have to speak in Latin, no. It s another language: it s the language of gentleness and respect, the Pope said on May 21. Reflecting on these two points can help each of us to reflect on our own attitude as Christians, he said, asking is it an attitude of gentleness, or of wrath? Or bitterness? It s terrible to see people who say they are Christians, but who are full of bitterness, Francis said, adding that the language of the Holy Spirit is gentle...because he s gentle. And respect. Always respect others. He teaches to respect others. Pope Francis made his comments during an off-thecuff homily while celebrating Mass at Rome s St. Peter Damiani parish in the Casal Bernocchi neighborhood in the south of Rome. In his brief homily, the Pope noted that even though Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit as his advocate, which he promised to do in the day s Gospel reading from John, the devil knows how to weaken us. He will do everything, so that our language is not respectful or gentle, even within the Christian community, the Pope said. He lamented the fact that many people come to a parish in the hope of finding a meek and respectful community, and instead find one with internal bickering, gossip, chatter, competition. They find that air that s not of incense, but of gossip, and then what do they say? the Pope asked. (They say) if these are Christians, I prefer to stay a Pagan, and they go away disillusioned. With the language focused only on ambition and jealousy, we push people away and we don t allow the Spirit to work, Francis said, explaining that he returns to the topic of gossip so often because this is the sin that s the most common in our Christian communities. We must cherish the Holy Spirit and not speak like the devil teaches us, he said, adding that gossip hurts my heart, and is the sin that destroys our communities the most. Francis closed his homily pointing to Mary, telling parishioners, when they go to pray in front of her, to look down at the serpent she is standing on and pray not to be like that: not to leave one s tongue stuck out, but rather to cherish the Holy Spirit as she did. Let s not throw stones at each other. The devil has fun, this is a carnival for him, the Pope said. Instead, let us ask for this grace: to cherish the Holy Spirit that is within us, not sadden him, and that our attitude be one of gentleness and respect. Enough said! Family Faith Formation Survey: We have begun plans for next year s program, but before finalizing these plans, we hope to hear your thoughts on what would make our program better serve the needs of your family. Please complete the FFF Survey at our web site Bake Sale: Next weekend both parishes will host the bake sale to support our collaborative parochial school. All proceeds from the bake sales will go directly to benefit Sacred Heart School. Thank you for your support! Vocations: Sign-up for a visit with The Holy Family: Our collaborative is initiating a new program for praying for vocations in which we hope all our families will participate. If you would like to register for this family prayer, please call Maureen. Fr. Sean will send a Holy Family Statue and prayer card home with your family for the week. We will also include a visitation log book for you to write a prayer of fruitful thought and bring the statue back to Mass with you the next weekend so that the next family may also receive and share in this new gift and time of prayer. We will pray for all of the vocations in the Church. Special Thank you to all those who set up, served and participated in Fr. Dave s going away gathering. 3 Spring Concert We are so proud of all the students who performed last week in the Spring concert. Sacred Heart Church was transformed into a concert hall as the children graced Grandparents, family, and friends with their special musical gifts at this annual school activity. Beautiful day for a 5K! Thank you to Carla and Ken Murphy, and to all the volunteers for making the 3 rd annual 5K Run / Walk a fantastic success! Youth Music Ministry News: Thr ough the gener osity of one of our par ish families, On Wed, May 31st the children who currently serve in our collaborative music ministries will be performing in a concert at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell as part of the American Young Voices tour. Under the direction of renowned conductor Francesco Nunez, they will perform pop hits and songs of peace and unity with other student singers from New England. They will be joined by Grammy winning musicians and singers including some finalists from the popular TV show, The Voice. It should prove to be a fun and enlightening experience for students and audience members alike. We are proud of our student performers. Thank you... Break a leg! On Monday, J une 19 fr om 6:30 to 8:00 We would welcome adults and teens who might be able to help us construct and paint the sets needed to create the castle/fortress/medieval environment for the transformation of our church hall and chapel into a fun place for interactive play and learning the Good News!
