2 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.' Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour." Today s Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, relates the first of three parables concerning the need to be prepared for the Second Coming of the Lord and the end of the world. On the remaining Sundays in November the other two parables that Jesus told concerning these topics in Matthew will be proclaimed. Jesus told these parables to His Apostles in order to instruct, caution, and comfort them as the time of His death drew near. These three parables present glimpses of how we, too, should prepare and be ready for the end of the world, that time when Lord will come again and judge the living and the dead, because we know neither the day nor the hour when this will occur. But, because of Jesus own Resurrection and Ascension, we know that we will rise on the last day to meet Him when He comes. In the first of these three parables, The Parable of the Ten Virgins, Jesus uses the customs of a Jewish marriage, with which His disciples would be most familiar, to illustrate this theme. As in many other Jewish ceremonies, like circumcision and Passover, at least ten witnesses had to be present for the nuptials. Hence, ten virgins are the subject of this parable. As was sometimes the custom in Jewish marriages, late in the night, the bridegroom and his friends would come to the bride s house. In her house, the bride and her attendants had been waiting, with great anticipation, for her groom s approach. When she received the news that her groom was coming, the bride, accompanied by her bridesmaids, would go out to meet him. With great formality, but also with great joy, the ten virgins would carry lamps to guide the groom and his friends back to the house for the ceremony. We know that Jesus is often represented in Scripture as a Bridegroom, and we, the Church, as His Bride. The covenant of marriage is one of mutual love and devotion, so, too, should our covenant relationship with our Lord be marked. But in today s Gospel, the ten virgins are the individual members of the Church, her attendants. Each one has a personal duty and responsibility to be watchful and ready for the coming of our Bridegroom, the Lord Jesus. Just as the whole Church, the Bride, awaits the coming of the Lord today, we as her attendants have the same anticipation and joy of His coming. But, as we reflect on this Gospel, we must each ask ourselves: Are we ready for the day that we will meet Jesus face-to-face? Or, will we be unprepared, like the foolish virgins in today s Gospel, having put off the good we can do today because of a critical or lazy spirit? Will we be relying on someone else, like the wise virgins, to do the work we ourselves should and could do in our world? When the Lord comes to judge us, will our lamps be lit with good deeds and service to Him? Will He recognize us as His Light in this world and welcome us into the next? Whenever the Lord begins a discourse with the words, Amen I say to you it means He is about to impart something very important. So, too, the message of today s Gospel is profound and one we must heed. Any day, our own end could come. Are we ready to face the Lord any day He calls us home? What would we do-or not do- differently today if we knew with a certainty that Jesus was coming to judge us right now? The Church provides each of us with many opportunities to do good. At Sunday Mass, we have the opportunity to worship and praise the Lord in His temple. Scripture tells us that this is his due. It is our duty and responsibility to worship in the temple, the church building as a community of believers, because it is here that we receive the Bread of Life, in His Word and His Sacrament, to nourish and sustain us to do all that we can to be ready for His Second Coming. The collections in our weekly offering help us to maintain His temple and to give alms for those in need, locally and globally. In the weekly bulletin, there are a number of ways by which we can choose to offer ourselves in service to others. But, today s parable reminds us that we cannot choose to put off our worship and service to God at any time, because we know not the day or the hour that He will come to each of us. FAITH FORMATION NEWS & NOTES 2 Lectors may visit the sacristy today to receive the Lector s Workbook for the new Church year which begins on Sunday, December 3. Coffee hours: Each week, the number of families who visit the church halls after the Family Masses seems to grow. If you and your family have not done so, we invite you to share faith and fellowship with other parish families after Mass. NOTE: The gift of hospitality is a hallmark of every Christian community and serving as the host family at these Masses is a great way to serve God s People. Please call Maureen if you wish to volunteer for this valuable service. Discipleship I & II meets this Tuesday at Sacred Heart lower church hall. Discipleship I meets from 6-7:15 pm and Discipleship II meets from 7:30-8:15 pm. Signature drive continues this weekend: Currently efforts to stop tax-funded abortions are underway by concerned citizens to place ballot questions before the voters of Massachusetts on November 6, 2018 and November 3, Those ballot questions, if approved by the voters, would have varying effects. Two would amend the Massachusetts Constitution, one would repeal an existing law while several others would enact new laws. Given the importance of these efforts, parishioners will be collecting signatures at the doors of our churches again this weekend. If you have any questions,,our volunteers would be happy to assist you or visit or
