2 Order of Worship Welcome and greetings Aaron Tolson, assistant pastor * Call to worship taken from I Chronicles 29 Leader: Praise be to you, O Lord, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. All: Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Leader: Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. All: Praise be to you, O Lord, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. * Hymn of praise Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, his praise should sing? Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King. Fatherlike he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, widely as his mercy goes. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, widely as his mercy goes. Angels help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace. text by Henry Lyte, 1834 * Prayer of adoration Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings

3 Offertory hymn How Deep the Father s Love for Us How deep the Father s love for us, how vast beyond all measure, that he should give his only Son to make a wretch his treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns his face away, as wounds which mar the chosen One bring many sons to glory. Behold the Man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders; ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished; his dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom; but I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection. Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart, his wounds have paid my ransom. text by Stuart Townend 1995 Kingsway s Thankyou Music, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic. # * Scripture reading from Mark 9:30-37 David Fowler (9:30) text printed in the bulletin Anne Donnovin (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Redefining Greatness Frank Hitchings, senior associate pastor Pastoral prayer Invitation to the Lord s Table Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church welcomes all baptized Christians to receive the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper who have previously been admitted to the table of the Lord by the elders of this or any Gospel-proclaiming church. Come with joy as you actively trust in Christ and willingly forsake sin, having sought reconciliation in all relationships. Hymn of confession To Thee I Come To thee I come a sinner poor and wait for mercy at thy door; indeed, I ve nowhere else to flee, O God be merciful to me. To thee I come a sinner weak and scarce know how to pray or speak; from fear and weakness set me free, O God be merciful to me! continued

4 To thee I come a sinner vile upon me, Lord, vouchsafe to smile; mercy through blood I make my plea, O God be merciful to me. To thee I come a sinner great and well thou knowest all my state; yet full forgiveness is with thee, O God be merciful to me! To thee I come a sinner lost nor have I aught wherein to trust but where thou art, Lord, I would be, O God be merciful to me. To glory bring me Lord at last and there when all my sins are passed; with all the saints I ll then agree, O God was merciful to me! O God was merciful to me! text by Samuel Medley, Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace based on I John 3 and Ephesians 2 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! For because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions. For it is by grace we have been saved, through faith and this not from ourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. Words of institution Prayer of consecration Distribution of the elements Songs for meditation Come All Ye Pining Lord, we adore thy boundless grace, the heights and depths unknown, of pardon, life, and joy, and peace, in thy beloved Son. Refrain: Come, all ye pining, hungry poor, the Savior s bounty taste; behold a never-failing store for every willing guest. O wondrous gifts of love divine, dear source of every good; Jesus, in thee what glories shine! How rich thy flowing blood! Refrain Here shall your numerous wants receive a free, a full supply; he has unmeasured bliss to give, and joys that never die. Refrain text by Anne Steele,

8 Mark 9: They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise. 32 But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it. 33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, What were you arguing about on the road? 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. 35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all. 36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.
