Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings David Caines, ruling elder * Call to worship based on Psalm 119 and Psalm 117 Leader: Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. All: Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Leader: Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him all you peoples. All: For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord! * Hymn of praise From All That Dwell below the Skies From all that dwell below the skies let the Creator s praise arise; let the Redeemer s name be sung through every land, by every tongue. In every land begin the song; to every land the strains belong. In cheerful sound all voices raise and fill the world with joyful praise. Eternal are your mercies, Lord; eternal truth attends your word. Your praise shall sound from shore to shore till suns shall rise and set no more. based on Psalm 117 * Prayer of adoration Affirmation of the sufficiency of scripture Leader: Everything necessary for God s glory and man s salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly stated in Scripture or may be deduced from Scripture by good and necessary inference. While not everything in Scripture is equally plain or equally clear to all, everything that is necessary to be known and believed for our salvation in Scripture can be understood by everyone.

All: We affirm that nothing is ever to be added to Scripture, neither anything that is claimed to be a new revelation of the Spirit, nor anything that comes from human traditions. We acknowledge that we need the inward illumination of the Holy Spirit in order to have a saving understanding of what is revealed in God s Word. Leader: We also acknowledge that we are to use the light of nature and Christian prudence, in accordance with the general rules of the Word, to help us order our worship of God, the government of the church and society, and all of our human activities. All: The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God and what duty God requires of man. based on The Westminster Confession of Faith, , The Westminster Shorter Catechism, #3 Call to confession taken from Isaiah 5 and Proverbs 28 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. Their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel. He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace Colossians 1:21-22 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation. * Hymn of assurance Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners Jesus, what a friend for sinners! Jesus, lover of my soul; friends may fail me, foes assail me, he, my Savior, makes me whole. Refrain: Hallelujah, what a Savior! Hallelujah, what a Friend! Saving, helping, keeping, loving, he is with me to the end. Jesus, what a strength in weakness! Let me hide myself in him; tempted, tried, and sometimes failing, he, my strength, my vict ry wins. Refrain Jesus, I do now receive him, more than all in him I find; he hath granted me forgiveness, I am his, and he is mine. Refrain text by J. Wilbur Chapman, 1910

Installation of Chad Middlebrooks as assistant pastor of adult discipleship Questions to Chad Middlebrooks 1. Are you now willing to serve this congregation as the assistant pastor of adult discipleship, agreeable to your declaration in accepting the call of the Session of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church? 2. Do you conscientiously believe and declare, as far as you know your own heart, that, in taking upon you this service, you are influenced by a sincere desire to promote the glory of God and the good of the Church? 3. Do you solemnly promise that, by the assistance of the grace of God, you will endeavor faithfully to discharge all the duties of an assistant pastor to this congregation and will be careful to conduct yourself in all respects in a manner becoming a minister of the Gospel of Christ? Questions to the congregation 1. Do you, the people of this congregation, profess your readiness to receive Chad Middlebrooks, whom the Session of this church has called as the assistant pastor of adult discipleship? 2. Do you promise to receive the word of truth from his mouth with meekness and love? 3. Do you promise to encourage him in his labors and to assist his endeavors for your instruction and spiritual edification? 4. Do you promise to furnish him with whatever you may see needful for the honor of the Christian faith and for his comfort among you? * Hymn of response O Church Arise O church, arise, and put your armor on, hear the call of Christ our captain; for now the weak can say that they are strong in the strength that God has given. With shield of faith and belt of truth, we ll stand against the devil s lies; an army bold, whose battle cry is love, reaching out to those in darkness. Our call to war, to love the captive soul, but to rage against the captor; and with the sword that makes the wounded whole, we will fight with faith and valor. When faced with trials on every side, we know the outcome is secure; and Christ will have the prize for which he died: an inheritance of nations. continued

* Benediction * Doxology * Postlude Come, see the cross, where love and mercy meet, as the Son of God is stricken; then see his foes lie crushed beneath his feet, for the Conqueror has risen! And as the stone is rolled away, and Christ emerges from the grave, this victory march continues till the day ev ry eye and heart shall see him. So Spirit come, put strength in ev ry stride, give grace for every hurdle, that we may run with faith to win the prize of a servant good and faithful. As saints of old still line the way, retelling triumphs of his grace, we hear their calls and hunger for the day when with Christ we stand in glory. text by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend 2005 Thankyou Music, LLC, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic. # Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Congregation standing as you are able Musicians for this week: Eric Beveridge piano Eleanor Caines vocalist Xaris Emmett violin David Henry guitar, vocalist Hannah Lutz viola Hope Plating vocalist Chapman Whitted guitar John Wingard vocalist The rosebud in the sanctuary today is for the birth of Douglas Richard Ehman IV, born to Joanna and Doug Ehman on January 4.

Psalm 1 1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. NATIONAL SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY TODAY WE RECOGNIZE National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday and call for prayer for the unborn, their precious mothers and fathers, and the families around them. Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church is a community which seeks to embrace God s timeless concern for the most marginalized persons in every age and culture. It is in privileged participation with Jesus followers who have acted throughout history that we speak for and stand with those who have little or no voice today. We stand with them by voicing their petitions before the throne of God. We also stand with them through partnering with city-wide ministries such as Choices Pregnancy Resource Center, Bethany Christian Services, and Lookout for Orphans. We maintain that there is grace and forgiveness in Jesus for those who have had abortions, and we long to love and serve those who have made this choice or have been impacted by it in any way. Let us unite in prayer together for all who have been affected by abortion, for the ministries that we support in our city, and for God s grace to help us be their humble friends and servants.
