November 25, 2018 Fellowship Hall Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.
Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings Len Teague, pastor of children and youth * Call to worship Psalm 95:1-7 Leader: Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. All: For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Leader: Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. All: For he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. * Hymn of praise Jesus Shall Reign Jesus shall reign where er the sun does his successive journeys run; his Kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more. Blessings abound where er he reigns; the pris ner leaps to lose his chains, the weary find eternal rest, and all the sons of want are blest. Let every creature rise and bring honor and glory to our King; angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud amen! text by Isaac Watts, 1719 * Prayer of adoration Affirmation of faith (11:00) The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Call to confession 1 John 1:8-9 and Luke 19:10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost. Hymn of confession (11:00) Jesus, I Come Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come; into thy freedom, gladness, and light, Jesus, I come to thee; out of my sickness, into thy health, out of my wanting and into thy wealth, out of my sin and into thyself, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come; into the glorious gain of thy cross, Jesus, I come to thee; out of earth s sorrows into thy balm, out of life s storms and into thy calm, out of distress into jubilant psalm, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come; into the joy and light of thy home, Jesus, I come to thee; out of the depths of ruin untold, into the peace of thy sheltering fold, ever thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to thee. text by William T. Sleeper, 1887 Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace based on 1 Peter 2 We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that we may declare the praises of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once we were not a people, but now we are the continued
people of God; once we had not received mercy, but now we have received mercy. Christ Jesus himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds we have been healed. For we were like sheep going astray, but now we have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls. * Hymn of assurance Beneath the Cross of Jesus Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty Rock within a weary land; (men: the shadow in a weary land) a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, (men: a home of rest, upon the way) from the burning of the noon-tide heat and the burden of the day. Upon that cross of Jesus my eyes at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me: (men: the very dying One for me) and from my smitten heart with tears two wonders I confess, (men: and from my heart I confess) the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness. I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place: I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; (men: I ask, no other than his face) content to let the world go by, to know no gain or loss, (men: content to know no gain or loss) my sinful self, my only shame; my glory all the cross, my sinful self, my only shame; my glory all the cross. text by Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1872 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou fount of life, thou light of men; from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to thee again. Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; thou savest those that on thee call; to them that seek thee thou art good, to them that find thee all in all. Our restless spirits yearn for thee where er our changeful lot is cast; glad when thy gracious smile we see, blessed when our faith can hold thee fast.
O Jesus ever with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright; chase the dark night of sin away, shed o er the world thy holy light. text by Bernard of Clairvaux, ca Commissioning (9:30) * Scripture reading from Mark 14:27-31 Miles Caines (9:30) text printed in the bulletin Scott Quatro (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Pastoral prayer The Faithful Shepherd of the Scattered Sheep Frank Hitchings, senior associate pastor * Hymn of response Before the Throne of God Above * Benediction Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea, a great High Priest whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, my name is written on his heart; I know that while in heav n he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart; no tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see him there, who made an end to all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God, the Just, is satisfied to look on him and pardon me; to look on him and pardon me. Behold him there the risen Lamb, my perfect spotless righteousness, the great unchangeable i am, the King of glory and of grace! One with himself I cannot die, my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Savior and my God; with Christ my Savior and my God. text by Charitie Lees Bancroft, 1863 continued
