December 2, 2018 Fellowship Hall Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. First Sunday in Advent

Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings Frank Hitchings, senior associate pastor * Call to worship based on Luke 1:32-33, 37 and 2:29-32 Leader: Lord God, nothing is impossible with you. You provided redemption for your people through the birth of Jesus Christ, of whom the angel Gabriel said, He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. All: We praise you sovereign Lord, for you are a God who keeps your promises. We have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. * Hymn of praise Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee. Israel s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art, dear Desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. Come to earth to taste our sadness, he whose glories knew no end; by his life he brings us gladness, our Redeemer, Shepherd, Friend. Leaving riches without number, born within a cattle stall; this the everlasting wonder, Christ was born the Lord of all. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne. text by Charles Wesley, 1744 * Prayer of adoration and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood, he will give to all the faithful his own self for heav nly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the pow rs of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At his feet the six-winged seraph; cherubim, with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Lord Most High! Liturgy of St. James, 5th century * Scripture reading from Luke 1:26-38 Eleanor Caines (9:30) text printed in the bulletin Jeanie Dassow (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Heaven s King Became Mary s Child Jared Huffman, pastor of adult discipleship Pastoral prayer Invitation to the Lord s Table Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church welcomes all baptized Christians who have previously been admitted to the Lord s Table, by the elders of this or any Gospel-proclaiming church, to receive the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper. Come with joy as you actively trust in Christ and willingly forsake sin, having sought reconciliation in all relationships. Hymn of confession Come, O Redeemer, Come Father enthroned on high, holy, holy; ancient, eternal Light, hear our prayer. continued

Refrain: Come, O Redeemer, come; grant us mercy. Come, O Redeemer, come; grant us peace. Lord, save us from the dark of our striving faithless, troubled hearts weighed down. Refrain Look now upon our need; Lord be with us. Heal us and make us free from our sin. Refrain text by Fernando Ortega 1996 Metro One, ARR, ICS, UBP, CCLI Lic.#1520 Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace 1 John 4:9-10, 15 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. Words of institution Communion affirmation Leader: God of all good, you have prepared for us a feast; and because we are unworthy in ourselves to sit down as guests, we wholly rest on the merits of Jesus and hide ourselves in his righteousness. All: In this supper we remember the agony of the cross and the cost of redemption. We rejoice in your eternal love, boundless grace, and infinite compassion. Leader: We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection, until you come again. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. based on The Valley of Vision prayer, The Lord s Supper pg. 195 Prayer of consecration Distribution of the elements Songs for meditation Thou Who Wast Rich beyond All Splendor Thou who wast rich beyond all splendor, all for love s sake becamest poor; thrones for a manger didst surrender, sapphire-paved courts for stable floor. Thou who wast rich beyond all splendor, all for love s sake becamest poor.

Thou who art God beyond all praising, all for love s sake becamest man; stooping so low, but sinners raising, heav nward by thine eternal plan. Thou who art God beyond all praising, all for love s sake becamest man. Thou who art love beyond all telling, Savior and King, we worship thee. Emmanuel, within us dwelling, make us what thou wouldst have us be. Thou who art love beyond all telling, Savior and King, we worship thee. text by Frank Houghton, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, O come, thou Lord of might, who to thy tribes, on Sinai s height, in ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan s tyranny; from depths of hell thy people save, and give them vict ry o er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou Dayspring from on high, and cheer us by thy drawing nigh; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death s dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. Latin, 12th century, translated by John Mason Neale, 1851 * Prayer of thanksgiving * Hymn of praise What Child Is This What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing: haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary. Why lies he in such mean estate, where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear, shall pierce him through; the cross be borne for me, for you: hail, hail the Word made flesh, the babe, the son of Mary. continued

* Benediction * Doxology * Postlude So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; come, peasant, king, to own him; the King of kings salvation brings, let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise the song on high, the virgin sings her lullaby: joy, joy for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary. traditional English carol, adapted by William C. Dix, ca Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. 8 Luke 1: In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end. 34 How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin? 35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God. 38 I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May it be to me as you have said. Then the angel left her. ADVENT 2018 SERMON SERIES LUKE 1-2: REJOICE, YOUR KING HAS COME! The long-expected King has come to the earth as a child.
