2 Order of Worship Prelude Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying, BWV 645 J. S. Bach Welcome and greetings Joe Novenson, pastor of senior adults * Call to worship based on Psalm 46 Leader: The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Leader: He says, Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. * Hymn of praise 92 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God * Prayer of adoration * Reformation affirmation Leader: Holy God, we praise you for the cry of the Reformation and affirm that you alone are worthy of all glory. Therefore, people of God, what is the chief end of mankind? Our chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. This is our all-consuming purpose. Our every activity is to be sanctified to the glory of God alone. (based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, question one) Leader: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. In him we have been chosen, in order that we might be for the praise of his glory. (based on Ephesians 1)

3 To him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and power forever and ever! For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. (Revelation 5:13 and Romans 11:36) Call to confession based on Isaiah 55 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him. Let him turn to our God, for he will freely pardon. Prayer of confession Leader: Waken our hearts, O Lord, our God; make us ever watchful to serve you and your purposes. Trouble us with the smallness of our vision and work. Trouble us with the greatness of your command to make disciples of all nations. Trouble us with your great love for sinners and our own slowness to make you our greatest love. Trouble us with the brevity of our lives, talents, and treasures not invested in eternity. Silent prayers of confession Leader: Comfort us by drawing us to yourself with the cords of your unfailing mercy. Comfort us, O Lord, with the assurance of our salvation and unending glory with you when we suffer and are afflicted. Rekindle in us a renewed desire for the coming of your glorious kingdom when all wrongs will be made right, when everything that is broken will be made whole, and when we will trade a cross for a crown. adapted from the prayers of Martin Luther Silent prayers of confession Hymn of confession 461, vv. 1-3 Not What My Hands Have Done Assurance of God s pardoning grace John 3:16-17 God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

4 * Hymn of assurance 461, vv. 4, 5 Not What My Hands Have Done Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Chancel Choir A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and pow r are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God s own choosing, dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth, his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. A mighty fortress is our God. A bulwark never failing is our God. text and music by Martin Luther, 1529; arr. Carl F. Mueller, 1939 * Doxology 731 * Prayer of dedication and thanksgiving * Scripture reading from Mark 13:24-27, Nathan Allison (9:30) p in pew Bible and text printed in the bulletin Laura Broussard (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon The Return of the King Brian Salter, lead pastor Pastoral prayer * Hymn of response When Jesus Comes in Glory When Jesus comes in glory, as Lord and King of kings, O what a wondrous story the blessed Bible brings; his face will shine like sunlight, his head be white as snow, his eyes like flaming firelight, his feet like brass aglow.

5 * Benediction And we who are believing, and his appearing love, shall know we are receiving his glory from above; his resurrection power will raise us to the place where we that wondrous hour shall see him face to face. O hasten thine appearing, thou bright and morning star! Lord, may we soon be hearing the trumpet sound afar; thy people are all yearning to be thy raptured bride, and at thine own returning be caught up to thy side. text by Samuel M. Miller, 1919; st.theodulph * Congregational response Threefold Amen * Postlude A Mighty Fortress Is Our God arr. Paul Manz * Congregation standing as you are able Musicians for this week: Micaiah Allison trumpet Micah Davis French horn Joy Gibbons director Joshua Knight organ Nate Oster timpani The rosebuds in the fellowship hall today are for the births of William Harrison Weeks, born to Lauren and Will Weeks on October 15, and Liza Grace Brooks, born to Meredith and Jay Brooks on October 22. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: HEDGEHOG GROVE Volunteers are needed for Hedgehog Grove on Friday, November 9 from 5:15-9:00 p.m. Hedgehog Grove is a ministry that provides an evening of fun and care for children with special needs and their siblings. 6 Mark 13:24-27, But in those days, following that distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 26 At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. 32 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch! WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS AFTER A SEARCH PROCESS TO REPLACE JARED HUFFMAN and a recommendation from the pastoral search committee, the Session has called Chad Middlebrooks, associate pastor at Zion Presbyterian Church in Columbia, Tennessee, to join LMPC as pastor of adult discipleship.
