1 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth July 8, 2018 Dear Parishioners: Well, I survived my second Fourth of July Parade in Elkhart Lake last Sunday, July 1st. (I know, I know: it s really the Elkhart Lake Fireman s Parade that traditionally take place the Sunday before the Fourth of July.) St. Thomas Aquinas had a float again this year a pretty nice one, at that! and I was sweet-talked into walking alongside it by the Christian Women of STA. I was in pretty good company: Barbara and Johana Gomez (accompanied by Mom and Dad, Maria and Manuel), Joey Borth with Mom, Jennifer (Dad, Roger, drove the truck pulling our float), and Mary Jo Jetzer dispensed candy with me all along the route. So, it seemed, did every other vehicle and float in the parade. We were positioned a float or two behind the Kiel Municipal Band, which wasn t too far from the front in the marching order. And by the time we got moving, the street was already littered with more squashed tootsie roll miniatures than you could shake a stick at. I think kids make out like bandits in the Candy Parade (I m told by a local that this is the un-official nickname of the event) better than trickor-treating on Halloween! By the end of the parade route we d quite successfully run through STA s rather large consignment of candy. (Little-known fact: did you know that in a large bin of penny candy suckers tend to sink to the bottom? My last bucket of candy was almost exclusively lollipops!) But by that point, the crowd had pretty well petered out, too. So, all s well that ends well. It didn t rain on the parade this year. But it made no difference: I was soaked, anyway! I made my way back to the airconditioned rectory at STA and took a cool shower. I was still sweating for a half-hour after that! I think next year, I ll go incognito and sit at the Paddock Club or Off the Rail and quaff a cold one or two as the troupe passes by. But before that happens, we ve got something great in store for you right around the corner! On the weekend of July we are hosting the return visit of the Boos Family as our Mission Cooperation Plan speakers. As we announced earlier this year, STA and SJB are in what is called a twinning relationship with ZeruZeru, Inc., a relationship which invites us to build upon the foundation established last July, when Eric Boos made his MCP appeal to our two parishes. This year, Karene Boos, Eric s wife and partner in this venture, will bring us up-to-date on their labor of love with Sister Helena Ntambulwa in Tanzania in the work of ZeruZeru, Inc., for advancing the health and well-being of albino children. Having only recently returned from a nearly year-long stay on-site, the Boos Family has a lot which they are eager to share with us. In fact, there is so much to talk about that next month, on the weekend of August 11-12, Eric and Karene (and quite possibly Meredith and Zeke, the two of their four children who spent the year in-country with them) will present a much fuller report about ZeruZeru, Inc., the Mary Mother of God Center in Lamadi, Tanzania, and the state of conditions in Tanzania, in general. These repeat presentations, which are not fund-raisers but just information-sharing, will take place at STA after the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday and at SJB after the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday. Food will be involved (we re still working on what kind and how much); that, plus the likelihood that they will want to show film clips and slides, may dictate using the parish halls for these events. Stay tuned: more details to come. Father Phil EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Adoring and Honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ Every Monday from 4:00 pm 8:00 pm in Church Jesus said, Will you not spend one Hour with Me? Fr. 2 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Update from Hamjambo?! (How are you all?!) Over the past few months there have been many changes to the Center for children with Albinism in Tanzania, East Africa which is supported by ZeruZeru and generous donations from the STA and SJB parishes. Most importantly, 17 of the young children were baptized in May meaning all of the children of the Center have received this Sacrament. We purchased two large wood-fired cooking stoves for more efficient and reliable cooking, which is especially helpful during the rainy season. The Center has added some additional buildings including a dining room and an office. The Center has also started a garden to be self-sufficient in some varieties of mboga (vegetables) and now have a fenced in area for the kuku (chickens). In sports news-the Center was visited by the Tanzanian Albino United soccer team-which was of course very exciting for the children! It is always great for them to meet other people with albinism who have overcome the stigma and found success in life- this brings such hope and encouragement! Some of the basic costs per month: Basic Foods (grains, fish, fruits, vegetables)= $1000 Medical costs=$250 Education=$250 Staff Salaries=$560 We will be speaking to the STA and SJB parishes for Mission Appeal on July Look for our picture boards set up in the entry-ways. Asante Sana! (Thank you!) The First Reading from the prophet Ezekiel tells of how Ezekiel was called by God. The Lord speaks to him and says, Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you. God knew He was not giving Ezekiel an easy task, but that is part of what being called by the Lord sometimes involves. Being called is something to which we often make reference, as each of us is called in Baptism. St. Paul once wrote that we are called to belong to Jesus Christ. The United States Bishops issued a document a few years ago titled Disciples Called to Witness. That is what we are all to do as baptized Catholics. In that treatise the Bishops say, To create a culture of witness, we must live explicit lives of discipleship. Being a disciple is a challenge. Fortunately, one does not become a disciple of Christ on his or her own initiative. The work of the Holy Spirit within the Christian community forms the person as a disciple of Christ. God does not forsake us when we are called, just as He did not abandon Ezekiel. He is with us through the Holy Spirit to strengthen us and assist us. We must allow the Lord to help us. At the same time, we must strive to be disciples of the Lord. We are called to spread the light of the Gospel in everything we do. SJB ROAD AMERICA CONCESSIONS GET INVOLVED! MEET NEW PEOPLE! 4 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 St. John the Baptist Approved Budget Fiscal Year July 1, 2018 June 30, 2019 The following budget has been approved by the St. John the Baptist Finance and Parish Councils and Archbishop Listecki, as we are projecting a deficit of $200,545. Included in this budget is an anticipated one-time expenditure of $75,000 for two new boilers in the school. This expense will be met with funds drawn from the existing Buildings & Grounds restricted reserve fund. Were it not for the new boilers, our projected expenses for the new year would actually be $4,041 less than the figure we d budgeted for the current year. We have accomplished this savings despite increasing teachers salaries again in keeping with our commitment to achieve 80% parity with the Plymouth Public School District. We had raised the figure from about 60% to 71% in the fiscal year; for the new year, we have raised it to a 74% parity level. In the short term, our projected deficit will be absorbed by St. John the Baptist Parish s strong financial reserves. We recognize that the primary line item feeding into our projected deficit school salaries is only going to grow larger over the next two or three years as we stretch ourselves toward the 80% parity figure. Currently the parish subsidizes the school by approximately 40%. We know we cannot rely on parish reserves to bridge this gap indefinitely and that we have to find a way to increase considerably the flow of regular, dependable income. The Finance and Pastoral Councils, School Board and the administration are exploring options together to accomplish this goal, including: evaluating current fundraising efforts, writing grants, increasing school enrollment and sustaining the generous support of our parishioners. We are currently working on closing the books on the fiscal year and will report those results to you when complete. We have high expectations for our parish and our school. We have positive momentum and are moving steadily forward as we follow the example of our patron, St. John the Baptist, carrying out our mission of making disciples and bringing people, to know, love and serve Christ. CHECK OUT MASSTIMES.ORG It can be difficult for Catholics to find a Mass when traveling or when it is not practical to attend at their regular parishes. It is not always easy to find the right diocesan or parish websites. Mass Times makes it much easier to search for a Mass by presenting all the possibilities in a geographical area on one page. At you will find worship times, church locations, contact information, website links and maps. Parish Financial Stewardship In an effort to provide parishioners with a more clear and accurate picture of our parish s financial health, we are developing a new format for reporting this information. Look for the new format soon. We are grateful for ALL THE GIFTS you share!
