2 St. John the Baptist Plymouth June 18, 2017 WESTWARD HO Today Turk and I head west, seeking fame and fortune. Although I ll be back July 20 August 2 to fill in for Fr. Phil when he goes on vacation, I ll be spending the remainder of the summer as a helpout-priest at St. Margaret Mary Parish in Milwaukee. (92nd and Capitol Drive). This is a return-to-my-roots kind of thing, as I spent the first year of my priesthood at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish on 64th and Capitol. I m leaving you in the very capable hands of Fr. Phil, who is a great priest, pastor and friend. It s OK if you cough loudly when he preaches too long! (He will) You have been such a wonderful parish for me and I thank you again and again for your kindness to me and Turk. I tell everyone I meet, from the archbishop on down, that I wish I was younger so that I could be your pastor. I thank especially your wonderful staff: Lisa, Scott, Katie, Amy A and Erin for all your support and for putting up with my teasing. Thanks also to the sacristans for your great help. Thanks for your Appreciation Reception. And, because they don t read the bulletin, tell the teenagers that I love them and will miss them. Sign up for a shift at Wedding Banns I Greg Rusch and Kaylynn Humphry The Archdiocese of Milwaukee Missionary Cooperation Plan is a program which invites missionaries from around the world to speak at parishes in our archdiocese. Parishioners have the opportunity to learn firsthand about people, cultures and mission projects from all over the world. This year Eric and Karene Boos. (a local couple from Elkhart Lake), will present information about their work, and the mission to secure the human rights of the poor and vulnerable in Tanzania. The primary goal is to establish a sustainable, self-sufficient, safe-haven campus for children in Tanzania with albinism. This year we have 19 students and 4 chaperones that will be spending the week renewing homes by doing such things as painting, housecleaning, yard work, and minor home repairs. Some students may choose to help at day care centers for low income families by assisting with the children s programs, working at homeless shelters or helping at centers that distribute food to the needy. 3 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 18, 2017 Dear Parishioners: I know that over the past fourteen months, you ve been subjected to a number of liturgical styles, mostly and most recently that of Fr. John Schreiter. But you ve also had Fr. Tom Lijewski, Fr. Dennis Van Beek, Fr. Dan Lasecki, Fr. Dick Fleischman, and me. And it might be hard to keep the players straight without a scorecard. So, let me remind you of my style : my Sunday (Saturday) Mass usually runs about 55 minutes. I do like to greet people outside, weather permitting, on their way out of Church after Mass (5 minutes); then, going back to the sacristy and taking a few minutes to get undressed divested disrobed un-vested (after thirtyeight years I still have to watch my choice of words!), I am ready to move on to my next destination or activity. In the present constellation, after the 4:00 p.m. Mass at SJB on Saturday, it s on to STA for the 5:30 Mass; on Sunday, after the 8:00 a.m. Mass at STA it s on to SJB for the 9:30 Mass. Now, this is very possible, even with a 55-minute Mass, 5 minutes of greeting/visiting and the little time required to pack up and /move on. (It is amazing how quickly the parking lot and church vehicular traffic clears out after Saturday/Sunday Masses!). BUT (and here s part of the rub to which I alluded last week) doing a Baptism or Baptisms during Mass adds another ten minutes to the total time involved, turning what had been doable, if tight, schedule into a really stressed one. And even without Baptisms, the status quo leaves virtually no time to do any serious business (respond to an immediate pastoral situation, answer an urgent inquiry, obtain accurate contact information for a follow-up after the day s Masses, etc.) after the 4:00 p.m. Mass at SJB on Saturday or after the 8:00 a.m. Mass at STA on Sunday. SO, I m guessing you might be able to see where I m heading: we either look at pushing the Saturday Mass at STA back to 6:00 p.m. and the Sunday morning Mass at SJB to 10:00 a.m. or the 5:30 regulars at STA and the 9:30 crowd at SJB accept that Mass may not always start right on time. (This wouldn t be the worst prospect. We will know when baptisms are scheduled, so any delay could be filled with prelude music, a Stewardship film clip, pulpit announcements, a stand-up comic, etc. Pastoral exigencies may be a little more difficult to predict, but with the communication technology currently at our disposal, we can certainly get word to people when an unexpected delay is imminent.) IN ANY CASE, let s look at this as the Summer progresses and see how things go. Maybe we ll address it more formally once things have settled back into a more regular routine later in the year. Meanwhile, don t get too mushy in saying your goodbyes to Fr. John and Turk. They ll be back in a month. Fr. John has graciously agreed to return to SJB and STA for two weeks (July 20 through August 2) while I m off doing a family reunion thing in the Heart of Dixie. (Oh, you can bet you ll be hearing more about this, along with the loopy side of my family, in coming weeks!) Father Phil

4 St. John the Baptist Plymouth June 18, 2017 Stewardship & Evangelization the Chicken or the Egg? Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki Archbishop of Milwaukee At one time or another, you have probably heard the saying, which comes first the chicken or the egg? You may have even used this adage when you were discussing something and weren t sure where to begin or the process of how something got started. In church circles, there are some people who have the chicken and egg discussion regarding stewardship and evangelization. One school of thought tells us that stewardship leads to evangelization. Another way of thinking emphasizes that evangelization must come before stewardship. As I have said many times, my top priorities are Catholic Identity (who we are), Evangelization (what we do) and Stewardship (how we do it). So, while no one can definitively answer the question of which comes first the chicken or the egg I can tell you for sure that you need both! Perhaps we might be wise to consider stewardship and evangelism as two branches of our faith tree. Both flow from embracing our faith fully the gifts and the responsibilities and then acting accordingly. Both call us to share all we have: our time, our talents, our resources and our faith, as we do our part to live as God intended, and invite others to do the same. Stewardship and Evangelization one does not exist without the other. Those involved with stewardship understand that the most important goal of stewardship formation is deepening our relationship with Jesus so that we can live more faithfully as his disciples in the world. In other words, the ultimate goal of stewardship formation is evangelization. When our faith lives are alive and on fire, we cannot help but share our love of Jesus with others. We also understand that evangelization is central to the mission of all we do as Church. Through evangelization, we come to know, and to share, the Good News of Jesus Christ. Evangelization, simply stated, is encountering Jesus, embracing his call to discipleship, and sharing that call with others. Disciples who practice stewardship as a way of life recognize God as the source of all they have, are, and will be. Good stewards recognize the most precious gift given by our gracious and generous God is the gift of faith and they recognize that this gift must be shared with others in our faith community and the larger world. So, it s not as important which came first as it is that we are faithful disciples whose lives are rooted in Catholic Identify, Evangelization and Stewardship. What does this mean for me? Stewardship and evangelization call us to share all we have our time, our talents, our resources and our faith. When have I witnessed someone truly doing that? Archbishop Listecki states that the goal of stewardship is to deepen one s relationship with Jesus in an effort to live more faithfully as his disciples. What have I been doing or could I do to deepen my relationship with Jesus?

Fresh Meals on Wheels of Sheboygan County is in need of volunteers to deliver meals in Sheboygan, Plymouth, and Oostburg. Every day we depend on volunteers to deliver warm nutritious meals to those in need. Our volunteers do so much more than deliver a meal. For some of our clients, our volunteers may be the only social contact they receive during the day and they look forward to our daily visits. We also provide piece of mind for family members because they know that someone is checking on their loved ones during the day. Our volunteers are vital to helping Meals On Wheels live out our mission! We would be so grateful if you would consider donating one hour of your time on a monthly basis. Also, as a reminder, Meals on Wheels is available at a reduced cost of $6.15 to anyone in need of nutritious meals. In some instances, there may be assistance available to help pay for the meals. Some clients have been on the meals program for years and some come on as a temporary solution as they recuperate from an illness or surgery.
