1 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth October 1, 2017 Dear Parishioners: Well, we had our first 6:00 p.m. Sunday Mass at St. John the Baptist last weekend. It was mostly high school faith formation students and parents, with a handful of other parishioners. And it was good, if I do say so, myself! The student choral group led the singing, and they did a fantastic job! Thank you, Amanda Krueger, Mady Straub, Erica Birenbaum, Anna Brink, Sarah Birenbaum, Elizabeth Krueger, and Olivia Straub. And Denise Dimmer, the accompanist. (We need to work on attracting some bass and tenor voices into the mix!) We still have to tighten up the server schedule for this Mass no one showed. (It s amazing, how dependent one comes to be on servers to do all the little things that need to be done at various points in the Mass.) But it was good prayer. One of the measures of the goodness of prayer is its effectiveness. And I am absolutely convinced that there was a lot of good prayer going on, because when I left the rectory at St. Thomas Aquinas at 5:00 p.m. to get down to SJB, it was half-time; and from my vantage point, it looked like the Packers were in a world of hurt! They were down, 21 7, with too many of the anchors on offense and defense hobbled by injuries to allow for much hope that they could bounce back in the second half. Even the fans at Lambeau were uncharacteristically giving voice to their chagrin as the first half wound down. Once in Church, my attention was taken up by many little things, and I forgot about the disaster looming sixty miles to our north. As the flow of high schoolers and their families started to pick up as 6:00 p.m. drew nigh, I didn t hear any Packer chatter, so I didn t think of asking anyone for an up-date. Even if I had, it probably would have still been only late-third/early-fourth quarter news, which still wasn t all that encouraging. (Frankly, I m surprised that someone didn t have the game on in Church via i-pad or cell phone.... W ho am I kidding? I m sure it was on. People did an amazing job of controlling their reactions to the game s changing tide.) By the time I got over to my office after Mass, it was a few minutes past 7:00. I went to my computer and googled Packers-Bengals game and got the news that the Packers had won in overtime, 27-24! (Having watched the Bears beat the Steelers in overtime while waiting for the Packers game to come on, I was current on NFL overtime protocol, so I was sure I missed a hand-wringing, teeth-clenching, hair-pulling drama. Drat!!!) But how s that for a demonstration of the power of prayer? The Packers have only one more game with a scheduled 3:25 kick-off: next Sunday against the Cowboys. And wouldn t you know, next Sunday is when we have our next 6:00p.m. Mass! Hmmmm... maybe I can get Fr, V an Beek to... Just kidding! If the high schoolers can be here for Mass, so can I. (Besides, my doctor did tell me to watch my blood pressure, so maybe restricting my diet of Packer football could be good for my health!) So, Come, Kids! Go, Pack! 5 Fall Christian Education Workshop Wednesday, October 4, :00 8:00 p.m. At Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church 230 Butler St., Random Lake, WI Arno Michaelis and Pardeep Kaleka pardeepandarno - credit In the wake of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin shooting on August 5, 2012, Serve 2 Unite emerged in a spirit of defiance. The hate behind the murders was met with an ongoing practice of fearless creative compassion. Rooted in the principles of service to others, and relentless optimism in the face of adversity, Serve 2 Unite today engages young people and adults of all backgrounds to value humanity and the aspiration of living a genuine, honest life as a peacemaker. Serve2Unite keynote talks illustrate the concept of Chardi Kala the Sikh practice of fearless gratitude and relentless optimism in the face of adversity, with captivating storytelling and intense discussion. The experiences of a former violent extremist intertwined with those of a survivor of violent extremism reveal a very practical guide to cultivate a more peaceful life. About our presenters: Pardeep Kaleka s father, Satwant Singh Kaleka, was the pr esident of the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, and was one of the six Sikh members killed on Aug. 5, 2012 by a white supremacist member of the Hammerskin Nation. Kaleka is dedicated to overcoming trauma and hatred by serving others, even those with whom he disagrees. Arno Michaelis, was a for mer member of the Hammer skin Nation. Michaelis had left the organization in the mid-90s. He wanted to provide a better life for his daughter without the violence and hatred of his former life. He is the author of the book My Life A fter Hate, and strives to live a life of peace, forgiveness and tolerance. Together, Pardeep and Arno have given numerous talks throughout the Milwaukee area on such common spiritual themes of kindness, compassion, oneness, and forgiveness, along with the importance of service to others. This event is co-sponsored by the Random Lake Ecumenical Assn. and the Our Lady of the Lakes Parish Religious Ed. Program. In light of recent events in our country surrounding race and white supremacy, their message is sorely needed. Come and learn more about how each one of us can be an agent of change! All are welcome.
