2 St. John the Baptist Plymouth August 13, 2017 Dear Parishioners: Vacation s over. 3,100 miles on the odometer from start to finish, and none of those from driving around in circles! (I didn t really think I d driven that much; but one of my brothers told me that it was farther from Key West to Pensacola than it is from Pensacola to Milwaukee [in the category of absolutely useless information, I guess].) Driving wasn t too bad, except for the first day I refuse to take the Tri-state toll road around Chicago; instead, I take US 41 through the northern suburbs until it links up with I-94 and then take I-94 through downtown, past Comiskey Park and all the way into Indiana, where I pick up I-65 toward Indianapolis. It usually takes a couple of hours. But this time, it was raining heavily and there was a really bad accident at Dempster Road, so it was more like five hours. Spent thirteen hours on the road that day, making it almost to Knoxville. That made the morning Day #2 heavenly. (If you ve never driven through the Smokey Mountains at sunrise, you don t know what you re missing.) Made it to Wilmington by mid-afternoon on Day #2, and enjoyed a wonderful visit with Butch & Pat and their girls. Having spent twenty-six years in the Army and ten years with U.S. Sprint, Butch is fully retired now. He is quite active in retirement but makes no bones about his penchant for taking a power nap during the peak heat of the day each afternoon. He taught me how to appreciate that art, too. He also introduced me to a new beer: Fat Tire. After mooching off them for a few days, I moved next door to South Carolina to drop in on another classmate and his wife in Beaufort (that bee-oo as in beautiful, as opposed to North Carolina s Beaufort, which is bo as in bowling ), which is actually a group of coastal islands. I hadn t seen Mike & Ellen since the early 80s, so this was another very good, if long overdue, visit. Icing on the cake: Mike introduced me to yet another pretty good brew, Yuengling Ale (which, according to him, by law cannot be sold in the State of Wisconsin). Three days later it was time to mosey on to Destin, FL, for the family reunion. The planners had chosen a Hilton resort right on the ocean totally too pricey, for my tastes. But I wasn t paying the bill, so I kept my mouth shut. My brothers being fairly good connoisseurs of all things cooked and brewed just happened to be pretty well-stocked with both Fat Tire and Yuengling, so we spent a lot of hot&humid time sitting around the pool that went no deeper than three-and-a-half feet making non-wisconsin brewmeisters richer while my siblings grandchildren frolicked safely in the water. I got to Church on both Sundays (which probably doesn t surprise you). The Church in Destin was really beautiful; the one in Wilmington, terrible (long and box-like; couldn t see a thing).the attendance in each place was very good. (Actually, I d say it was surprisingly good, given the quality of the homilies I heard, but that d be uncharitable.) The drive home was fourteen hours the first day and five the second. Seemed to take forever to get from the coast of Florida into Alabama and then onto I-65. (My aim was to make it to Indianapolis by the end of the first day so that the second day wouldn t have me getting home too late. But once I made it that far, traffic and road construction made it impossible to get off until I was half-way to Chicago!) It was a good trip. (And, yes, I did listen to Sister Mary Clemente Davlin s CDs on The Divine Comedy. Several times over! Pretty good stuff.) But it s good to be back home with you. Summer usually means our selections of salad and desserts are usually less so please consider making something for our meal. Volunteers are also needed to assist with serving the meal and clean up. Future 2017 dates for SJB to sponsor will be October 31 and December 12. The Welcome Table provides food and fellowship every Tuesday evening at Redeemer Lutheran Church. This location is wheelchair accessible. This is a great opportunity to visit with others and let someone else do the cooking! The St. John the Baptist Classic Choir has been a tradition of this faith community for over 100 years, praising God through song. Please considering joining us. We look forward to having you. The choir leads the congregation in prayer through song and music. We sing at Mass two to three times a month We are always looking for new members, especially high school students.
