1 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth September 16, 2018 Dear Parishioners of St. John the Baptist: Well, I m a student again. Attending a course at the University of Dayton. And I m not in it alone: Mrs. Amy Nelson, Principal of our school, and Lisa Schoneman, SJB s Director of Administrative Services, are attending with me or I with them. Fortunately, we don t have to travel back-and-forth to Dayton; the course is on-line. Ten classes between now and December. Also, fortunately (or not), the University of Dayton is not known for being a party school, so it s pretty much a let s-getdown-to-business reality. Classes started on August 30th, and by the time you read this we will already have had our second class. There are homework assignments that have to be turned in, but they aren t too terribly difficult. I m not sure if we get graded or not, but if we complete the course we should be receiving certificates. The course is designated P1803: Understanding, Organizing, and Implementing a Vibrant Catholic School Development/Advancement System, Part I. (Whew!!! That s a mouthful! ) It really is pretty interesting; the first three classes are on the philosophy of development (as opposed to fundraising). The last seven will look at processes and structure to advance Catholic Schools. There is a Part II, which I suppose we ll be signing up for next year at this time IF Part I continues to be as interesting as it has been up to this point. We re thinking that if the three of us can be singing off of the same sheet of music, we may be able to create a synergy that will enable us to make sure that our school and our parish are always viewed as partners, not competitors, when it comes to parish priorities and resources. By the time of our yet-to-be-scheduled Town Hall meeting (sometime in late- October or early-november) we may have enough joint exposure to this new way of thinking that we ll be able to talk about it coherently with you. We will have a lot more to talk about with you at the Town Hall meeting, naturally: (1) the bottom line for the last fiscal year (ending last June 30th); (2) the budget for the new fiscal year (starting last July 1st); (3) the progress being made in the From Gratitude to Greatness campaign; (4) introduction of new staff members (and old staff members in new positions); (5) visions and revisions; (6) Church and School security up-grades; (7) the Echo Program; and much, much more. 2 The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) How Long Has It Been? Has it been a long time since you ve received the Sacrament of Reconciliation? You are not alone. This is a common story for many Catholics. It s time to examine why this is the case. Is it because of fear? Shame? Maybe due to uncertainty of how it works? Or guilt. Perhaps we don t think it s all that important. Anyway, if we don t go, no one is the wiser. Other Christian religions don t have reconciliation, why do we? Is it really all that important? We can pick our reasons. It may be one reason. It may be many reasons. Maybe we just don t know why. According to Canon Law, having reached the age of reason, every Catholic is obliged to confess serious sins at least once a year, but the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available to us all year. Private confessions are heard from 9:30am -10:00am on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month in the reconciliation room at St. John the Baptist. Private confessions will be heard at 9:30am on Saturday, September 22, 2018 Over the next several weeks, we will try to address some of these perspectives. Christ is looking out for us and that s why He gave us this Sacrament. The Church is our earthly shepherd and makes it available for us and for our benefit. This Sacrament can be received an endless number of times in our lifetime because it strengthens us, it pours graces on us and it draws us closer to God. It s That Time Again Christian Women s Craft Fair Saturday, November 3, 2018 This is Christian Women s biggest fund raiser and we always need your help and support! The silent auction is in need of big ticket donations such as tickets to Packer, Brewer or Bucks games, spa visits and vacation stays at area lakes or resorts. If you or your business have donations for the silent auction call Kathi Wagner, , to arrange for pickup or delivery of the items. Other donated items needed are children s toys & games and items for men. All donations should be new, good as new and never opened and within expiration date guidelines if cosmetic or food items. Please be specific about whether you intend the items to be used in raffle baskets or as silent auction items. Parish members can also create a basket to donate for the raffle or silent auction or volunteer to help put together baskets. For donations or to volunteer, or if you have items and questions about their suitability and to arrange for pickup or delivery of the items for the raffle baskets call Nancy Jusky, Please call Nancy or Kathi with your donations by October 24. September is St. Vincent de Paul Month On September 9, the Church celebrates the feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. As a college student, Frederic led a small group of his classmates into the poor areas of Paris to do what they could to address the needs for food and fuel. Working one-to-one with families, they gave witness to non-believers about the vitality of their faith. This model of assistance spread through Europe and arrived in our Archdiocese in Perhaps known for its quiet, behind-the-scenes work in most parishes, the St Vincent de Paul Society helps the people in our parish area with basic needs for food, clothing, shelter, and utilities. Our parish conference is part of an international Catholic organization bringing men and women together to grow spiritually by visiting anyone in need. 3 School News Faith Formation News From the Principal St. John the Baptist School is such a treasure to be part of! It is steeped in tradition and enriched with Catholic faith, discipleship and academic excellence. On September 4 th, teachers and staff waited by the entrance ways to welcome the students back to school with great anticipation of this school year. The teachers and staff look forward to continuing to follow St. John the Baptist School s mission of growing in knowledge of the Catholic faith, striving for personal and academic excellence and serving God and others. Thank you to all our families for blessing us with their children! Last weekend, the second annual Jaguar Jog was held. What a beautiful day it was for all involved! I am grateful for the support of our greater community, the participants and the amazing committee (Sherry Joseph, Beth Nothem, Suzette Schermacher, and Nicci Schneider) that organized this year s Jaguar Jog/Walk/Ride. The school is blessed to have so many generous and caring sponsors. This year s profits will benefit classroom teachers for teaching resources and supplies and will be put towards the refinishing of the gym floor. Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. Yours in Christ, Mrs. Amy Nelson Principal Safety Initiative Grant St. John the Baptist School is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a 2018 School Safety Initiative grant of $17,438 from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety. The improvements made to our school security and safety include: Additional audio / video door intercoms on secondary entrances. Exterior cameras and remote recording system Shatter resistance film on glass of exterior doors Additional components of the grant include staff training in civilian response to active shooter and Alert, Lockdown, Counter and Evacuate training. Catechetical Sunday This weekend we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. This is our opportunity to pray for, support and thank those Catechists who teach our faith and are echoing the Catholic faith to our children. All Catholics are called, by virtue of our baptism, to echo the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. Catechetical Sunday is a time for everyone to reflect on how we can share the faith. Adult Formation We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment through the RCIA Program. RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Through RCIA adults can become fully initiated into the Catholic Church by receiving Baptism, First Holy Communion and/or Confirmation. Social Justice Mark your Calendar! Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (Viewing of Opening and Session 1) Saturday, Nov 3 from 5-8 pm at SJB Church Hall For high-school and college aged young adults interested in connecting their faith to justice. The Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (IFTJ) is an annual gathering for members of the Ignatian family (Jesuit institutions and larger church) to come together in the context of social justice and solidarity to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate together. It is a place where people are empowered, re-energized, inspired, challenged, and supported by a community that sees faith and justice integrally linked. Now in its 20th year, the IFTJ has a rich history rooted in honoring the Jesuits and their companions who were martyred in El Salvador in The keynote speaker, who will be part of the viewing, is Bishop George Murry, S.J.
