2 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth October 15, 2017 Dear Parishioners: I am NOT going to make any comment about last Sunday s Packers-Cowboys game and our 6:00 p.m. Mass. I will NOT vent over the injustice of missing a second great come-from-behind thriller. I am NOT going to slam the official who gave the Cowboys their first TD on a platter by calling that egregiously bad penalty on Green Bay linebacker Blake Martinez. I simply want to THANK GOD for Davante Adams return to the active roster from his concussion protocol. This coming week is going to be special for me: it s my annual retreat. The priests of our Archdiocese are expected to make a retreat each year, and it s made relatively simple for us: a priest can make his own arrangements for a private or directed retreat at a place of his choice or he can attend one that is designed specifically for us Milwaukee priests at the Redemptorist Retreat House in Oconomowoc. Except for the years when I was away getting my degree in Canon Law and on one other occasion, I ve always opted for the easy way out: Oconomowoc. It s close. It offers good food. It s a pleasant location with lots of walking paths. The beds are comfortable. And the camaraderie with brother priests is always refreshing. I ll be there from Monday afternoon to mid-day Friday. I expect to get a lot of sleep over those four days even more if the priest directing our retreat is an ethermouth (that s what we called professors who just by opening their mouths could cast a pall of drowsiness over an entire classroom). I also hope to get a good amount of reading done. I will not be able to have an article in next week s bulletin since there is literally no time available for me to write one. My schedule for this weekend is crazy: a wedding on Saturday, followed by Mass at SJB and then driving out to Schoenstatt Center in Waukesha for a New Horizons retreat, where I ll offer Mass and hear confessions for the participants in that event for divorced and separated Catholics. (Fr. Van Beek will have the 5:30 Mass at STA.) After Sunday s Mass at SJB I have a baptism; then I ll be driving down to the 128th Air Refueling Wing at Mitchell Field in Milwaukee to offer Mass for the airmen on their drill weekend (their usual chaplain [one of our senior priests] is undergoing chemotherapy for esophageal cancer and will be out of action for two or three months); then I ll join my Jesus Caritas group for our usual monthly over-night meeting at Schoenstatt. The good news is that the Redemptorist Retreat House is only ten miles or so west of Schoenstatt, so I may get a jump start on the sleep thing if our Jesus Caritas meeting ends a little earlier than usual! I m already looking forward to my drive back home on Friday afternoon. The Redemptorist Retreat House is about a mile east of the intersection of I-94 and Highway 67, so I have that scenic drive through Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties to feed my sense of anticipation! But you know what else would help? If each of you would remember to keep me (and my fellow retreatants) in your prayers during the coming week. Meanwhile, I ll be praying for all of you, hoping that you will decide to attend the respective parish meetings the weekend after next Saturday, October 28th, in Church after Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas and Sunday, October 29th, in Church after Mass at St. John the Baptist. Each parish has a lot of important information share. So, see you in Church! Fr. Phil St. John the Baptist October 22, 2017 Following 9:30am Mass The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. ~from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults Congratulations to Patrick Larsen and Heather Berkovitz United in Marriage October 14, 2017 May they enjoy the Blessings of the Sacrament and continue in God s Love throughout their lives. Welcome to the Newest Members of our Catholic Faith Family Baptized, October 15, 2017 Cooper James Christensen and Colton Eric Christensen Children of Eric and Danielle Christensen
