2 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth September 24, 2017 Dear Parishioners of St. John the Baptist: Next Wednesday, September 27th, Pope Francis is launching Share the Journey, a global campaign to support those who have fled their homes seeking a decent and safe life for their families. This description is taken directly from the flier prepared by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), which in my humble opinion needs to find someone with a brain to proofread the wording of its pronouncements like this. It seems to me that with all the attention given to DACA ( Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals ) these days, the thinking of many readers of that line would zoom in on those people, with children, crossing our southern border illegally in search of a better life. And as we get caught up in the emotions and politics regarding how those children-becoming -adults should be handled, we lose sight of the fact that Share the Journey isn t only about people who voluntarily leave their homeland in search of something better, but also involuntary migrants, displaced persons, refugees: people who are desperate to escape persecution, violence, terrorism or the ravages of war or natural disasters, whose flight is nothing less than a leap for survival. Whether it s because of the company I keep or the things I read, I am particularly partial to the plight of these latter groups of people and those organizations dedicated to helping them. As God would have it, just this past weekend I heard from one of those organizations, Doctors Without Borders, about the collaborative work it is doing in Bangladesh with another such organization (USA for UNHCR [United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees]), for the Rohingya people. Never heard of them? Neither had I until last weekend. They are natives of the State of Rakhine in Myanmar {Burma], and over the past few weeks over 300,000 of them have tried to escape state-sponsored religious persecution (the Rohingya people are predominantly Muslim, while Myanmar is mostly Buddhist) and violence by fleeing across the border into Bangladesh. Bangladesh? Imagine that: trying to find a decent and safe life in Bangladesh! My compliments to you for your generous response to our second collection for the victims of Hurricane Harvey a couple of weeks ago. St. John the Baptist came up with $9,181.28! Well done! I am pretty sure that you will be invited to open your hearts and your wallets again as part of the Pope s Share the Journey campaign, but my guess is that, admirable as the work of Doctors Without Borders and USA for UNHCR truly is, they probably won t be listed among the organizations to which you will be encouraged to lend your support. But if you want to give to specifically Catholic agencies that devote themselves to helping migrants, displaced persons and refugees, two come immediately to mind: Catholic Charities for domestic services (people arriving or already situated in the United States) and Catholic Relief Services for those living under harrowing conditions in other lands. You can learn much more about these two fine groups at their websites. Thanks for your goodness. Father Phil Welcome to the Newest Member of our Catholic Faith Family Baptized, September 24, 2017 Jacob William Bub Son of Robert and Rebecca Bub May Jacob, and his family, enjoy the blessings of the sacrament and continue in God s love throughout their lives. 3 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time Plymouth Pray a September 24, 2017 Pray a Rosary for Life in Church Rosary for LIFE Saturday, October 7 at 3:30pm and Sunday, October 1 at 9:00am * Rosary guides are available at the main church entrance.* Sunday, October 1 at 9:00am and Saturday, October 7, at 3:30pm October is Respect Life Month, so the OCTOBER ROSARY FOR LIFE SPECIAL PRAYER INTENTION is for all of us here on earth to be treated with dignity and respect from conception until natural death. In October of 2016, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said, God loves us, treats us with respect, and asks us to do the same with others. Every person is sacred and must be treated with the dignity they deserve. No one should ever be treated callously or carelessly---everyone should be cherished and protected! From each tiny child waiting to be born, to individuals nearing death, all are precious and deserve our care and protection. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said, A basic moral test of society is how its most vulnerable members are faring. Yet, every day so many lives are being destroyed. Some people with terminal or chronic health issues are being encouraged to end their lives through assisted suicide or other euthanasia acts. Other lives are being treated disrespectfully, and in many cases also causing death. Examples of this are human trafficking, drug dealing, and the physical, mental, and emotional abuse associated with the mistreatment of children, spouses, the elderly, and the disabled. Please come and pray the Rosary for Life for all people on earth to be treated as children of God. If you are unable to come, please keep the most vulnerable in your prayers, especially during October, Respect Life Month. Did You Know? Anointing confers Strength, Peace and Courage Anointing of the Sick is not just for the dying. It is the sacrament that is received by those who are ill or suffering from physical, emotional or mental disorders at any age. By the sacred anointing and the prayer by the priest, the sick person receives the Holy Spirit s gifts of strength, faith, peace and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church. (Catechism of the Catholic Church no ). Family members of friends may join and prayerfully participate in the Sacrament. (Permission to copy granted by VITALity Catholic Health Services) Anointing Masses St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday, September 30 Following the 5:30pm Mass St. John the Baptist Sunday October 22 Following the 9:30am Mass Mass Intentions We will begin scheduling Mass Intentions for 2018 on Tues. Oct. 3rd ~ In order to accommodate our many parishioners, we request that you schedule no more than a total of five Mass intentions; two weekend/holy day/holiday Masses and three weekday Masses per year. Please schedule your Mass intentions through the Parish Office There is a customary $10 stipend per Mass intention. My passion for education and the success of students has been shaped over my years serving both as a teacher and now as principal. I seek to empower students to develop a passion for lifelong learning and nurture them by engaging their intellect, emotions and natural curiosity. I feel blessed to work with an outstanding group of educators. The teachers seek to provide an exceptional education for all of our students. They work hard to offer a wide variety of learning opportunities, including the integration of technology into their lessons. At St. John the Baptist School, the core of learning is our Catholic Faith. Our goal is to prepare our students to go out into the world and succeed, to be upstanding leaders and to commit to serving others. The teachers and I support our students in their efforts to develop lasting Christian attitudes and practices. It is our goal to make disciples of our students. This well-rounded approach to education helps our students to acquire strong organizational skills, critical thinking skills and to have confidence in their spirituality. I look forward to another amazing school year and appreciate the support from our parish and school families. Please do not hesitate to call the school office if you are interested in taking a tour of the school or learning more about what St. John the Baptist School has to offer. Autumn Blessings, Mrs. Amy Nelson Principal
