2 St. John the Baptist Plymouth July 2, 2017 Dear Parishioners: The move is done; the settling in continues. Newspapers (the Sheboygan Press and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) are delivered (usually early enough to meet the description of morning papers) daily; I ve mastered the combination to the P.O. Box in Elkhart Lake (they won t deliver to our door because we re so close to the post office); my offices are set up and computers operational in both parishes; I ve done several small loads of laundry and figured out the garbage/recyclable pick-up routine. I am having a little bit of a problem with my shower the sliding glass doors don t want to slide and, in fact, have come off the track. But Rome wasn t built in a day. Perhaps most importantly certainly to me, if not to the staff and general membership of either parish I ve figured out the temperamental stove tops at each location well enough to be able to brew a proper pot of egg coffee at both. (Now the trick will be to remember to turn the stove off when I m leaving one site for the other so that the pot doesn t go dry and get scorched.) I do want to thank Scott Dedlow for putting the Reserved for Pastor sign in the upper lot at SJB (along with all the parishioners and visitors who ve been honoring it!); it certainly makes the jog between parishes on Saturday and Sunday a bit more manageable. In my spare time, I ve managed to read a very enjoyable little thing entitled Tattos on the Heart by Gerald Boyle, a Jesuit priest about my age. The book was given to me as a birthday present by the sister of a St. Dominic parishioner; she said she couldn t put it down when she read it and hoped I d have the same reaction. I did. It s Boyle s story about his decades of ministry to gangs and their families in Los Angeles and about Homeboy Industries (the line of businesses that he helped to create to give gang members jobs and the means to support themselves in legitimate ways). At times gut-splitting, at times tear-jerking, the book is great. I can t help but marvel over how what he s been doing in the barrios of L.A. is such an absolutely perfect application of the mindset Pope Francis expresses so consistently in his writings (not to mention his example). Maybe it s a Jesuit thing. Naaaahhh, it s a disciple thing! If you re looking for a little inspirational summertime reading, pick it up. 3 The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 2, 2017 Welcome to our new St. John the Baptist Pastoral Council Members Bill Marklein Spouse: Stacy Marklein Owner: Employ Humanity LLC I have been a member of St. John the Baptist for four years and have been active with the Church Auction and Lenten Fish Fries. I joined parish council to add new energy and ideas that will connect and welcome our community to our church. I look forward to being surrounded by good people. I believe pastoral council members should listen and be a resource when needed to create a light that attracts all of humanity to our Church to know and follow Jesus. Cheryl Nicholson Spouse: Brad Nicholson Stay at home Parent to Children: Cassandra (18) Lauren (16) Alex (15) I have been a member of St. John the Baptist for the many years. I have been active as a Faith Formation Catechist and a Mission Trip Chaperone. Through parish council I hope to strengthen my own faith by becoming more involved in the SJB family. I would also like to give back to the community that has meant so much to our family. I feel that the role of a Pastoral Council Member is that of a liaison between the church and the faith community and merging them into one strong, faith based entity. Children: Isaac (9) Isla (6) I have been a member of St. John the Baptist for five years and have been active on our Prayer and Worship Committee. I also have served as a Lector and Lector Coordinator. I feel that I possess several God-given talents that can compliment the strengths of the existing Pastoral Council team. Furthermore, I feel that my business leadership experience and passion to build a successful team can also be applied at SJB. I hope to use my time on Pastoral Council to deepen my Catholic faith and absorb the wisdom of others in this vibrant parish. I believe the pastoral council provides a servant-leadership role to all members of the SJB congregation. In a world filled with constant change, distraction and temptation, the pastoral council also provides tangible avenues to ensure that the Catholic faith flourishes, grows and passes onto the next generation. Our parish family extends a heart felt THANK YOU to Kristin Strehlow, Mike Sokol and Kent Bindl our Retiring Pastoral Council Members Their commitment and dedication to our parish has helped to make our faith community and school vibrant. Pastoral Council at St. John the Baptist The SJB Pastoral Council is a consultative and planning body in regards to pastoral activity. It strives to fulfill the pastoral mission of the parish. It does this by developing Catholic identity, promoting evangelization, and fostering stewardship. The council engages in a continuous process of pastoral planning, taking into account the needs and priorities of its parishioners, the Archdiocese, the broader community, and the world. Social hour is at 6:00pm followed by Officers Installation, dinner (food will be provided, however a dessert will be appreciated), and a short meeting. Sign up is complete for the fifth annual Knights of Columbus Charity Golf Outing, supporting the MACC Fund. The MACC Fund, founded in 1976, is dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer and related blood disorders. St. John the Baptist Catholic School After School Childcare TEMPORARY PART TIME POSITION September November 2017 Our after-school childcare program is looking for an energetic, creative individual who enjoys engaging with children. This part -time position is temporary, at 5 days per week for approximately three months. Hours are typically 2:00 pm 6:00 pm.
