Esther Oh, soprano Soli Deo Gloria is a motto that has been used sce the time of the Protestant Reformation. It is the culmatg phrase of five Solas and means Glory to God Alone. Recognizg that all glory belongs to God and that we, even at our best, are but struments of His grace, is the true, Christian world-life view. Such was the perspective of the great church musician Johann Sebastian Bach ( ), who regularly began his compositional work, whether sacred or secular, by writg JJ (Jesu, juva Jesus, help me ) on the first page of a manuscript and sdg at the end. Sce 1995 we have employed this phrase as the title of our fifteen-mute musical prelude to eveng worship. SDG affords musicians (sgers and strumentalists alike) the opportunity to give back to God from the gifts He has given them. At the same time, the music is tended to encourage the congregation and to be a public testimony of our desire as musicians to honor Him with our musical offergs. This even extends past vocal music with sacred text to the untexted beauty of strumental music, which can also be offered to the glory of God. Through the doctre of common grace, such music demonstrates for us not only the skill of the player, but also the creative genius with which God has endowed so many composers, whether or not they were conscious of this gift or were tentional their use of it for His glory.

8 TENTH PRESS SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 Pray to the Lord of the Harvest By Russ Pfeifer, Global Outreach Commission chairman In Matthew 9 Jesus exhorts the disciples to pray that the Lord would send out laborers to the harvest. This year, not only has our Tenth family contued to support our existg missionary partners around the world, we ve also sent out two new global partners from our midst, Jane to the Middle East and John and Lori Kempen to Ethiopia. That is a rich blessg deed. For one, it speaks to our prayer efforts. Andrew Murray, Intercessory Prayer, says Strange, is it not, that he should ask his disciples to pray for this? And could he not pray himself? And would not one prayer of his avail more than a thousand of theirs? Murray later notes that such questions lead us up to the deepest mysteries of prayer and its power the Kgdom of God. So what is this petitionary prayer? David Wells Prayer: Rebellg Agast the Status Quo says lt is, essence, rebellion rebellion agast the world its fallenness, the absolute and undyg refusal to accept as normal what is pervasively abnormal. It is, this its negative aspect, the refusal of every agenda, every scheme, every terpretation that is at odds with the norm as origally established by God. Lookg around at the world can be unsettlg. I thk Wells is right when later he says that often we accept life as it is. It s just easier to call a truce. After all, what can we really do about AIDS, ISIS, Ebola, the refugees, and all the rest? Or closer to home, how can we make an impact on our children, untangle the mess of public schools, or combat the culture of pornography? It s too big for us to deal with. Will my prayg really make a difference? We have a very powerful enemy workg very subtly agast us. Over time, s wants to wear us down. S isn t idle. It actively tells us that our God is too small, that we need a break today, and that prayer well maybe there s somethg to it for some simple thgs, but really? Prayer? Hey, listen, don t worry about anythg. It s not really that bad. I m pretty comfortable. And besides, I m late for work. I gotta go. I ll pray later if I have time. S wants to lull us to a false state of acceptance. But the truth is that through God s very Word, we know better. The truth is that our path is shg ever brighter (Proverbs 4), that with our God we can scale a wall (Psalm 18), that we are more than conquerors (Romans 8), and that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5). S does everythg it can to suppress the truth that we pray to a God who can do immeasurably more than all that we ask or even image. S wants us to forget the privileges we have as heirs. God hates s. And s hates God. It hates him. And it hates us, his children. Yes, the world can be unsettlg, and it should be to those who have no hope. But for his children, strangers and aliens this world, we look with compassion on the sheep without a shepherd, whether our own backyard, or across the globe. Yes, we see that Satan rages agast the church, that wickedness creases, and that the battle is hard-fought. And yet God raises up our missionaries to go out to the worst of it. Our global partners not only need to be raised up by our prayer, but they need to be supported by our prayer as well. Like us, they need their graces to be fresh and vigorous, their mds stayed on him, and their supply to be unchoked, open and free flowg. In speakg of prayg for missions, E. M. Bounds The Essentials of Prayer, says that the key of all missionary success is prayer. That key is the hands of the home churches The home church on her knees, fastg and prayg, is the great base of spiritual supplies, the sews of war, and the pledge of victory this dire and fal conflict.
