The foundation will come from the sale of assets from Fidelis Care (a Catholic-sponsored non-profit health insurer) to Centene Corporation. So far, the transaction has been approved by the New York Department of Health and the New York Department of Financial Services. The last step on the way to approval is the office of the New York Attorney General.Letters of support to the Attorney General's office are needed so the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation can get started providing up to $150 million annually in grants to serve New Yorkers in need. To make it easy to show your support, the Catholic Action Network has provided a fully editable, pre-written message at the link here: The deadline to submit a letter is May 23 rd. - 2-

3 Pastor s Pen Christ leads us to go out from ourselves more and more, to give ourselves and to serve others. Pope Francis Dear Friends: During the special Easter season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never contributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2018 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 programs and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabilities and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you! If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 contribution this year think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others! Make checks payable to: Catholic Ministries Appeal Parish Pledge:$ Name Down payment: $ Address City, State, Zip: Phone: To make a donation, you can also visit CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org Or call us at ext. 296 Thank You! Cosenza Sunday Scripture Reflection May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday Today we celebrate the birthday of the Church! Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today s Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. Peace be with you. The apostles rejoiced when they saw the Lord. When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus breathed on them and said to them Receive the Holy Spirit. This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you ll read: The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God s first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant. In the pairing of these two readings the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John s Gospel we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you? -6-

8 Youth Ministry NEW THE BIG NEWS The Youth Group and Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang have adopted 2 missions in Columbia, South America. After years of supporting these 2 special missions, both financially and materially, we have taken their needs into our own hands. The first mission involves the Nativity R.C. Church in a poor, abandoned and neglected area of Cali, Columbia. There, Fr. Saul Londono, Pastor oversees his parish and all its ministries and outreach programs. The most important of these are a school and a soup kitchen that serves over 100 very impoverished students. These children need school supplies, clothing, vitamins, toiletries, first aid items, nutrition bars, sports equipment, board games like chess & checkers, cards and card games. The soup kitchen, which serves over 100 people a day, needs rice, oats, beans, grains and cooking and eating utensils. 12 Family Mass Ministry Happy Birthday Church! Today is the day that we celebrate the birthday of the church. The day that the church really got its start. We call it the day of Pentecost and it is when we remember the day that God sent the Holy Spirit to his people just as Jesus had promised that he would. The Bible tells us that on the day of Pentecost, the followers of Jesus were all together in one place when suddenly they heard a sound from heaven like a mighty rushing wind and it filled the whole house the followers became new human beings and a community of people with enthusiasm, energy and direction for the mission Jesus gave them. This great outpouring of the Holy Spirit was not a one-off event, it is something that continues in the Church right up to the present day. He inspires and sustains the Church through all the ages. Belonging to a local church is important, as ever, be part of this community of faith. It is here, where you profess your faith. THANK YOU ALL!!! Having a regular familiar local place to worship and pray and replenish is very essential. In this holy place you connect with God and others.
